The 90s was the beginning of edutainment as we know it. It was so full of good games.

Try the 80s. Carmen Sandiego, Oregon Trail, and Math Blaster variants were all common in schools 25-30 years ago.

it's a good board game, it never really worked too well on computers, despite the fact that it was popular in schools.

Yes, I am aware, but the 90s really caused the boom for both edutainment cartoons and edutainment games

I would say there were two booms myself, in the early 80s you had a boom of games mostly written by actual teachers and at first spread from school to school, and then in the 90s you have a boom of professionally developed edutainment games. Whether the later is a good or bad thing is a matter of opnion

There were equivalents to Math Blaster that were common in schools in the 80s. Not sure of the names, but they did exist and they were widespread.

There were tons of edutainment games in the 80s that really only got better graphics in the 90s. My first PC game was Mixed Up Mother Goose which was largely about getting kids to type and form basic phrases. Later games relied too much on cursors.

But there are a lot of other titles too.

If it counts, I plunk my kid down for some Incredible Machine every once in a while. There's a clone or two of that still being made sometimes.

Other than that I think it's centered more around portable games now on certain platforms, what with these kid safe tablets cropping up.

I am studying to be an elementary teacher so maybe I will find out soon. I remember ten years ago when I was in elementary (I graduated 5th grade in 2006) we played Word Munchers Deluxe in computer class.

If I want to play these old PC games, with physical copies, would a Windows XP do? I have one that has the BSOD but I could fix it. I was thinking of keeping it to use for older (2000 - 2006) PC games.

Anyone remember Mental Math Games? More importantly, anyone remember the special version for schools that had LAN MULTIPLAYER TRON LIGHT CYCLES BATTLES?!

It was just called "Cycles" but it played like a 4 player version of the arcade Tron Light Cycle game (which is basically the same thing as all those "Snake" games). You had to answer math problems to maneuver your bike, PVP in the classroom was sweet (and very distracting).

I've looked for it forever with no luck, I can only find the standard "non-classroom"/non-networked edition. There were other multiplayer games but Cycles was the king.

Sounds like it's rough to get working on beyond Win 2k though, I wasn't able to get it to run just now on Win 7 64-bit by fiddling around with compatibility modes but it was fine on my Win95 Virtual PC. This Amazon review acts like they got it to work on XP at least: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2DK3EANHG5LRU/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B00029SRB8&nodeID=229534&store=software
