I've seen threads dedicated to universally hated RPG party members, but who do you think are some of the most universally loved?

Every playthrough I try not to use Cid and give some of the other characters a chance, but as soon as his theme hits and he starts yelling at Shera to get the goddamn tea I can't help myself.

Sabin falls under that category for me. In all the parts where you have to pick specific dudes, there's no fucking way I'm benching the guy that can do multitarget attacks for free. Same with Edgar too. The Figaro Brothers are just way too good.

Figaro brothers are very good but once you start getting all the high tier magic relics (the 1mp cost, double cast, mimic), the casters take over. But yeah, they carried me through pretty much 75% of my game last run then it was terra, celes, the painter girl and probably gau.

Yang and Cid, and to a extent Palom and Porom in FF4, I just can't do the final party without Yang or Cid.

Barret drops his cool lines and stuff after Corel, so but I still like him, I always end up with Cid in the party though, and Cait Sith/Vincent/Yuffie as the last member.

I really like Amarant, Freya and Quina, good thing they are the strongest characters as well.

Won't go much further though since then we go into "not /vr/ territory"

But these are the games I usually end up replaying in the Final Fantasy titles

Here's my few cents from the gems I remember at the moment

Cyan. He kind of sucks compared to the others, but I loved his description of having the strength and courage of a hundred man. Plus, he's a really unorthodox character for a playable one in ajrpg in terms of design for Square games. Not to mention that his story was really sad.

Amarant. Guy had zero personality and story line but hell if I didn't like him. Steiner was probably the only guy I used more but that guy was hilarious.

Belenus. The second character you can recruit...or third, forgot. The noble. People usually send him up to Odin the first chance they get since he fills out all the requirements and his design is not really all that attractive for most people. I always kept him because he's strong as hell with awesome attacks and an incredibly powerful special attack.

Bowman. This guy is like the funniest, most laid back guy ever. Really. He's got this constantly stoned kind of face and you just know he's a guy to hang out with. Plus, he's no slouch in battle either.

Haschel. Cool old guy who kicks ass and takes names? Hell yes.

Citan Uzuki. Besides the fact he's probably the most powerful character in the game, his design was really cool, plus I played this game when Iaido style of fighting really appealed to the weaboo in me and I loved the way he handled a blade. Not that he needed it.

Rand. Really great stats, best support guy in the game, and really high defense. Plus, he was just some farmer dude that wanted to live a simple life.

Amarant is an odd bird in the party, that I'll say.

I think the intention was to give a representation of VII-VIII's style of protagonist. It makes the conversation between him and Zidane make sense anyway, there were a lot of odd self-aware moments in IX.

Absolutely wrong. More and more people are starting to prefer Bleu/Deis over her in 2, mechanically- and aesthetically-wise. Bonding to shamans aside, she's a much weaker Rinpoo. Her shaman form is one of the weakest, she doesn't even get enough agility to properly utilize her special ability where there is a huge demand for it. Her special ability can be got around very easily.

In 3, she's universally considered garbage, you have no merit.

Good in 4.
Good in 5 (ofc, the game is designed at the whole trio working together).

I hate to tell you this dude, but Kingdom Hearts exists.

We don't really want to utter it's name, but it happened and it made Vivi more in the limelight than generic Black Mage. And he was quite popular already before that, IX may have had it's problems but it nailed Vivi spot-on.
