Play your Dreamcast online back in the day, or want to now?

>Guide to setting up the internet on your Dreamcast with modern equipment
https://nobitleftbehind.wordpress.com/2014/12/14/how-to-get-your-dreamcast-online-without-a-broadband-adapter-or-a-dial-up-isp/

>Games that still have online servers
4x4 Evolution
Maximum Pool
Quake 3 Arena (compatible with broadband adapter)
Phantasy Star: Online (V1 and V2) (compatible with broadband adapter)
Sega Swirl
StarLancer
If I'm wrong/missing any please let me know.

Anyone know if it's possible to emulate a LAN connection, similar to how Hamachi works, with modern technology?

Honestly, I haven't even tried it. I just thought it'd be super interesting to do, but then I realized none of those games are anything I want to play online. Most of them are available on PC and probably are easier to do and have larger communities. Seems like it should work though.

I just want to play ChuChu Rocket! with people.

It wouldn't be the best way to post, but you should be able to. Just keep in mind, the DC is old technology and can't handle modern websites. Luckily, 4chan is still pretty basic.

Yeah, after posting that, I decided to see if there was a rerelease. I might download the Android version right now. Or, more likely, look for vids of it online first. I don't want to get stuck with FFVI-tier remake quality. That would make me :-(

Looks as good as the original but the touch controls look kinda fucked and, as far as I can tell, it doesn't allow for hard-button operation (my Android device has hard buttons and it's GREAT for most retro gaming purposes). It also lacks online multiplayer. It does local, though.
For 99¢, though, I might get it anyway, if only to play with friends. I'm sure I can convince a few of my friends to spend a buck on it.

Oh. I thought I saw that there was LAN support but there was apparently a small amount of games with support for a link cable to connect two consoles instead. No official cable came out, but there's some unofficial ones.
Pic related, Dragoncast VS Cable.

Seemingly compatible games:
>Aero Dancing i/F
>F355 Challenge
>Virtual On Oratorio Tangram

Virtual On woulda been cool to play online.

Source? Why only these versions? Couldn't you connect to their servers from the same game not released by them or is it something hard coded into the game?

Seems the connection is 33.6k. Not sure if this guide is the same as the in in the OP but
"A 56k modem in your PC will only connect to the Dreamcast at 33.6k/bps max. This is because the upload speed on a 56k modem is capped at 33.6k, and that is what you're basically doing: uploading information to the Dreamcast. This isn't as bad as it seems, though, because 56k modems rarely if ever connect at the full 56k over a phone line. The data is traveling nowhere near as far either, which means less data loss because of line noise. And if you're using broadband, the data will stream into the Dreamcast at a full 33.6k/s without the lag that is characteristic of dial-up connections. In case you're wondering, PSO works great in this setup; 33.6k is more than enough bandwidth to play online."

If you don't have a broadband adapter, you can't use an ethernet cord.
You CAN use dial up, there's free dial-up, but the guide in the OP lets you avoid that.

the problem with the guide is that the prices of the the network router and VOIP router have gone up substantially since that article was written and it would now cost the same to just buy an ethernet card. Though I suppose you could just find different products that did the same thing.
