Honestly? Retro Dragon Ball games are pretty shitty, with some RPGs being exception.
Probably because most Dragon Ball games up to the PS/Saturn were developed by TOSE. There were games with good presentation like Super Butoden 2, but it's not something that I would like to revisit.

Ban Dai licensed games are usually average at best and clearly made to appeal to the fans more than anything else, this is true not only to DB games, but licensed games in general.
Modern DB games are also like that, but let's not go into there because it's not /vr/.

I honestly think Super Butoden 2 is still fun to play nowdays. Especially if you've got a buddy to play VS with who knows how to play.
The game becomes even better with the turbo mode (I didn't know about this as a kid).

Hyper Dimension or Shin Butoden on Saturn are also pretty decent.

I think the real bad retro DB fighting games were the PS1 ones, Ultimate Battle 22 and Final Bout. Legends was good, although it can feel repetitive and simple, it's still fun to mash buttons and see shit happen. Loved it as a kid.

The Famicom and SFC RPGs are good also, but again, only for fans.

A lot of the DBZ game music sounds a lot like the music found in the Hit song collection OSTs.

>Am I the only one who played the Buu Yuu Retsuden

nope. It was incredibly common back in the late 90s/early 00s over here, when DBZ was showing, usually packed next to either Genecyst or Kgen on kids PCs. Nobody knew what the fuck an emulator was at the time though, mostly because kids either had PCs or Playstations. I immediately recognized it though, even though I didn't knew this game existed until then.

A few years later I managed to snag the French copy complete with manual in the local pawn shop. No idea how it got there, but it was a nice catch. Not a bootleg either (I haven't checked, but it doesn't look like one). There are some marks in the manual but who cares.

Brought it into work a few years back, when we had a party, it was a giant nostalgia bomb for everyone.

And yeah, the game is pretty darn good as well, as long as you know how to deflect the super beams. And it had probably the best Meteo attacks not counting Hyper Dimension.

I wish there was a compilation of all the small animations that characters do when you knock them off screen and they jump back. They happen so rarely, I barely noticed that they are there. I think Vegita does a spit, but I don't remember what the rest of the crew does.

The game was full with so much content, and had a great cast too. It's only fault is not using the correct colours on some attacks, and no proper 6-button support.

And here's a little oddity not many know about. Super Butouden 2 almost made it to America.
The title of the game was going to be simply "Dragon Ball", and some characters have weird name changes.

This scan is from a latin america Club Nintendo magazine, at the time, DBZ still wasn't broadcasted in latin america (at least, not legally), but by 1995 (which is when the game was going to be released), the original Dragon Ball was airing and probably up to Piccolo Daimaoh saga, and many people knew about DBZ already. Probably what stopped Ban Dai from releasing the game in America was that there was no market for it in the US. A shame really.

Great games right there anon, I'm jelly, even tough I have a fairly faithful bootleg cartidge of SB2 from the old days that still kicks ass, and I can play Shin Butouden on the Saturn (backup CD). One day I'll get both legit games, good thing they aren't rare.

Also, as much as I love Shin Butouden, I agree it's not really as good as SB2, or even SB3 gameplay-wise.
But without comparing it to SB2, it's still one of the best DBZ fighting games. Great roster, interesting new mechanic to send your opponent off to another plane on the stage, classic Butouden controls, now even better thanks to the Saturn pad (you just have to change the default control setting so it can play like SB2 with both L and R to dash in each direction. On default control you can only dash with R and the d-pad, and use L to jump to the sky. Pretty shitty control scheme, but it can be fixed so no problem).
My main problem with Shin Butouden is how small the stages are, you can't dash far enough, your opponent is always near, similar to the tournament stage on SB2. The split screen goes crazy sometimes spinning around because of you or your opponent moving in the opposite direction below. That, and a few other little details that I find make it not as smooth as SB2, but presentation-wise, it's very pretty. Great animation intro, the VS screen before you go into battle are amazing, these character profile pics are badass. Music is amazing as always, lots of remixed songs from SB2 like Gohan's theme. Sadly it lacks a story mode, like Super Butouden 3. But it makes up for it by having that big ass roster.
I don't know, they fucking nailed it with Super Butouden 2 and then couldn't match that kind of quality again, in both presentation and gameplay. But Shin Butouden is pretty close.

Pretty sure it's the opposite.

I know what you mean, man. Outside of Capcom and SNK fighters, Super Butouden 2 is one fighting games I keep playing today, not because it's DBZ (or at least, not just because of that), but because it's a genuinely good game.

It was sometimes red on the manga coloring.
I haven't noticed it until now actually.
What's weird is that it's blue on the actual game boxart, but all his sprites on the game have the red sash.

Anyone played the PC Engine game?

oh god I can remember completely playing thru a non-translated version of that one circa 99/2000. Talk about trial and error mixed with aimless rpg exploration... ugh. that bonus fight with ssj vegeta at the end was nuts too.

Me too, playing untranslated DBZ RPGs was the first thing I did when I discovered emulation back in 99/2000.

I played through the card-based ones for Famicom and Super Famicom, and also the Super Gokuu Den games on SFC (weird mix between visual novel/quiz game and RPG battles)

I could never figure out how to play the Gokuu den games. I can beat the first two enemies without problems but then Yamcha comes and I get rekt so hard. By fucking Yamcha.
It's been about 14 years, since I played it the last time though.

The battle system is simple but can be hard to get around if you don't know how it works. Basically it's like a rock paper scissor game (with more options), so you need to memorize which attack is better than the one your opponent will do. For the most part you can spam Kame Hame Ha and win though.

There are english translations by fans by now, I think they're complete for the most part although they're not professional, so it should be easier to play (also on the quiz parts)

Hold L+R to charge up your ki and increase your speed. You should be able to interrupt all of his attacks.
