How about a thread for obscure fighting games?
Savage Reign by SNK has throwable weapons and a plane-switching gimmick like Fatal Fury. Some stages even have hazards, like a roller coaster with moving cars to avoid.

It has nothing to do with mortal kombat, it has full directional walking and pickable weapons like a beat'em up, and it's actually focused on grappling like a wrestling game.

Highly recommend checking out Joy Mech Fight for NES. 36 playable characters. Not balanced at all (there's one or probably two characters that basically HAVE to be banned for the game to be even remotely competitive, plus one that's functionally worthless), but surprisingly fun and one of the most amazing examples of what was possible with the hardware.

Cheonha Mujeok for the IBM PC

Korean fighter with some impressive graphics and the world's first (and so far only) North Korean character. Places like HG101 have been calling it unplayable trash but the reality is it suffers from an odd control scheme, from lurking the webs I found that it's possible to remap the controls in one of the included option menus but in order to do so you have to have some knowledge of the Korean language (something which I lack unfortunately). Fatalities that have you input certain key combinations or require a certain situation to be executed can act as further display of your own skill, as well as a way to humiliate your opponent post-battle. They don't necessarily imply violence either, Killer Instinct's fatalities for example don't feature much gore in them. Fatalities are a neat concept and nothing to be ashamed of unless you're a very little kid yourself or a soccer mom that finds any display of mild violence offensive.

I totally disagree with this. Maybe not totally, it certainly is pretty unintuitive and would have been much better had it been made for more powerful hardware, but fundamentally I think it's a fantastic fighting game. Once you wrap your head around the controls, I think it's one of the most satisfyingly complicated fighters of the day. More than any other game, I think it needs a revival.

That game feels a lot like a simplified version of the Federation vs Zeon engine, not surprising since CAPCOM made the original engine before Bamco took over, and they also reused it not that long after in Gotcha Force.

Still, better western themed take on the engine than that shitty f2p thing Bamco was planning not too long ago.

Fighting Layer, arcades. Developed by Arika (formed by ex-Capcom employees like Akira Nishitani), this games plays very similar to Street Fighter EX series, wich means the game is pretty good. Also, features Allen Snider and Blair Dame from SF EX.
The character designs are a bit bland, but some characters have excellent moves, like Vold Ignitio, the deranged final boss. Tetsuo Kato is like a mix between Ryo Sakazaki and a traditional karateka.
Nice graphics, but the sound isn't emulated properly.

And you can fight against a Tiger, a Hawk and a fucking Shark.

S.H.A.D.O.W. War of Succession, often considered the single worst digitized fighting game ever made. The game's plot centers on the Syndicate of Hate, Anarchy, Destruction, and Organized Warfare, a name even a freshman creative writer assigned his first story would've rejected. The game opens with a laughably gaudy CGI gunship flying through New York City up to a penthouse and opens fire, killing Kincaid Storm, leader of the SHADOW crime syndicate. A static image with scrolling text later informs us "police refuse to speculate on the cause of the explosion" (yes, the game expects you to suspend your disbelief that police couldn't figure out a gunship flying through America's most populated city's airspace launched an assault on a high rise penthouse). With Storm dead, his remaining lieutenants must fight to the death to take control of the organization.

Allegedly, programmers were greatly behind schedule, and the attempt to program fatalities would lead to the game crashing upon execution, so they were absconded for the commercial release. Despite the game playing like a poorly developed Beta, an alleged programmer under the name TheMadViper stated, "Yes, it was created by a bunch of guys who knew nothing about making video games and they laughed all the way to the bank after selling it. They were actually one of the very few game developers that made a profit that year!"
"That's exactly what it was. We didn't know what the hell we were doing and did not get much support from 3DO either. Yeah, the game stank, but we didn't fail. It made money."

And there you have it, folks. The story of the worst digitized fighter ever made:

Tattoo Assassins, another MK clone made by Data East Pinball, the guys behind Back to the Future pinball tables, in fact the producer of the game is the guy behind the actual movies. If a company dedicated in creating pinball tables trying out a fighting game with close to no experience is already a telltale sign of things going wrong, it gets better: they were lulled in completing the game in 8 months behind the boon of a nice bonus of 25000$ plus 25$ for every cabinet sold. That translated into working 12 hours a day for all week, all for a crappy fighting game whose only "redeeming" factor was having lots and lots of fatalities.
