NBA Jam thread.

Also welcome are College Slam, NBA Hang Time, and NFL Blitz.

To start, did anyone ever play the version with Barkley in it?

Unfortunately no, think it has something to do with the specific board that the game ran on

I'm not sure how uncommon this opinion is, but Showtime is definitely my favorite game in the series.

I just think it does a great job of capturing the gameplay of the 2D Midway basketball games, while adding enough to where it doesn't just feel like Hangtime in 3D

Also I just love the roster of that game (Rockets with Barkley/Pippen/Olajuwon, Raptors with VC15/T-Mac, Lakers with Shaq/Kobe, etc)

>> No.2368834

>>2368773
also a great title, the 2D precursor to Midway's other hockey releases (Gretzky, Hitz)

I actually think it may be the best hockey game of the era, even better than something like NHL 94 (atleast vs the CPU)

What's the best home version? I have the Genesis version already, but I heard the 32x version is better. The Jaguar port is supposedly good too.

>> No.2370070

>>2370006
As far as the home ports, the Saturn or PS1 release is the way to go. Those versions of the game are the closest to the arcade, sound/graphics/gameplay wise.

Maybe a lot of people have now forgotten he's a crossdressing, bitey buttrapist. I haven't.

>> No.2370195 [DELETED]

>>2370172
I don't know, have never found the playing scaling on the Saturn that egregious.

32x port doesn't compare to the Atari/Playstation/Saturn, too many shortcuts taken.

>> No.2370203

>>2370195
The 32x version is good enough. It plays well and has better graphics and sound than the Genesis and SNES ports.

The Saturn version isn't worth it though. It doesn't feel like the arcade game. Very poor port in my opinion.

>To start, did anyone ever play the version with Barkley in it?

Wait, are there really versions of the original game that don't have Sir Charles? I only have it on Genesis, so I don't know how other consoles fared.

>> No.2370215

>>2369613
In terms of gameplay, there's no real difference. They were made by the same devs (along with NBA Showtime and NFL Blitz), but they had to change the name because I guess Acclaim or whoever owned the rights to "NBA Jam."

The 5th Gen console games called "NBA Jam" were made by a completely dev studio. That's why they're so different from the originals.

>> No.2370224

It seems like back in the day, there were so many sports games that even someone such as myself who doesn't even play sports games could find some that they enjoyed. Exclusive deals pretty much killed this genre.

NFL Blitz fan, by the way.

>> No.2370226

While fairly similar games, here are the main differences between Jam T.E and Hangtime
>All-new graphics engine running at 60 frames per second--way overkill but sure is purty
>Lean-in and fade-away jump shots
>The spin move (tab Turbo twice)
>Double dunks (some say triple dunks are possible, too) (yep, alley-oops were in Jam TE)
>Outdoor court
>Updated rosters and new secret characters

Hell yeah, I had this for my Pentium 1, WIN95 dos machine. Excellent arcade port, good sound. I had Saturn-esque controllers from Gravis that worked have the time.

I would try to get the CD otherwise the MIDI kinda sucks if you use DosBOX.

Well, now I gotta go diggin' around in my garage to find that game.

According to my GamePro strategy guide for NBA Jam, certain early production runs slipped out when Barkley was still under license.
