I think there is a general argument to be made about story-based JRPG's here.
They are directed to an audience of children but really their themes and content are quite heavy, gruesome even. That you go around killing hundreds of sentient beings is often just taken for granted, but what is more taxing is the way emotionally developed characters are killed off for the sake of drama. The threat posed by the evil to be defeated is more often than not quite existential and great care is taken to present it as such, the later stages of the plot involving some kind of abomination overtaking the entire world as they know it, turning familiar things into abberations. Think about all the dire misery represented in Chrono Trigger and all the freakish mutants you are supposed to fight. It's all a bit much for the age group that the game would attract at a first glance of the first stages of the game.

>My father used to play Resident Evil 2 once in a while and I would watch him play. I eventually finished it by myself and never found it scary at all.
>One day he came back home with a new game. The cover was so mysterious and foreign to me in a very appealing way. I was pretty much into horror by that point thanks to my father showing me all kinds of horror films and books so I was very excited to see what that was all about. I must have been 8 years old.
>Whenever my father would leave to attend a phonecall or take a shit or whatever he would ask me to keep playing while he was gone. I always froze, couldn't even touch the controller. I did love watching it, listening to the soundtrack, the story, the atmosphere together were a very oppressive experience and it kind of did away with Resi's campiness.
>I tried to beat it with my friends but even at daytime we were scared shitless. I was intrigued by the game learning about the influences behind it, the stories about the development, I read walkthroughs, characters bios, enemy databases and knew it inside and out without even finishing it.
>I eventually decided I was going to be brave and finish it in one sitting in the dark. My TV had a headphone jack so it allowed sneak gaming at night.
>I made it through the game with all the endings by using separate savefiles and having memorized the guides and shit.

Breath of fire IV has so many depressing moments, but for some reason the one that got me good was the first time i went fishing.

You are on the run, trying to find Elina, with people dying left and right. And then you find one of these spots...
It's the music that makes you think you don't need to keep going; you can stay there without a worry.

Honestly, all Dragon Quest stuff can get dark as Hell, which is really dissonant with how silly Toriyama's art looks. Mhmm. I've heard people try to make a case for Marcello as well, but honestly, getting kicked out of a nobleman's house for being a bastard and then living in a monastery absolutely does not justify being that big of a dickhead to everyone.

Another wonderfully depressing game is Breath of Fire IV. There are things like an entire village of gifted children being slaughtered like lambs, using a god's first true love's soul to make a black magic nuke and drop it right on his head, which fails to kill him anyway, or turning a princess who only wants to take advantage of the armistice to try and stop the war entirely by being kind into an immortal blob of flesh, eyeballs, and other writhing bodyparts, just to basically make infinite ammo for the black magic cannon, since the more they're loved, the more damage their soul will do to those who love the sacrifice, and just about everybody in the whole damn world liked Elina.

Man, and we thought Professor Hojo was fucked up in the head. Lord Yuna may have been made as a parallel for him, but he went and shot right past him on the "Must Die in a Manner Most Painful and Messy" list. The ending says that the fucker plans to do it all over again.

God, Chrono Trigger. The future in that game was so fucking bleak that, when I first got it (I wasn't quite double-digits), I almost couldn't beat the Factory because of how bad it made me feel to see so many people who were basically just waiting for the end to come back in Trann Dome and Arris Dome. Balthasar pseudo-dying like he did in the Keeper's Dome made me feel like shit after I flipped the switch on the robo-Nu for him, and Geno Dome was absolute horror as I heard the screeches from when people were being put into a meatgrinder.

That whole era was just twenty kinds of fucked up. Still, it's one of my favorite parts of the game now, even if it's so sad, because the Son of the Sun fight is a really fun one, getting Rick Roll'd by Robo is hilarious, and Johnny is the shit. Even with as dark as the background looks when you're racing him, there's something about the little bits of sunlight that you can see cutting through the clouds that makes me feel like I may decide the situation is beyond crappy and nothing short of impossible, but I just have to try anyway.

After someone else posted the quotes, when listened to, it's clear that's what it's saying. Took me 8+ years of owning the game to figure out what the hell it was saying.

This game on the whole is pretty sad, as soon as you bother looking deeper into it. The blatantly fucked up stuff though, I just... ugh. Rasso is second only to Yuna for the Biggest Douchebag in the Universe Award. Yohm did some pretty fucked up shit, but it's obvious that the whole thing was leaving a bitter taste in his mouth, and apart from kidnapping Fou-lu's girlfriend, he was otherwise very respectful, or at least as respectful as someone who's trying to kill a god can be. It's pretty obvious he knew that this whole fiasco was likely to end in disaster, and when he went and immolated himself in front of Fou-lu, I actually felt pretty damned terrible about it.

Just started playing this game, it's not sad? it's kind of ridiculous why did the Princess do a 180 on her opinion of Angrim?

Why the fuck did Angrim stab himself?

It would be better if he negotiated the safety and care of his brother for enlistment into the Valkyrie's forces

Secret of Evermore was surprisingly depressing, or at least melancholic in a lot of places (I blame Jeremy Soule for that, "Cecil's Town/Dark Castle Town" is my absolute favorite from that game, and it sounds like an autumn sunset). A lot of it you ahve to think about a little bit, but then there are places with just the darkest damn atmosphere for a game with a cast of quirky smartasses everywhere.

>you find out that fucking HUMANS created Mother Brain for the purpose of subduing Parms, Dezos, and Motas, giving them all that they could ever want or need in an attempt to make them docile and easy to conquer
>your party starts to fight the humans just as the game ends
>the incident is never, ever mentioned again

The Humans were all killed. The natural disasters and monster outbreaks that happened in IV were a direct result of Mother Brain being destroyed, without it nothing can keep Mota from turning back into a harsh desert.

>Parms can't live o desert Mota
>they begin looking for other planets to colonize
>they find Ragol

and that's why there's no Motavians or Dezorians in PSO, the desert suited the former just fine and the ice cold temps suited the latter so they saw no reason to leave

>it's kind of ridiculous why did the Princess do a 180 on her opinion of Angrim?
Because she realized Arngrim isn't just a mindless idiot like she thought and is actually a very nice guy deep down.
>Why the fuck did Angrim stab himself?
Because he would have been executed anyway for killing the minister.
>It would be better if he negotiated the safety and care of his brother for enlistment into the Valkyrie's forces
His brother isn't and never will be an Einherjar, he can't negotiate anything, especially with Lenneth.

It's not hard to figure out. All the original developers got old and/or moved on with their lives. The current Square may as well be a different company from the old one.

Seeing what happened to all the people you met on your journey after/during the credits is really bittersweet and depressed the hell out of me. Seeing them go on with their lives was beautiful, and it broke my heart to see the game end.

>Legend of Mana

Are you sure ? I've been playing for 2-3 hours and I'm either stupid or there's no plot whatsoever, I feel like I'm just aimlessly pressing forward to the next area. Where exactly is it depressing ? On the verge of dropping it tbh.

Definitely. The other significant part to consider is when you realize that folks like Elizabeth, Camellia, and Horace are coming back to a world that has aged thirty years without them. The professor himself is going to have a lot of catching up to do, considering that scientific advancements had come a long way between the 60's and the 90's.

I especially feel bad for Elizabeth, considering that she's going to have to deal with going to school with an adult mindset. Shit was already bad enough as a kid, being put in an environment like that with the disillusionment of adulthood would be terrible.

>2-3 Hours and no plot.
It's like you haven't paid attention what so ever.
>>2412991
I feel like this would actually be really exciting for the professor, being able to see how far science had advanced. It won't be so bad for Elizabeth, she's at the perfect age to really enjoy the 90s, but I guess effectively being an adult, could change her experience.

>> No.2414549

>>2413902
For the professor, yeah. It's still bound to be a nasty cultural shock for everyone else, or at least it will at first. Horace would have to deal with the huge amount of history that's been proven inaccurate at the time (which is a pretty huge load to bear, I've met historians whose greatest fear is being proven wrong, and then having to unlearn so much because of it), and Camellia would likely have nothing left, and it's pretty obvious that she's a material woman.

I can see Elizabeth having an easier time than the others, I suppose, because as a child you're still pretty adaptable, but she's also got the mindset (or at least mental experience) of a forty year-old woman. On the upside of things, that's just about perfect for her to become an author. Write a bunch of stories about her experiences in Prehistoria, and sell them as pulp fiction novels. Writing them at such a young age would likely garner her a lot of popularity as some kind of genius prodigy.
