Probably all the people dear to Alundra dying and him barely failing to save them several times. It has a more direct approach in terms of confronting yourself with the dark themes.

Zelda has that going for it too although the older titles pulled it off much better. Ganon corrupting the sacred land in ALTTP or even destroying your homeland in OoT with all the zombies at the market place or even the entirety of MM all did a marvelous job in that regard.

I enjoyed Alundra a lot though, it IS a copy of Zelda, sure, but if every copy would be as good as this I would love to have much more of them.

Digimon World 1? Holy moley that game was grueling.

You spend about an hour (real time) in the training camp just to get your digimon to a level where they can even kill ANYTHING. By that time they're fucking 6 years old and just become a Numemon unless you were the fastest fucker around at getting them to take a shit, treated them like a king.

After that, where they're now champions, they're only then just on par with the rookie digimons!!!

You then have about four hours of gameplay before they die and you start the whole process anew. GOD.

Pandemonium. That game had art direction that was simply beautiful. The lush background art, the music and some of the architecture you saw in the levels all made you feel like you were traveling though a fantasy world. The forest levels stood out to me as very immersive despite being built like an ant farm.

Unfortunately, if you go back to play it now you really notice how stiff the controls are, especially when you want to double jump. The second game largely fixed the controls but the "floating ship fantasy world" feeling was gone. The psychedelic style that it went for did not age as well as the original's high fantasy one either.

>Dino Crisis 2
Love it for the point system. Having two characters with different abilities was nice because you always walked by areas your current character could not access and added to your curiosity.

>Silent Hill

Yes, the first one, it's still the best to me compared to RE2 and RE3N. Being secluded in a forest full of cerberus and zero chance of help coming along added to the atmosphere the mansion alone brought. Remake beats it in the atmosphere and mechanic departments but never for nostalgic value.

>Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Basically more alone time, just me and Jill Valentine.

Peak of the PS1 Twisted Metal games. Roadkill was the best. Music was only good in very few levels.

A valid opinion. Obviously we see things completely the opposite.

Personally I got to the final boss with what I believe are the coolest looking monsters on the game. A large dragon, a demonic looking creature that looked like it came from the depths of hell, and an armoured rhino. Same team I have every playthrough, never changed.

The soundtrack and forests are what make the game so comfy. Being in the beetle forest talking to Koris with the Blue Cocoon Master tune playing in the background, I can't describe it.

Although I do partially agree with you on the Unskippable intro, IMO it sets up the story perfectly.

Its kind of hard to get into imo.
I've tried a bunch of times and end up giving up after the second or so boss. Mostly because I never realy learn or understand the mechanics. I would strongly recommend giving it a shot for an hour or so and if something is obtuse (several systems are simply not explained well, as was the norm in those days), consult a guide. Theres really no reason not to for games with systems as kind of backwards as Vagrant story's

>> No.2395340

>>2395335
With Vagrant Story it's even a little worse. Not only are the mechanics explained poorly in-game, trying to follow the mechanics like the game seems to want you to will screw over your chances. The game seems to emphasize the whole monster affinity system, maybe if only because it's the first thing you see when you look at a weapon's stats, but if you don't ignore that and focus on the other types of weapon affinities you're kinda fucked.

It's simple. In the game, you are a badass.. but as the risk rises you get weak. So, you have to take your time to keep your risk low. Chaining attacks together forever will not win the fight. In fact, it will quickly raise your risk level to 100 and you will be doing 0-1 dmg. You cant use just one weapon throughout the game, either. The more of one type of enemy you kill, the more proficient that weapon becomes in killing it, but it also dulls in a different class. Humans Dragons Phantoms and Beasts. I have four weapons proficient in these classes. Dullahan was the first boss i had trouble on... I still hate that fight...

He said:

>nowhere near as good as any zelda game
>any zelda game

It's better than a lot of Zelda games, and "any" is all-encompassing. There have been a lot of shitty Zelda games. I think Alundra is AT LEAST as good as, say, Phantom Hourglass. But when you say that Alundra is "nowhere near as good" as Phantom Hourglass, yeah, I think that definitely makes you a blind fucking fanboy.

Nobody is saying Alundra makes Majora's Mask look like a steaming pile of shit. It's not one extreme or the other. The guy definitely deserved to be called an Official Nintendo Faggot.

>> No.2395392

>>2384838
>>2395375
If Zelda is "too easy" (a common complaint) Alundra is on the opposite end of the spectrum.

From a story standpoint, I find Alundra to be quite interesting and enjoyable. I liked the spin of a lot of the dungeons were Dreams. But I have a lot of complaints about it mainly:
>Puzzles are far too execution Heavy
Miss that last timed jump? Redo it all.
Fuck up one part of a puzzle? Reset it.
The amount of jumping puzzles in the game is really ridiculous. I can respect the game for trying to be difficult, but its not fun to repeat the same steps over and over and over and just hope you get it right. Emulator would be great for Alundra honestly.

>Combat difficult
Its not even difficulty per se. Its not that much harder then Zelda on paper its just that your weapons are weak as fuck. You literally stand there smacking stuff with your flail for like 10+ hits. You could use bombs, but those have their own problems. Once you reach the end of the game, you can get the overpowered sword, but by that point, its irrelevant, since you have the fire rod, and the level 2 spells, which basically rape everything else in the game. I seriously killed the last boss in what, 2 or 3 castings of the fire spell?

Its grossly imbalanced. They even toned down a lot of stuff from the JP release which makes it even more insane to me.

I did like a lot of the mechanics added in Alundra, like jumping, and sprinting and the harder puzzle difficulty but it just went too far in the other direction. I also think it was a few dungeons too long, and maybe a bit too depressing, with things like weapon upgrades being a bit too far apart. I think its a solid 7, but then again, I don't care much for Zelda games.

>And Stanza Inter is a great track.
It's all just 90° turns and straights. No variety, nothing interesting. Porta Kora is a much better choice. While I haven't played the game in way too long, I seem to remember that Icarus has a bit of an advantage on there. Been a Qirex fan since day one though. There's something fascinating about their approach to crafts. I like to joke that they mill them out of a single block of steel, then strap the biggest engine they can find to it. They're perfect dragsters, insanely powerful and fast. Can't turn to save their life though. Air brakes are mandatory. But it makes it so much more fun when you're able to squeeze some agility out of that heavy bullet. And when you do, you run circles around the competition.

Porta Kora has nothing really interesting about it. It's just short and easy, which is why I use Icarus on it. Stanza may only have 1 gimmick to it, but it's a fun and challenging gimmick.
I've always been a fan of AG systems. At least in WipEout 3 that is since in 2097 it's one of the "low speed high handling scrub boxes" that are boring to race with.
Qirex is just an unstoppable tank. You can hit every wall on every turn and still be miles ahead of 2nd because your speed is insane, your shields are decent, and your acceleration almost nulls any slowdown you will take from ramming wall full-speed. Icarus is similar in that you will pretty much always win with it, but it has lower shields, no accel, and even HIGHER speeds so it becomes less a question of winning and more a question of surviving.

>Twilight Syndrome
These is an adventure game trilogy about Japanese teens exploring paranormal rumors at their school. It has a really cool presentation with fluidly animated sprites and vivid environments. The layout is very similar to the first Clock Tower game. The story is somewhat cheesy but endearing. There's very little to do other than move around and talk, but that's fine.

>Addie no Okurimono
This is a really neat puzzle-adventure game that feels like a predecessor to Professor Layton, but with more of an eighties anime/shoujo vibe. You play as a little girl a dream world solving puzzles to advance. It has a lot of academic psychology concepts very well-integrated into the story. The whole thing feels like a children's story book from the mid-20th century.

>Milano no Arubaito
You play as a super cute pink-haired living in a fantasy world, doing various mundane odd jobs in order to get by. It's really just a mini-game collection but gaining experience opens up new activities and choices. What keeps bringing me back is how bright, well-drawn, and cozy everything looks.

>Love & Destroy
This is a mech combat game with excellent graphics for the time and lots of well-done animated cutscenes. What I like about it is that it has a romantic/dating sim aspect, and the girls were designed by the creator of Video Girl Ai for those interested. Overall it's a very well-crafted game that balances its different aspects well.

>London Seirei Tanteidan
This is a seriously beautiful traditional JRPG that takes place in 19th century London, and it looks and feels like a classic Ghibli movie. You play as an orphan boy who wants to be a detective solving cases around town. This game just makes me feel happy and swept up in the story every time. The presentation is commendable, even if the combat and gameplay aren't very deep.

My Toy Story 2 broke down today. Great game, one of my favorites of my childhood.

The DC version probably has the best resolution and textures. There's a N64 version too which probably looks a bit better than the PS1 and no loading times.

Metal Gear Solid, CastleVania: Symphony of the Night, Silent Hill, Crash Bandicoot 2, Crash Bandicoot 3, Final Fantasy VII, Medievil.

The disc broke.
Looking around it seems the DC version does support the VGA 480p mode, making it very much a superior version graphically.
Load times are long, but then again the N64 version replaced all the music that was great in that game.

Everything about JC feels under developed.
The story. The battle mechanics. The monster combining mechanics. It all just feels so underwhelming.

My friend raved about it. I just felt it did not live up to any expectations i had. The introduction, and world made it very interesting, but it just fell flat.

It really doesn't.

The game even shows you damage type and element type on screen when you're picking an attack so you know what's most effective in that circumstance.

It's every dumb asshole who reviewed the game and made guides for it and talk about it at the time when it was released that made a big deal about the creature affinities. The game itself doesn't do that. It tells you to use a piercing weapon or a blunt weapon when your slashing weapon doesn't work.

I played this as a kid and it felt more puzzle than action RPG. I mean, I can take your average Zelda puzzle, they're challenging enough to make you feel smart, but forgiving enough that pretty much anyone could figure it out through enough trial and error. Alundra took it to a whole new level, both with the volume of puzzles and the difficulty, it felt as in every 2 steps in a dungeon I was walking into something more complex than the entirety of the Water Temple and it really turned me off.

I was so scared from that experience that I've never attempted to play it again, is it that bad or was I just a dumb kid?

I missed out on them when they first hit the PSX. Couldn't afford them, and they quickly became coveted in the aftermarket, shooting the price up by unreasonable degrees. So it was a real joy when they were both released as 'Playstation Classics' on PSN for the PS3 - I played Wild Arms 2 first, followed by Wild Arms 1, and they instantly became favourites in spite of translation issues.

I'd like to see the series make a comeback. Good JRPGs are hard to come by.

I could never beat it and I was 18 at the time. I like how the story line is dependant on if you beat the bosses or not, but seriously those puzzles..

I gave up at the dungeon where you go down one floor at a time and there is a save spot and you can't go back up again. There was some thing with moving platforms and lanterns you have to light to open the door, but they go out again before the platform reaches the exit and I couldn't figure out how to get there in time.

I usually beat most games I play so this was very frustrating and I ended up selling it.
