What the fuck is this board's issue with PSO? All I get is negative reviews..

>> No.2386883

I don't remember it being talked about around here, but it really wasn't amazing. Just endless raids through the same levels for incredibly rare drops. It's not awful, but far from great.

Good times with friends though at least.

Turning Sega's best RPG series into a console mini-mmo instead of making a real follow up to PSIV rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. That PSO was a symbol for how the series would be handled from that point on was just salt in the wound. Plus it kind of blew.

What about that was a meme? Is it a meme now when you explain why a group of people reacts a certain way? Or did you mean my use of 'salt in the would'? I am honestly at a loss here.

> Comparing PSO to MMOs
You're fucking idiots. It's a 4-player Co-op crawler. If you're going to compare it to other games at least compare it to the same type of game
> Gauntlet
> Diablo
> Baldur's Gate
> Monster Hunter
> Dragon's Dogma
It's not supposed to be World of fucking Warcraft

pretty much this.

I was warned before I got into PSO that its a lot like Diablo.

That's how it was marketed to us back then. As something akin to an MMO, but with fewer players that you could play on console. It wasn't it's own genre yet in this space.

At any rate, what you want to call it is completely beside the point. It wasn't the game that many, many Phantasy Star fans wanted, it wasn't great and it became the direction the series continued in. That's why it has negative reviews.

I even like (even love maybe) the genre that it started. Monster Hunter at this point is one of my favorite series of all time. But PSO never really became great.

I have not seen a single negative review, and there are several active topics about it in the dreamcast thread

It's pretty repetitive, like most RPG's out there.

Had a nice aesthetic and music though.

PSO is one of the most popular games ever made through the history of /v/.

It's just that now that we've been divided into /vr/, you have the /vr/ side upset that it wasn't a follow up to the turn based Phantasy Star RPGs, and the /v/ side full of edgy teens claiming that it was never good to begin with.

I love this franchise but the fanbase is seriously the worst I've ever seen. Yes, even worse than Sonic.

This is lost on many people today but back before Free 2 Play became widespread there was actually a distinction between an "MMO" and just a regular online game or rpg.

MMO stands for "Massively Multiplayer Online." The "Massively" directly refers to a large, non-instanced world shared by hundreds of players at once. Games like PSO and Diablo are all instanced, except maybe in lobbies or chat areas.

Today I think MMO is used to refer to more games that aren't really MMO's than its used to refer to games that are, but back when PSO game out you'd never hear the term MMO applied to a game with instanced combat areas

you have obviously not fully experienced the FFVII fanbase yet then.. At least Phantasy Star fans don't feel the need to shove the games down your throat even if you expressly display a dislike of JRPGs

We PSO threads often enough and I've never seen much PSO hate before.

PSU is another story, and every complaint you'll ever hear about that game is perfectly valid.

I feel like one of the only people who doesn't totally hate PSO2. It's definitely not as good, but most of my complaints are minor. The only major problem in my book is that missions are very short affairs instead of longer, dungeon crawling simulations. I still think PSO2 maintains the basic spirit of PSO.

PSO is probably my favorite game of all time, but I still think some of the fans are wearing nostalgia goggles too tight.

there is a gacha scratch system where you can scratch for a random item from usually a list of 100 items, for 200 or 500 yen a spin.
the list changes every 2 weeks with new(!) stuff for your little princess to wear and play dress up.

these usually consist of accessories, hair styles and costumes for your character.

90% of the playerbase is female character.

racial stats are now defunkt.

Pretty much my only complaint. The Challenge Quest fixes it, but it's just the one quest. Need more of those!

Here's hoping for a Ragol CQ for the anniversary. What we'll really get is just costumes and an EM with one classic boss.

Do you? You don't need to explicitly say MMO to advertise it as one. The game is clearly implying that it has a shitload of players compared to most online games with the multiple language bit.
