Official controllers long since out of production?
Ebay faggots hiking the prices of crusty sticky replacements out of reach?
What you need is a third-party controller! Only suitable for player 2

This is a thread to suggest and review third-party controllers. Which ones are worth getting when official controllers aren't available.

I fondly remember the Archer joystick. It was go to for the Atari 2600. It just felt far more comfortable and responsive than the normal Atari joystick.

I know /vr/ will dogpile on me for not using magical time travel powers back then to just "HUR HUR USE A GENESIS CONTROLLER"

Why did so many devs do this? It doesn't fucking work.

I used to own that one, it was pretty good.
It was mainly designed for fighting games or games with sequence commands, since it let you program them, but I actually used it the most to play platformers, just because it felt good and looked cool. I remember getting it with DKC2, good times.

It works perfectly fine. Unless you have the hands of a six year old.

I always thought that was very nice looking controller. I think I had the non-programmable Genesis version that I converted for 4-player Amiga gaming. Felt really nice in hand.

>>2306062
I had the Saitek version of that controller. One of the better no-frills PC gamepad I ever had. Loaned it to a friend and never saw it again.

I've got this. Pretty solid but the buttons are a touch too far apart. Maybe I am just so used to how the official pad is. Was also made in gold but they're hard to find.

I also have a Quickshot, it's naturally 2600-compatible. I have a second one that for some reason causes the console video to become static-y whenever you press buttons. I don't quite get that.

Also, that joystick is okay, but the real champ of single-button sticks is the Maze Master. Pictured here is a single-button version, which is weird because I swear mine at home has two buttons on the bottom to allow left- or right-handed play.

Still, great pad. IIRC it even has a switchable gate to go from 4-way to 8-way mode.

Correct. The hands of that six year old need to be on the other controller. Because the only one you're gonna beat with that controller is a six year old. Whether you take advantage of the programming features or just button mash with your thumb it's a sure way to get the edge on your 6 year old sister.

Pic related is a controller with 6 face buttons that actually works.

Well I didn't say the Quickshot/Archer was GOOD persay, just far better than what else I had. It still felt awkward to use. I didn't have the static problem, though.
