I can't decide between Super Metroid and Quake being the best video game of all time.

Super Metroid is an incredibly smooth and simple game that hits high notes on atmosphere and gameplay. It's a concise package with all sorts of details to aid the player during gameplay without actually directly telling the player anything explicitly. Only once from start to finish is control ever taken away from the player, yet the world itself is expressive and alive.

Quake is a great game on its own, offering the same degree of atmosphere that SM has and is only broken up by map transitions. It's also simple to play, yet has enough depth to still be recognized as one of the strongest FPS games in the industry. And like the rest of the idTech family, Quake brought modding to the world as we know it today, allowing everyone big and small to create what they see fit.

I guess one's the best eastern game and one the best western game, and when you look at each, they do similar things but you can see the cultural difference in working between them.

I know it's a cliche to claim this now, but it's universal appeal really proves it. Tetris has such a broad appeal to so many kinds of gamers and also triumphs over the gender divide. If any single game had to be picked for the subjective title of "best" this would be the closest overall fit.

Tetris is a game that can be learned and once you get to a certain skill level its not fun anymore. I like playing Columns because you can't exactly predict how everything will stack and clear down. In Columns, even if you are consciously setting up matches its really hard to defrag the entire board. In Tetris you only must solve the top layer.

It's overated guys, seriously. You played it in a time of your life it "marked" you in a way, but it's not "all that".

I can relate to this 'cos something similar happened to me with a PC game of the 90s. After growing up (in every sense of the word, not just age) I understood that it's just a psychological effect and that yeah, the game I thought was the "best evah" was good but, not "all that".

I played FF VIII some years ago just to check it out after all the hype, thought it was extremely overated by it's fanbase, the story was the thing that got me through it till the end, never picked it up again; in fact, despite all it's problems FF VIII, I find better.

Most of the games I played during that time of my life have aged woefully. I played FFVII and really liked it. No it's not the best game ever, or even the best JRPG ever, but it's nowhere near as bad as the haters say it is. It's a shame the rabid fanbase can easily ruin someone's outlook of the game.

I thought VIII was crap, honestly, the second worst FF.

>>2385012
You've played lots of them? Honestly I've only given 3 of them more than 10 hours each: VII, VIII and IX. I've played a bit of VI. I was more into PC games than consoles in that time.

VII as I said, I got through it because of the story. Never picked it up again.

VIII I played once, and I thought there's some really cool shit going on underneath a mess, so I've given it other tries. That thought has made me invest more time in that one than all the others I've played combined (excluding Tactics).

IX, I seriosuly can't remember what made me drop the game half way through it. I'll probably give it another chance one day.

Those 3 I can compare, I can't put VI with them in my opinion, becuase it has a different pace and I feel it's from a different age, besides, I haven't even gone through the whole game yet... and I seriously don't undertand the extreme hype VII gets. With that being said, I think Tactics is the best thing I've ever played with the name "Final Fantasy" on it.

Neither the story nor the gameplay was good. Battles were generally easy and one-dimensional, like nearly all FFs. The only challenging fights were those against the Weapons. The story was so-so. It's not even complicated at all. The amount of dialogue and narrative text in the game won't even fill up a children's novel. It feels "deep" only to people who haven't been exposed to media with similar themes.

>> No.2385439

Absolutely. I played 2 long before I played 1 because as a kid, Star Ocean wouldn't emulate very well. There's only minor connections, mainly that one of the characters from 1 is Claude's father, but it tells you this right in the starting video.

VII isn't even my favourite FF title, it sits third in my lit, but I see it as objectively the best FF game, and quite possibly the best game around. Nothing else has the same charm, replayability and (for the time) solid design.

At the beginning it was actually really cool; unique high school/mercenary/military setting, story is kind of interesting (even after the "bad guys want world domination" shit), characters took some time to get used to (except Rinoa who is awful from start to finish) but had distinct personalities, new innovative style of combat to accompany you exploring the new open world etc.

And then everything completely falls apart after the first disc and destroys any positive sentiment whatsoever. Restrictive, linear level design almost as bad as FFX, a plot that made less and less sense the more you went along, dialogue that was most likely written by somebody's 5 year old kid (what kind of witty comeback is "Y-your b-breath s-s-stinks!" this could be a mistranslation but still) none of the characters except Squall having any real development and Rinoa still being the useless damsel/moron needing to be rescued.

This right fucking here. You cannot ask for tighter platforming. Mario's moveset is fucking crazy, it puts all other SMB games to fucking shame. The puzzle elements are fun, challenging, and only very rarely frustrating. Aesthetically, it's absolutely fucking perfect, everything is dead-on for the Game Boy hardware, truly a magnum opus for the original DMG. There are so many stages and so many ways to approach obstacles that you can replay it for dozens of hours just trying to get through stages a little bit faster, with a little more panache. They squeezed a masterpiece into this tiny little cart.
