Does anyone have any recommendations for the PC-FX? Preferably ones that don't really require knowing Japanese. For those who don't know:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC-FX

The PC-FX was the successor to the PC Engine (a.k.a. TurboGrafx16), and only released in Japan. I think there's like 62 games or less in total released for the system.

The one recommended game I could find was "Kishin Douji Zenki FX Vajura Fight", which is supposed to be a 2D sidescrolling beat-em-up. I haven't tried it yet though, beyond setting up Mednafen and booting the game to see if it worked.

Also, in searching for PC-FX iso files, I came across this disgusting display:

Let's hope not. Today's resellers at least have a (highly dubious) commercial purpose.

But that...I'd have to resort to lawyer-logic and double-speak to even _begin_ to warp reality enough to justify that travesty.

More on-topic though...I find it quite ironic that simply by listening to its business partners and customers NEC fucked itself over with the PCFX. It makes you wonder if there's any truth to that old saying "Nice guys finish last.".

What costumers wanted the PC-FX in late 1994? They should have released it a lot earlier or offered lower than that of the PS1.
Omitting 3D capabilities wasn't a bad decision but Motion JPEG alone wasn't enough to trump the competition.

I'm sorry, but the one I'm going to recommend requires you to know japanese, but it's a really good and somewhat complicated game: Powerdolls. It's a hex-turn based strategy with girls riding giant robots.

Is the UI similar to the DOS version? Maybe he could play that for a bit and use acquired knowledge to read the PC-FX game's menus.

I'll suggest Last Imperial Prince, a side-scrolling ARPG designed by Yoshio Kiya after he left Falcom, kind of like another Ys III.

Is there any kind of homebrew for this? Are there unofficial tools to code for it? I say unofficial because I read once that there was a PCI card that you could use but I suppose that's hard to find.

This thread got me interested in PC-FX emulation, so I got the iso of Pia Carrot and the translation patch.
But the game/emulator (mednafen) doesn't work: there's just a black screen. II've got the pcfx bios file, by the way.
What do?

>> No.2300371

>>2300361
The problem seems to be that the patch doesn't change the error correction hash and Mednafen doesn't like that. The solution should be to use a better patching program or use an older version of Mednafen that allowed to skip that check.

But that was the thing; they WANTED to release it a lot earlier than everyone else' offering for that gen. They consulted their devs and they said "Nope, we're good here. Let's wait a few more years.". See, the TG-16 itself wasn't ever ever EVER supposed to compete with the SFC or MD. They actually wanted to slaughter the FC with it, which is why they released this very compact, spry little killer with two 8-bit processors. But by the time everything was all in place and "out-of-the-gate" (apologies for the horse racing metaphor) the SFC and MD were nigh, and they got to compete against something that wasn't even around when NEC designed the PC-Engine. Well, naturally they thought even with CD-ROM addon capabilities this couldn't work for long (besides the fact both SFC and MD were rumored to have their own addons in the works), so the engineers were told to quickly go back to the drawing board and design a successor architecture that would once-and-for-all kick Nintendo's shit in (Sega was considered a non-issue because only the crazy Americans liked their MD that much). This upgraded hardware would preferably be released sooner rather than later, of course.

And so thus the PCFX, codenamed "Ironman", was born. But when NEC and Hudsonsoft approached all its customers in Japan and asked them if they'd be interested in its release they got back the surprising answer "Nah. We've got a good thing going with the PC-E here in glorious ol' Nippon right now. Don't rock the boat! Wait a few years.".

You can guess what happened from there.

>> No.2300442

>>2300390
They could have used those years to improve the design instead of pulling it out of the mothball when a new threat in form of Sony's PS1 arose.
Technically the released the Supergrafx as an improved PCE but it was an even bigger failure than the PC-FX.

>> No.2302909

the pci card isn't actually compatible with a real fm-towns, so any game developed on it won't work on real fm-towns hardware. it's a joke really.

>> No.2302960

the MD was always third place behind the PCE and SFC.

Also, I don't think you have your facts straight regarding the PCE. Hudson originally tried to sell the hardware to Nintendo, who refused and said they weren't interested. NEC wanted to get into the console business, so they partnered with Hudson to produce the PCE. Nintendo shooting down Hudson resulted in the creation of a new competitor, the PCE.

You have to remember that the Famicom came out in *1983* and was designed before that time; the PCE was released in 1987.

The PCE was never designed to "slaughter the FC", it just ended up as a competitor since Nintendo refused to purchase the hardware design and a competitor (NEC) stepped up and snapped it up instead.
