Xenogears is a hundred mecha series smashed together; it's not really that great, and was completely boned by Square pulling people off the project to finish Final Fantasy VIII. It could have been something; instead, it was a quarter of something.

It's really a shame it turned out that way, but it's really not the best or deepest thing ever. I would have liked to like it more, because I am very much a mecha fanatic, but being a mecha fanatic sadly killed it for me.

Lets be honest Square's side projects were a lot better at the time then most of their main series games by that point in time. Parasite Eve, Brave Fencer, Tactics, and yea as unpolished as it was Xenogears was a philosophy class. You can keep orphan highschool with paint eating Zell and ADHD Selfie.

Xenogears is not really that deep when you take out all the high school philosophy classes out of it, it's actually pretty loose especially when you get to disc 2.

if anything, the Ogre Battle Saga was really put together well in its entirety.

Old fart here, even if it wasn't my primary job but I regularly worked as a screenwriter for cartoons,tv series,(one) movie and even video games (my first job was on this field when i was barely 20 as it was my main focus when i was young and naive).
And I personally think that the worst thing that happened in this medium was the focus on story.
i will always take >>2335593 then any other wall of stodgy text,dialogue or cinematic.

I am not telling that storytelling can't be done in video games.but they are... you know.. games so IMO they should focus on solid gameplay and mechanics first to achieve their idea and then build something coherent around it and not the opposite as everything else is a bonus.
Any creative work (video games for example) need imperatively to be build in flawless harmony between a technique (craft) and an idea (concept,the thought behind it)

For example (maybe not the best) the Big 2 in survival horror genre (aka RE&SH) were coherent in their respective Ideas :
RE : B movie horror,
SH : disturbing/pernicious horror.
the 2 shared the idea that real horror is to be helpless against what you are facing.
As for the technique:
Everything in their graphic and sound assets work to achieve their vision of horror.
All aspects of their gameplay were the core to achieve the 2nd idea of been helpless as tank controls and items management force the player to be cautious about his actions and surrounding.
RE story served that B movie style.
SH story served the disturbing/pernicious horror.

So if writing a story is not serving the Idea, then a 2 line text is far better then any long speech.
Also as those are the main problems good story don't have to be complex/abstruse to be good, it also don't need to explain everything,.

Also From my own experience Video games tend to attract all the losers of others disciplines with inferiority complex and sempiternal search for recognition also explain the mess we're in.

I really want to finish Xenogears, the Story and the world is really interesting, I know about disk 2 but I mostly blame square for taking The FF7 title away from Gears, they did give us FF7 which is a great game too but I want to imagine the amazingness we would have gotten if Xenogears had it's full budget. And even with the budget cut The team still managed to give us a great game.

Xenogears' graphics are better than FF7 imo and the battle system is also creative. It has a lot of stuff crammed into it and may be unfocused and half-finished but as part of the diversity of games it needs to be there.

The ugly polygon characters in FF7 really ruined the experience for me, Cloud's arms when walking in the area maps look horrible.

FF7 may not have been the best looking game (character wise, the pre-rendered backgrounds are great). But its also a game with lightning fast pacing. Fun mini-games to break up the standard grind from A-B and has a simple but fun combat and customization system.

Xenogears has a fairly interesting combat system thats definitely not nearly as well thought out. Has literally hours of exposition at a time, followed by a trek to your next destination for more dialogue. Xenogears pacing would make a race between a turtle and a sloth look like the god damn indie 500.

So I can't dislike graphics in an over hyped game? I pre ordered FF7 even, so I'm not looking back, the character design (in maps, the combat was ok) was bad at release already.

The arms look horrible, and I have to look at that for 50+ hours. Tifa's arms are fine when you get to play her for a while, why make the main character so ugly, I'm critezising the design, not the technical limitations.

Plus ocnsidering Takahashi fucked up everything with Xenosaga too even though he had no FF8 to fuck up his project, it's pretty evident where the truth lies.
