/vp/ sucks so I'll ask here: how was Mystery Gift like in GSC? I never used it because I don't have a GBC, just a GB, so I don't know.

Bulbapedia has info but it may not be 100% accurate: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Mystery_Gift#Generation_II

I remember the novelty of doing it without having to have any physical connection of the GameBoys was way cooler than anything I ever got from it.

Probably because the thing didn't seem to be used for much at all. I don't remember using it for anything other than Pokemon and many games just have their own shit added on directly into the cart, like an IR sensor for Robopon. (Also features a battery to keep a clock running to alarm you about in game events.)
I'm sure other games used it, but there wasn't really justifiable reasons to keep it.

Yeah but RSE and FRLG not having cross-generational trading was more due to hardware and software limitations than anything. The time system and daytime cycles could've been readded properly, though (FRLG doesn't even have the time system like RGBY).

Mission Impossible had a fun IR feature. It could copy IR signals like one used in a typical remote control. You could basically use your GBC to control your TV if you wanted. The range of signal was pretty decent too.

Back in school we all used to mystery gift each other every lunchtime. I got a few plants, posters, carpets and even the Surfing Pikachu doll. Always wanted one of the non-Snorlax big dolls. One guy I know did get the big Lapras doll. Another fun thing was that you could fight the last person you mystery gifted with at the training hall in Viridian City.

With G/S/C you could only MG with up to five people a day. Then there was the TCG which had a shittier equivalent of MG called Card Pop. There was no refresh either, so you could only ever Card Pop with someone once.

>Card Pop

Fuck that shit, you had to use GameShark to ever hope of getting the Card Pop-only Mew and Venusaur cards. And of course there was a deck builder machine that had a deck for them, and of course it needed two of each.

I only ever card popped with two people, my brother and this random kid in a hotel that I met on vacation.

On that note though, I'd love for a new TCG game on the 3DS. They could just put Card Pop into Streetpass. Unfortunately they never will do this because they have the crappy freemium PC game.

Now that I think of it, are there any emulators that support mystery gift or the IR port at all?

I think there was talk of TGB dual supporting it six or seven years ago, but I definitely never got it to work.

I did it with friends, I think you could only do it once per day, and you'd mostly receive stuff to decor your own room in the game. I remember getting a N64 once.

Then my Gold cartidge's battery died (happened to almost everyone else at some point, I'm sure), so it's all gone.

Pocket Pikachu 2 can be very useful if you have Crystal. If you send 0 watts over MG you get Eon Mail, which can be traded for Revive as many times as you want, giving you unlimited funds.

Crystal but not Gold and Silver?

>> No.2372569

>>2372490
Crystal is a GBC exclusive, and therefore it could expect the infrared port needed for Pocket Pikachu 2. GS was also compatible with the Game Boy and Super Game Boy, except for their Korean release because the extra RAM was needed to process the way Hangul/Chosungul works (it's indeed an alphabet, but letters are organized into syllable blocks which used to be a bitch for computers to handle if I recall correctly.)

I can't believe none of you fools mentioned that the last person you do Mystery Gift with has their trainer and team loaded into the Battle Club (or something to that effect) where you face 'CAL' every day. My friends and I did that shit all the time as a loophole for us not having link cables. You could do it between GS and Crystal even with the female trainer, but she'd don the male sprite in GS.

Robopon's was the opposite - you'd use anything that sends IR signals (i.e. remote controls) and point it at the sensor and it'd unlock chests in game, up stats, etc.
Mission Impossible actually let you use the game/gameboy as a remote control by storing the data from the signal and being able to send it back out again.

just arrived today, got here a lot faster than I anticipated. It's in moonspeak so I don't understand the prompts, but it's great so far from what I can figure out. I can't find my Game Boy Color right now but when I do, I'll let you guys know what happens--I have GSC and I'll use it on each to see if there's any differences between the gifts they receive (I have my doubts).
going to use this as my new pedometer instead of my N3DS, also going to be able to use it while running which is a plus.
