I've been playing Earth Light and Earth Light - Luna Strike recently, but I don't know how playable they are if you don't know Japanese. The gameplay (turn based strategy game) is pretty easy to grasp and the story isn't a huge deal.

Since you have a DS and are looking for classic mecha sRPG stuff definitely pick up Front Mission.

Front Mission 3 for PS1 is also great. It's considered the best in the series.

PS3 just got the first Armored Core on psn.

Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden has a fan translation for PS1 that's really easy to grab and while not exactly /vr/ the first two Super Robot Wars OG games were officially translated on the GBA. Definitely worth checking out the SRW franchise if your into animu, robots and sRPGs.

The translation patches are all on RHDN IIRC.

Then you just go anywhere and grab the originals. You'll probably be more likely to find it patched than not just by search.

Assault Suits Valken is pretty much a mecha anime in game form. Very cinematic and highly recommended (though play the translated Japanese ROM since the US version is unfortunately censored).

You should check out Xenogears. It's an RPG with mechs, but you're not in them all the time or anything. It's pretty fun if a bit weird. Disc 2 is kinda...well, you'll see.

If you want a really fun series of action games, check out the Armored Core series. There are a ton of games in the series and I wouldn't call a single one of them bad.

From Exact's rival Zoom, Genocide II is excellent mecha action for the X68000. There's a Korean DOS version of the FM Towns port that has built-in MIDI sound and other gizmos.

Gonna suggest SD Gundam GNext, a strategy game for the SNES where during combat, you can control the mecha suits manually against others, which can be a bit handy if you're good enough to let you wreck the AI's good suits with generics.
