It's pretty nifty. It sure was good to play Game Boy games on the big screen, back when emulators weren't a thing.

Some games, like Metroid 2, came with their own custom palette, too.
And some games were enhanced altogether for the SGB, like Donkey Kong '94.
Both Gen 1 and Gen 2 of Pokemon have their own special frames (blue's frame was so much better than red's)

Only way I play GB games. Playing on a brick gameboy is awful, and the only tolerable way to play it now is on a GBA-SP with a backlight or on one of the adapter types (super GB, GBplayer). Really sucks that you can't play the GBC games on the Super Gameboy though.

If I still had my Gamecube (got rid of it once I got a wii, because you know, 100% backwards compatibility), I'd probably get a gameboy player.

I've honestly considered getting a Retron5 just so I could get some GBA games again. I'm not even trying to shill because I do think the thing is objectively bad, but it also does HDMI out which is the only thing my capture card takes. So it might not be 100% awful. I do like to own the games and expand my library, even though I know GB and GBA emulation is virtually near perfect, it just feels wrong playing it on a PC to me.

It's alright, but you're way better of with a gameboy player and a gamecube.

>> No.2340350

I'm pretty sure there are good GBA emulators for the Wii.
Also, what's wrong with playing GBA on the PC? Just play using a TV and a gamepad. You are playing on an HD TV and not a CRT, so it's no big deal.

The other good alternative is to get a DS or DSLite, you can play all GBA and DS catalogue. DSi isn't backward compatible.

>Also, what's wrong with playing GBA on the PC?
Nothing. I just prefer to play on hardware then emulators. I find that if I use emulators I tend to abuse the things like slowdown, save-states, and speedup, and it hinders my enjoyment, or I go the whole "Yeah I beat Castlevania 3, it was easy" when really I just save scummed. So I tend to avoid them.

And I know the Retron is an emulator box, but I can pick one up for basically the cost of an AV capture solution, although I still wouldn't be able to capture GC/Wii, and original Xbox without an AV capture.

The main gripe I have with the GBP is that it outputs 480i (or 480p if you're one of the three people in the world with GC component cables). You need to use cheat software to hack it into outputting a sharp 240p instead.

I seriously don't know why 480i vs 240p wasn't an option with the GBP

>> No.2340420

Just wondering, can you use a GB flashcart?

>> No.2340434

>>2340420

I could play my chinese multicart, so yeah, I don't see why the SGB couldn't take flashcarts.
The thing is literally a Game Boy in the form of a SNES cart.

I wish they would do this with all handhelds. Pretty much the only reason I don't play handhelds anymore is because I hate looking at tiny, poorly lit screens when I could just play games on a big TV. The Super Gameboy made GB games way more enjoyable to me and these days I don't think I could play them without that. I mean when you're 10 you have a pretty high tolerance for bullshit (especially with video games) but that fades with age.

I agree.
I really thought companies like Capcom would utilize it when they did the whole MH3U on Wii-U and 3DS, and Nintendo with their 3DS/Wii-U releases for like Smash Bros.

It just makes sense. If you wanna play on the go just transfer the save and go. If you wanna play at home play at home.

Too bad it doesn't support the full gbc pallet.

supports Game Boy Color games.

That's not true.

Neither SGB supports GBC-only games.
Only the GBC games that work on normal gameboys work on both SGBs, Google a list.

You could do this on a GBA - You could hold a button combination ( Up + B ect ) and the palettes would change.

SGB is pretty cool. Never had one growing up tho i did have the GBA player that connected to the GC. Did pretty much the same thing.

Super GameBoy 2 does NOT support the GBColor, I wish it did, since my only other option is the blurry GameBoy Player (Even at 480p with a hardware scaler, yes, I've tested).

For features, the SGB2 has new borders and a link cable port (There is a button code to unlock the old borders). But the BIGGEST improvement is not advertised, it has an internal clock that matches the GameBoys, rather than using the SNES clock like the SGB1, this immediately fixes the "sped-up sound" and wonky gameplay issue of the first one.

Further, BOTH models of the SGB support flashcarts (Tested EDGB on SGB2, works well, borders show up)

Now if someone could direct me to a Wideboy AGB seller, I'd be all over that shit. GBC and GBA games on a RGB N64? Fuck yes.

The SGB takes it to a whole new level. The GBA gave you eight palettes to work with, one for each direction+A or B. The SBG has I think eight PAGES of premade palettes, with like five or six palettes on each page. AND you could make a custom palette with any color for each of the four palette colors.

And some games just look great on it. Donkey Kong is the goto example, but Legend of the River King looks amazing on it as well.

>> No.2342930

you could do that on a normal GBC too,

Thanks to the Super Game Boy, I can't even emulate Game Boy games without at least using it as a template.
I made this Game Boy Pocket border for /emugen/ a while ago that I still use for that purpose. I really wish there was a way to inject custom borders into the SGB so I could use the few borders I did make with its added benefits.

If you're willing to emulate, just get a softmodded Wii or a Raspberry Pi (which also has HDMI-out).

Point being, the SGB blows those out of the water.
All these and being able to pick and choose.

Still, the GBC has a bit of custom software for Metroid II, and probably other games, that is impossible to replicate on the SGB, much to my chagrin.

I love the super gameboy because I had so many more gameboy games growing up. This was mainly because they were always cheaper than the console versions of the same games so my parents would always get me the least expensive version.

If you have a GC modchip and can boot from SwissGC, you can force the Game Boy Player to run in 240p. Disadvantage is that this takes a few minutes and a disk swap every time you want to play something.
