The last one 404'd on itself.

Like the last time, discussion of the Ps1, games, accessories and whatnot.

>> No.2314975

My favorite console. I remember being 13 years old and playing on a video game rental store in my city. I was always the only girl there. I played in a house of a friend for many years and I only had one in my house in 2009... It' s broken now, I play ps1 games on my ps2... didn't buy a ps3...Before buying a ps2, people used to say that ps1 games are better and I didn't believe them until play those games. They are nice games but I never felt the way I do when I play ps1 games.... No console is better than ps1. Still playing and I think I will play it forever

>> No.2314979

Working through all the RPGs that the system had. Despite loving 4-6, not the biggest fan of FF VII-IX but that may be because sprites age better/the SNES games got remakes. Even then, VIII and IX feel unfinished. VII is still excellent and I can appreciate how much it did at the time.

Overall, Suikoden II has been my favorite so far. Thinking of going for Grandia next. My Xenogears save deleted itself after I put like 22 hours into it so it will be a while before I try that again.

FFT was also pretty fucking cool.

I imagine it's something to keep in mind, but given PS1s are still so common, I doubt it's much worry. Early versions are probably going to suck and be super expensive, it's one of those "20 years from now when your laser is dead" solutions.

The only SD solution I'd even consider right now would be the DC one, because of GD-roms. Even the HDD for the PS2 is something I've never bothered with, simply because I have a far better compatibility rate with burned disks.

It's not sarcasm because emulation is not perfect in ways beyond just compatibility rate. Non enhanced emulation using native resolution look like shit, enhanced emulation with upscaling and everything makes it look like shit in other ways. PS2 seems reasonable but does not have a perfect compatibility rate and either requires booting from USB using Pops, or burning to disc which no one ever does. PS3 HDMI makes PS1 games look like shit and PSTV is still a rocky boat. PSP, again Pops, is not anywhere near perfect.

This game has the shittiest movement and most tedious combat. You'll fall off so many platforms and ledges due to bad controls, and the checkpoints are ridiculously unfair. The inventory works like shit. The music is pretty good, but stands in stark contrast to what's happening on screen

E.T.: Interplanetary Mission is also horrible. It has no music. It's a shitty puzzle platformer type of deal, where you levitate objects and put them on buttons, which opens doors. Sometimes there are enemies, sometimes you walk up/down slopes, sometimes you run from something, and there are health items and one-ups. Graphics are kind of okay. It's incredibly boring.

People who get mad about PSX are people who were never around at the time. It was a common abbreviation, and became even more popular after the PSone was announced, because it became an easy way to distinguish between the two.

Literally nobody ever used "PS" in the west. It was Playstation at first, with PSX commonly used because it was the codename and easy to fit into magazine text, then the PS1 later after the announcement of the PS2.

I was around at the time, I know that magazines called it "PSX", but I still don't get why we need to keep using that when PS is not only shorter, but also more accurrate.

There isn't even any other console which could be abbreviated "PS" as to generate confusion (like the Gamecube and the Neo Geo Pocket Color, which is why the official abbreviation of the Gamecube is GCN and not NGC).

I'm also guilty of this though, I don't call it the PSX because that'd be like calling the Nintendo 64 the "NU64", but I still use PS1 even though I should be using PS.

I never actually heard anyone call a PlayStation a "PSX" until the 2000s. Seems like it didn't really start till internet blew up and the PS2 came out.

I still rarely hear it. "PSX" also isn't labeled anywhere on a PlayStation. But some games have "PSX" on the sticker if anyone remember's that. That and with the actual PSX release, I think it's pretty pointless and confusing to call a PlayStation a PSX.

Also, I'm familiar with these abbreviations (FC, SS, etc) because that's how you search for these systems on japanese auction sites. They are also the official abbreviations used in publications like Famitsu, etc.

Famicom isn't the abbreviation of Family Computer, it's the shortened name. Abbreviation is indeed FC.

Even with shooting, the control setup wasn't good. Playing the original PC port of Resident Evil is a clunky mess when you have to deal with an awful control setup. Yet for whatever reason, the horror vidya enthusiasts will cling onto this awful setup.

I played Wipeout back in the day via demos, rentals and friends who would lend it to me but never had one. I wanted to get Wip3out SE when I saw it on a magazine but when I had the money I didn't find it on any local store and somehow I forgot about it.
I tried to run 2097 yesterday via emulation and could not get any emulator on my 64-bit Linux machine to work (except PCSX-R, which ran it slow God knows why). I even tried to resort to my faithful pSX emulator and it complained about the lib gtkglext being 64bit (never happened before), does anyone have any tip? I stopped trying because I was reaching the maximum frustration I can tolerate.

Anyway, I have a more game-centric question. I've read that in the Special Edition of Wip3out they changed the physics of the ships a bit (in regular 3 they were the same as in 2097 I recall) and I think someone around here said that for the worse but didn't give any explanation. Do any of you know what are the (subtle?) differences in ship handling between 2097, 3 and 3SE?

Playstation is my childhood. I wanted one so bad and when I finally got one as a present I couldn't believe it. Up until that point I had been stuck with a master system (being too poor to afford 16-bit - £45-£60 cartridges!).

The only bad memory I have is that the first one we bought (an early model with the separate RCA inputs) started having CG skipping issues after about 1 year. I remember watching the CG of the Tiny Bronco plane in FF7 stutter across the sky. I had this weird phobia that I had caused it damage somehow, but with the benefit of age and the internet I found out that the earlier models were known to have that kind of problem. Damn it. Out of warranty and had to buy another when we had the money. Agony of waiting, but then relief as they released a new model and price reduction.

My first game for it was command and conquer, which I was obsessed with. Then came Final Fantasy VII - which blew my mind, Tomb Raider - which I returned back to the shop and got Micro Machines V3 instead. Then came Vigilante 8, Alundra, Colony Wars, Metal Gear, the other Final Fantasies, Gran Turismos, Vagrant Story. Those were some good times.

...a onechip 6 wire mod on a PAL PSOne will boot authentic PAL discs and backups from any region, but *not* out-of-region originals that use stealth antimod.
