What fully 3D Gameboy games are out there? I can only think of a couple:

How the hell did they pull that off on the original Game Boy? Wasn't it effectively the power of the NES (albeit with a different architecture)?

You basically fill the screen with a bunch of different tiles, then redefine those tiles on the fly to give you a full-screen (or nearly full-screen) bitmap display. Then just draw whatever crazy polygons you want.

As for how they squeezed out enough CPU time to actually render that shit, I haven't a clue, but it's pretty amazing.

I think you're overestimating basic 3d. These games didn't do anything fancy like modern hardware, it pretty much just boils down to doing some multiplications and additions on some vertices each frame and filling the resulting geometric shape with a uniform dithering pattern. Games either lacked perspective transforms or used a simple approximation based on depth. No shading effects like lighting or shadows. The geometry was simple enough that things like depth and collision were probably just approximated in an internal 2d representation.

Would be kind of interesting to see how they integrated it with the GB's sprite based display framework, though. I'd guess that the screen was broken up into a grid of sprites and each sprite was dynamically created each frame, which is probably why the framerates on these games was pretty bad.

I'm actually more surprised that there weren't more impressive examples of 3d on early game hardware.

The game boy used a z80 workalike, not a real z80. Also, both the master system and the game gear also have z80s. Also, the z80 is stronger than the nes CPU. (It has twice the clock speed, for starters).

>> No.2315641

>>2315640
The z80 in the SMS and gg and the work a like in the gb have twice the speed, I mean. The GBC has a faster one.

>> No.2315669

>>2315640
Clock speed doesn't mean shit unless you're comparing processors of the same line and even there you have to consider other factors.

>> No.2315768

>>2315669
True, but the z80 is still better than the processor that was in the NES. In fact, internally most of the hardware of the SMS is more powerful than the NES, with the exception of the sound chip which is terrible in comparison, unless you have an SMS FM module but that was only released in Japan only worked with a couple dozen games.

The z80 and the NES' CPU are roughly around the same speed (z80 had twice the clock speed but took twice as many cycles to perform the same tasks, generally speaking), but the z80, among other things, has more registers and 16 bit support. Obviously there are a bunch of other things to consider, but most people I've spoken to would agree that the z80 is at least roughly equal to, if not more powerful than the NES CPU.

>> No.2315807

>>2315768
>NES CPU.
Why not call it 2A03, 6502 or 650x?
The Ballly Astrocade with its 1.8 MHz Z80 is not better than the NES aside from its support for four players out of the box. Not even the Intellivision with its 16 bit CPU.

>> No.2315820

>>2315807
What does the Bally Astrocade have to do with anything? This is about the 3.5 MHz z80 used in the SMS, Game Gear and a workalike in the Game Boy. Obviously the Astrocade would lose against the NES, but that isn't even relevant. Point is, the original Game Boy has a CPU that can be considered roughly equal or slightly superior to the NES, depending on how it's used. The GBC has an upgraded one that's even better.

I called it the "NES CPU" instead of those names just so there's no confusion/

>> No.2315824

>>2315820
To add onto this, considering the amount of debate the "z80 vs 6502" discussion seems to generate on the internet in old computer enthusiast forums. I think that they were both good CPUs for their time and neither can conclusively be called inferior to the other.

>I called it the "NES CPU" instead of those names just so there's no confusion/
You could do the same for the GB. The Sharp LR35902 in the GB and the NEC uPD780C-1 in the SM3 aren't identical even when both are Z80 derivatives clocked around 4 MHz.

They were doing that with video back in the early 80s with games like Star Rider, too. I know games like Iridion and the SNES Revolution X did that with animated image loops for backgrounds.

Anyone played the NES port of Elite? It's actually pretty cool. Shame the GB version wasn't finished beyond that demo:

seems to be a large look-up table that they just move around the screen. gives an impression that it is 3d. quite a common trick on old pc demos.

>> No.2323358

Games with pseudo-3D polygons have been around since the first generation of 8-bit processors. Even the Vic-20 runs a Doom port. The key to bona fide 3D graphics is the z-buffer, which allows for hardware-rendered 3D calcuations. Without it, 3D can be simulated in software but inaccuracies lead to flickering/shifting polygons. N64 was the first home console to implement a z-buffer. Technically, the Playstation 1 did not have a 3D engine but a competent CPU (and some wizardry from Naughty Dog) sure as hell made it look good.
