Since most of you must be getting into that age now, do any of you have kids?

And do your kids appreciate your retro games?

I'm not yet a father but I am an uncle and the small kids seem to like the simplicity of the older Mario games.

>> No.2368309

Last Christmas, my niece bought herself a SNES with the money she was given in cards.

>> No.2368316

Given my age and lifelong lack of GF I will probably never have kids. And lack of siblings means no nieces or nephews. It would be fun to expose untainted kids to older games before they reach some sort of "Ewww why is it all ugly and old looking? Where's my iPad and PS4?" stage.

I don't have any kids, but I made sure that my little sister would appreciate games, and she still does, even now. She's not into a bunch of older games like I am, but she has a lot of fun with PS1 and PS2 stuff, even though she has newer consoles.

I'm only 18 and girls have never really talked to me before so no, I don't have kids.
I have a 7-year-old sister but she only plays games on her iPad. She tried playing Super Smash Bros with me once but she said it was "dumb."

>> No.2368353

I'm 21, and don't have any kids of my own, but I have a half sister and a half brother that are 1 and 2 years old respectively. I'm thinking when they're old enough that I don't have to worry about them drooling all over my controllers, I might show them some retro vidya.

21 here. I hope i never have kids, but if it happens i'll love the shit out of them.

I'd most likely introduce my kid to any games i played when i was a kid. My first was Quake. I'f he/she is too young to play themselves i would let them aim and shoot with the mouse, while i move with the keys. It actually used to work out pretty well. When i got good enough to play myself i would do this with my sister.
We were always kind of poor so i didnt get a PS1 until later, or had any other consoles.

But PC games are a little more beneficial in terms of education i think. I would have never picked up computers as well as i did if i had been playing console games. You learn a lot from adjusting graphics, asking questions about hardware, fixing broken games and even pirating games. Before i could read fluently i was finding serial codes for shareware games using an updated list that was released by a group every month. As i got a little older i played around with modifying variables in java games and changing textures around in more complex ones.

Chances of this happening with my kid are slim. Computers and games are a lot different now. They will probably be wanting to play the newest shit game after reading about it on their smart phone.

23 here. Family was poorfags, first console I owned was an N64 in 2001, primarily played N64, Gameboy, Genesis, SNES, PS1, and Atari 2600 growing up, in order of amount played. (and non-/vr/ things) In highschool days, learned about emulation and started playing a lot of older games as compared to current gen because poorfags. Yeah, well, based on your tone, it's sufficient enough to suppose that you're being a prick. Stop pretending that you belong to some sooper speshul sekrit club, you fucking ass hat.

Age has nothing to do with appreciating retro games, and even if it did, you would be neglecting the fact that kids who were born 20 years ago owned and played Super Nintendos, Mega Drives, and other retro consoles as their first. Level 36 wizard reporting in: I don't have kids, and don't plan on having kids. Ever.

However, most of my friends and co-workers do have kids. And I tell them all the same thing I will now tell you, if you would listen: Don't let your kids waste their time playing games. Make them go outside and play, sign them up for sports, music lessons, and take them to the library and instill in them a passion for reading and writing and language.

As much as I enjoy games, I understand that they are nothing but a diversion. Literally a waste of time. The older I get, the harder it is to justify playing anything at all. It basically just boils down to apathy and cowardice. I can't force myself to care enough to change.

>> No.2369090

So its okay for you to waste time with games but not others? What kind of logic is that. I dont get exactly what defines something as a waste of time. The only way a game can actually age is if it was revolved entirely around some stupid fad that was popular at the time. There is no way a game from the 1980s would magically turn to shit for someone who never played a video game before and happened to pick one from that era out as their first one despite it being 2015. People who claim a game "aged" poorly are just looking for an excuse to shit on an older game that is considered good without listing any actual reasons.

I don't think the 3rd gen aged poorly at all, but the early 3D systems had some truly atrocious games. You just try telling me Bubsy 3D wasn't developed by Satan himself. PS1 textures were epileptic, N64 had no VRAM, none of the controllers had dual analog sticks until it was too late so all the in-game cameras were borderline unplayable. The only games I still play from that era are either 2D, like SotN and Legend of Mana, or those with fixed planes/cameras, like G-Darius.

I play 8 and 16 bit games all the time, but otherwise sort of... skip a few generations ahead until things stop looking and handling like pond scum.

I agree.

If, for instance, a game relies entirely on OMG REAL PEOPLE graphics and the rest of the game is just mediocre, in 10 years time the OMG REAL PEOPLE graphics will no longer be impressive, so it has to stand entirely on gameplay and the graphics for what they actually are, not how people think of them at the time. Kinda like dating a hot person who is a total asshole - for a short period of time their hotness makes their shittiness more tolerable, but after a month most people will realize that they are nothing special and move on.

If that makes sense. If a game has balanced quality and isn't a one-trick pony that has clouded the judgment of the braindead public through its gimmick, it won't get worse over time, even as other good games are released.

I think of it more like: there's some games whose visuals or mechanics are just timeless
if you make thats only impressive because of the graphics or the technology its gonna be easily forgotten or just used as a reference for something or a benchmark tool (see Crysis)

This OMG REAL PEOPLE graphics thing and the never-ending quest for "realistic" graphics are pretty stupid sometimes. Just look at "realistic" FPS games. They have been repeating the same concepts or mechanics since the early 2000's, if not earlier. It bans you for being "abusive".
It's meant for trolling but if you get reported enough they just ban you. So stuff like exploits or what not will get you banned.
Me being a big fan of fully exploring a game can't play a game like that.

And the whole banning for trolling is retarded to begin with. People play the game how they want. What's next banning people for playing too well or bad? Oh wait CSGO does that already... Yep modern games just make me shake my head.
