Why the fuck is Earthbound so expensive?

>> No.2386475

>>2386463
Because of its cult following. As far as I heard, it's not as rare as some people may think. I liked that game personally, but I'm not going to pay however much people on the Web want for it.

>> No.2386482

>>2386463
It has a fairly sizable cult following and it's always been hard to find, even when it came out.

Because people are willing to buy it at that price.

Idk about rarity. My only point of reference is a shop where the manager said he had seen 3 copies of that game come through in as many years. But hell if people are paying that much for them I guess they'd rather hold onto it than sell it to some retro-game store.

If people want to hold onto their copies then resellers will want to raise their prices to make more off a product they wont get easily. Which makes people who buy it from resellers want to hold onto their copy. Same thing happens with import games since people who went through the trouble of having something shipped in aren't likely going to sell it anytime soon.

Blame the cult, blame the buyers, blame the sellers, blame the manufactures, blame the developers.

>> No.2386491

>>2386484
There are still far fewer copies than most snes games. The internet has made it so that any game that had a retail release isn't truly "rare" as long as you're willing to pay reseller prices.

>> No.2386502

Wannabe retro nerd hipsters are willing to pay that much of their parents money to get it, so why not charge that much?

>> No.2386650

Because there is more demand than copies of the game. And the price comes from the impact that the cult following caused on the early 2000.

I dunno, maybe I missed them but it seems to me that it's been weeks/months since the last thread about Earthbound and its price.

People just think it's rare because of the box.

Seeing how it's the greatest game ever made it's pretty rare, who'd let go of a gem like that, so that's probably why.
I've never been able to play it because of this so I guess I'll always be a pretty low tier /vr/ denizen.

vomited, oh for fuck sake, let's look at this like adults. Earthbound sealed is less expensive that a loose copy or should be, game isn't even that great. Mother 1 and 3 are spectacularly better, the price of it is unjustified; unlike games such as Snatcher, where they are actually rare and the price is justified.

>> No.2392579

It's nowhere near "rare," but it is rather uncommon and people tend to hoard copies, creating some artificial scarcity to go along with high demand.

I bought it when it came out. Everyone thought I was a fag because it was all bad sprite graphics and not 3D or a fighting game or anything. Back then, buying an RPG that looked like it was for little kids or something was about the lamest thing you could do. But me and my nerdy friend Dan at the time, we both saw a preview for it in some game magazine and we thought it looked pretty awesome. I hated the scratch and smell cards it came with though, they all smelled like shit.

>> No.2394181

It's not even rare - it's just hoarded by resellers to drive up value.

earthbound is, simple put, a meme game. And on top of that, it's for the SNES, which is a meme console where even the most common games are price-gouged because it happens to be the favorite console of all the "retro gaming youtuber" shitheads.

>> No.2394421

>>2394416
People are willing to pay market value. The market sets the price. Resellers sell for what people buy it for. If it genuinely was not selling for $300, the price would eventually lower over time. However, it continues to sell at high prices so it won't. This is simple economics.
