The N64 did not have many 2D games, but there's Mischief Makers.
Also one of the few games to use the Dpad, meaning you held the controller an both outer prongs.

I never truly realized how not so amazing the N64 was. DK64 seemed amazing to me because it was 3d. Kirby 64 is still amazing but now that you mention it, it is very slow but still really fun. Super Smash is a great game and it has a couple others but overall it was objectively not full of good games.

2D/3D mix game.

There is not a single fully scrolling 2D game on the console.

PlayStation curbstomped both of them in every region and almost every Greatest Hits game was 3D. Western gamers just didn't give a shit about 2D any more because 3D and FMVs were the big new things, and although Japan appreciated 2D more they still eagerly took to the new 3D games.

Actually the Saturn outsold the PlayStation for the first couple of years in Japan. The PS sold more overall but it was hardly a curbstomp.

The important part is both the PlayStation and Saturn are far, far, far, far, far superior to the N64.

PS: 19.36 million (JP)

Globally, it was over 100 million for Playstation and 8.8 million for Sega, which is kinda BTFO.

I think he's gunning only for games that only use 2D, no 3D objects at all.

Frankly I'm a little confused, as don't '2D' games for other platforms do the same thing pretty often in 5th gen? Symphony of the Night, for example, was still a 3D game, in the sense that they use quads and drew sprites on them.

>> No.2376930

He posted Japanese numbers. An almost 4:1 difference in sales is absolutely a curbstomp. PlayStation outsold the Saturn and N64 combined in Japan alone by an almost 2:1 margin.

I guess I'm more confused just at the purpose of the thread. If it's to find 2D games on the N64 then a few good ones have been mentioned, but I think we've also covered pretty thoroughly that Playstation and especially Saturn are the systems to look at for 5th gen stuff of the 2D variety.

Honestly, while this is a troll thread, the real reason N64 didn't get 2D games was economic. The N64 hardware advantage was in 3D, if you were making 2D games there was no reason to put up with Nintendo's bullshit in return for something.

We had a very nice conversation about the differences in hardware architectures of the 5th gen. We concluded (well, actually a guy who knew his shit said) that the Nintendo 64 was easily the most powerful console of its generation. What you call a mess may be some stuff that made it harder to get optimal performance from it. We were told those mainly were a very high latency RAM and textures having to mandatorily go through a texture cache. Also, even though Nintendo offered a standard one that almost everyone used, you could tweak the microcode of the GPU to define its way of working. The other "messy" stuff would probably be the cartridges.

>the playstation is the true successor to the SNES
And pretty much something you'd have expected from SEGA (instead of the Saturn). It's funny how the Dreamcast feels like the successor to the Playstation (in hardware) and the Playstation 2 is more like the Nintendo 64 (they went from simple to quite complex and unique).

Btw, in that thread I was shown this pic.

Nice pic. Two things I'd add though:
* Saturn: triangles weren't exactly an industry standard at this point (there was none), though they were a bit more frequent. They became a de-facto standard during this console's lifetime (eg, Nvidia had to release a compatibility layer for the NV1).
* N64 can't do RGB, which completely spoiled the picture. If you were not living in Americana, the on-screen result was frankly off-putting compared to what people were used to.

S-video was pretty close, and most systems really didn't have RGB cables that were common. In most of Europe, I can't think a single system ever shipped with an RGB cable. Plenty were composite with a SCART adapter, and RF earlier.

Honestly, compared to the competition, the N64 looked fucking amazing at wide open visuals. The excessive filtering that looks so terrible in emulators is almost seamless on console, things next to you look as good as halfway across a map.
