Since it's a prequel to The Tower of Druaga I was planning on playing that first. But really don't know how much I will be able to understand The Tower of Druaga anyways. I tried a English patch for Ki but sadly it didn't work. Anyone know a place that would have an already patched version? I searched but couldn't find anything.

Plot is pretty fast and loose in these games, so it's not a deal breaker.

I will add that if you are going to play Druaga, play a translated version of the PCE game. It's not a port, but rather a revamp that makes the game far more enjoyable than the arcade original, which is too trial-and-error to really get in to.

I believe Namco Museum Vol. 3 on the PS1 has tips or just outright tells you how to get the chest on each floor. It's not in-game though, IIRC.

The PC-Engine version has cryptic hints from Ishtar on each floor which I think strikes a happy medium of the accomplishment of figuring out the chest and not being in the dark:
E.G. "Examine what Druaga protects" (attack the wall)
"Light sinks the treasure, darkness makes it rise" (turn out the light in the room and wait for the treasure to appear)

Along with the RPG elements and different armor and weapons to find, it's probably my favorite version of Tower of Druaga.

Of course that was all from the fan-translation patch of the PCE game (which was unfortunately JP-only).

As for the PCE version I haven't tried the fan patch yet but I liked what I played of the game - I agree that not outright telling the player but giving them a hint is a nice compromise.

A while back this one guy I was talking to was supposed to be getting me photocopies of a "Druaga Journal" that he stole from an arcade but I haven't heard back. I'm bummed, I'd have loved to see something like that.

There's not many games like Quest of Ki. It takes its mechanics and squeezes perhaps every single possible idea out of them, and then wrings out some more for good measure, for good or ill.

I'm amazed that so many of these levels were designed around precise manipulations of Ki's animation frames. Did they ever think people were going to beat it?
