>can't play ape escape

Because the PS Dpad is absolute garbage.

>> No.2325978

Why don't pre Dualshock games recognize the D Pad on Dualshock controllers? I can't play Road Rash with a Dualshock

wut? The analog light has to be off for the dualshock controller to even function on pre dualshock games.

The PS Dpad is a god send.

I press the light and it still won't register

Every time I replay ff7, I'm always a little off put by the lack of analog support.

Oh god, you're not pressing the actual light are you?

>> No.2326019

Other way around for me, I was more used to play with the original controller. I still find the dualshock analogues kind of weird to this day.

PS d-pad is an abomination though.

>Another thread that separates oldfags from newfags

Ape Escape is literally the one and only Playstation game that requires dual analog. There are less than 20 games that even support analog control and racing games are the only ones that give any significant advantage.

You people probably play fighting games with the analog stick.

>> No.2327139

WHAT THE FUCK is this shit about the PS1- D-Pad being crap?!

These fags better not be confusing the original with the PSP D-Pad or I'm gonna hafta go medieval on they ass, they're worlds apart.

>people criticize the Genesis controller for only having 3 play buttons
>nobody criticizes the PS1 controller for not having any analogue sticks

Why the double standard?

>> No.2327179

I have pretty big hands so the PS1 pad has always felt a little awkward to me. The dualshock, however, fits like a glove.

Why the hell did the original PS1 start off without analogue sticks? Essentially Sony was going to strictly release 3D games to compete with Nintendo. This is the reason for the 3D Megaman Series.

>> No.2327294

>>2327216
Because analog joysticks had fallen into oblivion. Nobody considered having more than one direction input at the time.

>> No.2327297

>>2327216
They didn't bother because no one knew where 3D control was going at the time, and Sony didn't know anything about gaming. They wanted to wait and see what happened and respond accordingly. The N64 joystick was met with good response and valid criticisms, so Sony took those and consolidated it with their own design to get the same thing. They did it with force feedback as well.

Sony also was fond of taking a 'everything Nintendo does, double it'. What made it not just an SNES pad at first? double the shoulders. Rumble? Put in two rumblers. Analog? Put in two sticks.

People were told to hate SEGA, either in their shitty playground wars/AVGN/they took the 'Genesis does' and "blast processing' commercials as a personal attack on their entire existence.

the PSP's d-pad is okay
except on the 1000, where it's absolute trash that doesn't register diagonals

the PS1's d-pad is pretty decent, but it's still a bit iffy (I get some really weird mis-inputs playing KOF sometimes)
the real issue is that the PS2's d-pad is absolute trash, which seems to be where this whole thing came from

Sorry for being born after you or getting a PS1 after you.

I actually think the PSP's d-pad is the best of the playstation dpads (3000 model at least).
But all in all, PS d-pads are just retardedly desgined to me. Like I don't get why would they design a d-pad that look like it's 4 separate buttons, but in the end it's actually the same piece of plastic, only split in 4. I don't get it.
If it had the same layout but they were 4 separate buttons, it would be still weird, but at least it could be easier to register different kind of commands that way.

PS Vita d-pad is god tier however. An absolute joy

>> No.2328028

>>2326003
>>2325995
I can confirm, the PS dpad is pretty atrocious. You have to press harder for the diagonals, pressing it lightly doesn't always register, and the whole dpad moves around in its slot, which makes pressing different directions unresponsive.

Recently tried to pay the first Tomb Raider on the PS1 (never played the series before) and I just can't do it.
Trying to play a 3d game with the d-pad is very awkward
