So it looks like Mario 64 romhacking has died. In its place, the new standard is to use Mario 64 DS. This is a good thing. Better graphics, better emulation. Mario 64 romhacks were a mess, and would never work on real hardware. Mario 64 DS romhacks though likely can.

What do you think of this new era of romhacking?

Looks promising

Maybe now we won't have to worry about hacks crapping out on flashcarts since everyone and their dog has one for the DS. Unlike N64 carts the DS ones are so dirt cheap there's no excuse for not owning one.

I would assume the community knowledge and tools around 64 hacking would be pretty significant by now; does the same exist for the (much newer) DS version?

Does it control as shittily as the actual game in an emulator. Both the faux analog shit and the dpad were terrible.

Not him, but as far as Mario 64 Romhacks go, it was unplayable due to the camera.

There was 0 thought put into how the camera would interact with the design of the levels, causing absolute confusion and frustration.

It works fine on very big, open levels, but it cannot be excused for a lot of the smaller levels. The camera is arguably one of the most important factors right after controls for a 3D game, and they fucked it up.

Skelux is remaking his hack in the 64DS engine, which will be considered the "final" release of that hack. Afterwards he's returning to the planned Star Road 2.

the only levels that were much harder were tick tock clock and the last bowser level unless you were bad at mario 64 in the first place

What tools are used for SM64/SM64DS romhacking? I wouldn't mind messing with the program a little bit.

Watch this and tell me how it makes you feel.

Here you see someone who can't play Mario 64 and therefore shouldn't be giving an opinion about Star Road.

Yeah, the camera in SR was pretty bad, but it didn't render the game "unplayable". Mario 64 had some issues with camera and they were doubled in SR, but if you knew what you're doing, you wouldn't have much of a hard time. Controlling the camera end up being part of the gameplay when it comes to Mario 64.

People are going to have to come to agreement to just drop the bottom screen, because it was just fucking awful trying to watch that.

I had always theorized that the N64 emulators of today would be in a state much like ZSNES, where you still need to have it around for SMW hacks due to something that only worked well with it.

I approve using the DS version. Not only is it better emulation but there's more you can do with it, thanks to new characters and the like.

You mean I can play as Luigi in my Mario 64 romhacks without it being a shitty texture hack or Mario stretched out to look like the green spaghetti he shits out every morning?

I've dreamed of this day.

Is this bait?

Mario64DS uses a fucking Dpad which therefore immediately makes it a worse option. Not to mention the physics.

I played the fuck out of the game of the 64, and even finished the DS version with a D-pad twice.

There's logic to the camera that follows you around the level, to some degree. There's none in star road.

Not sure what you're talking about. DeSmuME's upscaler seems to work fine. There's even a fork that lets you raise the internal resolution, although not at a playable speed on my machine.
