...as opposed to grainy low color fmv. Far superior imo.

Only really found use on the systems too weak for fmv but which had enough storage space for all the huge animated art pieces

PC Engine CD had loads of these. So did some later DOS games like Dune II.

Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqwRU-fLPIA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bpdv6oBA7U0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t74o_XJ2Ds
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tC32ZIYXlE

I <3 16 bit CD based titles with no fmv in them. They fix the biggest problem with 16 bit machines (the music quality and low storage space for sprites/backgrounds) but lack the worst aspect of that era (shitty postage stamp fmv with the mspaint color palette)

Post your favorite pixel art animatics from any platform.

Guilty Gear had the most badass boss introduction of any game and was a pure slideshow display.

You mean animations. Animatics are rough draft sort of black and white low frame rate animations used for planning purposes before something is actually animated in its final form.

How is that autism? "Animatic" means something very specific and most people don't even know what they are unless they are interested in the animation process. This is honestly the only time I've ever seen someone misuse the term.

These are not fully animated. They are big static sprites being moved around, with occasional smaller animated pieces.

This closely resembles an animatic for a (never made) proper frame by frame animation. Hence why I think the word fits.

A lot of anime has very few frames per second but you don't call that an animatic. Animatics are really part of the storyboarding process, sometimes nothing more than rough pencil drawings from the storyboard itself scanned in. It's like calling any old drawing a blueprint because it's on blue paper.

We disagree on this, full stop. I have what I feel are good reasons for applying that term to these things. You disagree, but I don't care.

Lunar 2. So much cooler than the budget anime with a terrible art style that they put in the Playstation version.

I love these sort of animated cutscenes. Too bad they are pretty much only on the PC-Engine and Sega CD.

I consider this to be the most metal sequence in a game to date. It's Lords of Thunder cranked to 11.

Am I the only one who never liked FMVs? The transition to from game engine to FMV is jarring, and honestly they never looked all that good to begin with. I much prefer pixel art animations or using the game engine.

I am the OP, and said this in the OP. But yes, when an FMV starts I cringe and wait it out. When pixel art cutscenes start, my eyes are glued to the screen. Since it takes so much more effort to make, I know it's gonna be good.

On the one hand the animated cutscenes of the first Wing Commander probably hold up better.
But I'm a huge sucker for cheesy sci-fi B movies, so the FMVs of the later game are awesome to me.
I guess I like FMVs not because they're awesome, but because I like cheesy shit.

Wing Commander III through V wouldn't had been the same without the on-camera pairing of Luke Skywalker and Biff Tannen.
