Is this the best game in the series? Looking to start one and I recall hearing most people prefer 6 to the other entries in this series. Also first person RPG general I guess.

Yes.

It being better than M&M1-5 is debatable, but of the M&M games that aren't locked to a grid, it's solidly the best.

YES. this game was my childhood!
Best part was that I knew nothing of the lore going in so the big 'tomb of varn' twist blew my mind.

who here always made sure to keep the flute when them?

Personally think World of Xeen was the higher point of the M&M series, but for the ones that started doing the free-wallking deal MM6 isn't bad.

That being said, I'm not really a giant fan of any of the free-walking ones. You end up getting swarmed by six hundred enemies every time you go to a new map and it turns into a fight-run-fight FPS where you're just hunting for spots where you can cheese.

Oooor you can not rush headlong into every fight and instead fight enemies in manageable groupings.
There's no map where you just have to herp your derp into the giant clusterfuck of enemies.

>> No.2343058

>>2343052

Except every major map screen. You get off a boat or walk into a field and suddenly there's 600 zombies or whatever.

You don't have to rush headlong into them, but you have to sneak forward, drag a few out, kill, then repeat. It gets fucking old and it's not strategy - it's just cheesing.

Well, for me 7 - it was more friendly, better graphics and more classes. Also it was first time in my life when I joined in any game to dark side. Do you have in your party in any game a FUCKING LICH, a ninja, a warlock with his goddamn dragon and a villian (badass villian who capture princesess, buahaha)?

Also 8 is a little worse (still good but not a level of 7 or even 6), and 9 is catastophic. I still not play in older parts, I tried III but this was the time when I got a Arcanum so I forgot about that...

I'm about to begin Wizardry : Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord without any knowledge of the game. How fucked am I? Also, any tips?

Ragequit/reset the system while suffering a critical loss. That way your failure won't be recorded and you can continue from a few steps earlier instead of having to start from scratch.

You can fight Murphy's Ghost as many times as you want.

But note that it changes all your good characters to evil if done enough times
Not that it matters besides NINJAAA

I played VI-VIII last year, and I want to try World of Xeen sometime soon.

I grew up playing these, I think 4-6 is best, with 7 just slightly out of the top tier. Worlds is really really fun, more simple maybe than 6+, and an older style of gameplay (dungeon crawl), but you'll have a blast. It's just good, clean, satisfying rpg fun.

Is there a way to make WoX more challenging without playing like a retard?
I found 3 too easy for my liking.

IV is my favorite but the whole world of xeen is great. VI is really fun but i prefer the combat in III-V. II is a beast of a game i recommend the genesis port.

Go to a tavern at the beginning and roll a weaker starting party, put a barbarian in there (can't use better than splint mail if I recall) grab some other spell casters, etc.

2 would have been better without the insane amount of monsters. Constantly facing 240 of the same type is just annoying and leads to spamming quickfight with divine intervention thrown in when necessary. Or just flee when you face physically immune monsters. Area effect spells were simply to costly and limited.

>> No.2346759

I hear the first or one of the first M&M games has time travel. How extensive is that? What changes between the eras? Can I influence the future?

>> No.2346763

>>2346748
The starting stats aren't that important. You start with something between 10 and 20 and end up with in triple digits.
What weapons and armor you also diminishes in face of the better materials. An obsidian dagger/robe is far better than a diamond flameberge/plate mail. The only real difference is how many missile weapons you can field.

>> No.2346767

>>2346759
M&M2 but it's mainly a gimmick. The other centuries are completely empty with only a few special encounters and one dungeon you need to access. Influencing the future is part of the main quest.

Wizardry Ly-something Saga for the SNES is great. With an English patch it is the definitive version of the first three Wizardry games.

IIRC not much if you're into the open world aspect, but Elminage games are great wizardrylikes, not retro however
