This game was my first computer password when I was a kid. Quest64. Funny part? I was so young I didn't realize I didn't like it. Like, I look back on it and remember being confused running around not knowing what to do and never being able to beat what I thought was the first boss but could never be quite sure. But, yknow, childhood wonderment, I really did feel like I was on an epic journey...because I was stupid.
Not a commentary on the GAME being stupid, just saying kids are generally stupid.

My dad is a huge history nerd so he always buys games set in historical contexts. He bought so many WWII shooters that I just couldn't get through them all, but I don't think he cared that I didn't finish them. Once he and I decided to get this game (whose name I can't remember and also pretty sure isn't /vr/) where you timetravelled to different times in history in some conspiracy. It was abysmally bad, but we could tell from the cover that it would be shit.

He got us Superman 64, and the whole family had a great big laugh at how awful it was.

Finally, and this isn't even vidya but since we're talking about feeling bad about parents giving gifts... One year for christmas my mom had gotten me (along with games and other things) this flyer toy, it was like a glider that you throw and it glides in the air, like a better version of a paper airplane. The idea was cool in retrospect, I actually wish I still had it because it'd be fun just to fuck around with. But I was going through a phase where I didn't want to go outside to play (I was probably 12 and wanted to be cool and hang out at the mall or play vidya or other shit), so I never really played with it. But I felt really bad, I kept imagining that my mom saw it in the store and was like, "Oh this looks cool! I bet anon will love it and will have a lot of fun and be happy!" and when I didn't play with it I was torn up by guilt.

Anyway it got thrown away like three years later along with some of my shittier toys. I had only played with it like twice, and those times were fun but still it wasn't very much. I told my mom how guilty I felt and how I did appreciate it, and that I regretted having gone through such a faggy phase and wish I had played with it more. She said, "Oh I almost forgot about that thing. I just picked it as I was passing in the aisle as a stocking stuffer, it was kinda junky. Idgaf." My mom is cool.

I can agree that it isn't a great game, but it's not the atrocity, most of /vr/ makes it out to be. It's a fun, fast food RPG that you can turn your mind off and just play. My biggest criticism is that the towns lack activity. No sidequests, or any real reason to stop in them, other than to find a level up and some bread. As nice as the castles and towns look graphically, they just feel empty. Quest 64 needed a little more time in the oven, and it's flaws show that.
Also, the English ending is awful. Japan, however got a great ending. Quest 64 deserves the small cult following it has.

This game was bad to me, because there was no way to heal until you leveled up enough to get the -one- healing spell in, I think, the water element?

I never got that far though. Only recently did I even learn it had a healer spell. They needed some kind of shop for potions or something. Other than that the GFX were clean, imo. Colorful too. But that camera..that lil guy is quite short and you couldnt see past his head.

Your mom seems a pretty cool lady. And you feeling guilt, I think thats part of growing up. You humanize your parents in that way so that theyre no longer just rule-makers, but people with emotion and such.

It makes me sad that the Gameboy version of Quest isn't as remembered as the N64 game. I only played a little of the N64 game because I only rented it, but I owned the GC version and liked it quite a lot.

Admittedly it is a pretty sparse game, it's something you pretty much just play for the battle system, which is unusual for an RPG. It took me a long time to figure out you could mix different elements when casting a spell, and when I did it was like breaking through a wall. It was the first RPG where grinding battles so I could progress actually felt rewarding enough to be worth it. I never did finish the game, sadly, and I don't really have the time to invest into playing it again. I'll always have good memories of it though.

Oh, and the GB version has some stuff that was cut from the 64 game, so I consider it the superior version.

>> No.2371674

I hate Quest 64 purely because it is almost solely responsible for the "every single N64 game has repeated stretched blurry textures" meme.

You should have seen when I asked my Aunt for The End of All Things to Come by Mudvayne and they have another shittier album called The Beginning of All Things to End.
