I'm 30 years old, had a NES growing up. Really only played super mario and ninja turtles, a few others i can't remember. By the time I really got into gaming, I got a sega mega drive/SNES.

I love games, love old games I played, loved the fuck out of SNES games I had missed out on like the final fantasy games. However, the NES, I barely know it. The games seem too aged to me. I know this is a bullshit mindset as I am open to trying good games of all types, on all platforms.

Tell me, what is the best NES emulator and what would you say were the top 10 games to get on it.

>> No.2289502

MegaMan series ( MM6 is the easiest, if you want to start with that )

Dragon Warrior 3, and 4. The first two are nothing special.

Castlevania 1,2,and 3.

That's 11 games right there. Guess you could take away Castlevania 2. Some people like it, some don't. It's worth a playthrough though, in my opinion.

Journey to Silius
Recca summer carnival 92
Gimmick!
Adventure Island III
Mother
StarTropics
TwinBee
Ninja Gaiden II
Star Force
Contra

I could go on, the NES/Famicom has a lot of great games.

I use FCE Ultra Gx on Wii to emulate.

Also OP, FCEU is a pretty decent emulator, like this guy said. But you can't go wrong playing NES games on the real thing, if you can find any. Start checking thrift stores and pawn shops.

No idea about the "best", I use Nesticle for windows and it works ok for most games.

Games I always return to:

Battle of Olympus
Turtles1
The Guardian Legend
Snakes Rattle & Roll
Shadow of the Ninja
Ninja Gaiden
Xevious
Mega Man 4
Rygar
Wizards & Warriors 4
Double Strike/Twin Eagle
Eliminator Boat Duel (in 2 player mode, does not work in Nesticle tho)

Nesticle is horribly horribly outdated, don't use nesticle

FCEUX sucks a little, but not nearly as much as nesticle. There's better options for both wii and PC (libretro on wii, nestopia or puNes on PC). But nesticle is garbage because it's so goddamn old and not updated.

As a lifetime NES fan who's played nearly every game including probably every single playable-without-jap-language-skills japan-exclusive title, these are what I'd consider the top 10 EXCLUDING Mario and TMNT because you said you'd already played those:

>in no particular order
Summer Carnival '92 - Recca (fastest 2-D shooter of all time)
Contra (favorite on the system, also try its sequel Super C [the japanese release of which, entitled Super Contra, features a 30 lives cheat instead of the 10 lives one from the American release, so it's easier to beat])
Mega Man 2 (3 is also pretty great)
Castlevania III (the original is also awesome)
River City Ransom (fun open-ended beat 'em up with TONS of freedom and crazy shit you can do)
Ganbare Dunk Heroes - Nekketsu Street Basket (insanely fun "full contact" basketball game, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED EVEN IF YOU NORMALLY DON'T LIKE SPORTS GAMES)
Tecmo Super Bowl (one of the best games ever, like the above you should play this even if you're not a fan of sports games)
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (retardedly hard, but fun)
Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu (basically 8-bit Smash Bros.)
Super Dodge Ball (one of the funnest games ever, the japanese version, entitled Nekketsu Koukou Dodge Ball Bu, is faster so that's probably the best version)
Joy Mech Fight (quality fighting game with 36 playable characters [8 are available at the beginning, the rest unlock when you beat the game on hard mode])
Double Dragon II (one of the best beat 'em ups ever)

OK, that was just over 10, but close enough.

If you're into shooters also try 1942 and especially its sequel 1943. Marble Madness is another game that I'd recommend along with Dr. Mario. There's plenty of other fun games for the system, so if you're looking for more recommendations then just ask.

Current top NES emulators are puNES Nestopia, both of which are cycle-accurate.

Some game recommendations:

The Legend of Zelda- The Hyrule Fantasy

I particularly recommend Little Samson as one of the most addicting platformers I've ever played.

Both NEStopia and puNes are cycle-accurate emulators. Unfortunately, puNES is not cross-platform (Windows only), giving the advantage to NEStopia even though puNES is more accurate still.

All emulators are not equal, and HOW an emulator works its magic is just as important as it being able to run the game. Cycle-accurate emu's emulate the system in question so well that even the timing between and duration of the faux-CPU it's conjured up are in perfect synch with what you'd record on the physical hardware (often the emulator can do slightly _better_, thanks to the fact mass-produced consoles will always have their little sub-cycle manufacturing quirks while the tech docs such emulators are based on are an idealized conceptualization of what a physical system _should_ be doing). Most cycle-accurate emulators are aimed at preserving the hardware rather than simply allowing people to play games for free, but as a side-effect of their intended mission they almost always tend to be the best (and most resource-intensive) option for their chosen console.

Although I suppose it's possible, I have never seen a cycle-accurate emulator perform so badly that an HLE (high-level emulator; think ePSXe, PJ64, FCEUX; this is in contrast to the cycle-accurate's LLE or low-level emulator) was a better option.

Does that shed a little more light on the subject?

There is no "best" NES emu.
The NES is so damn old that you can close your eyes ynd choose your emulator at random and it will be pretty much visibly perfect (it may not be cycle accurate but who gives a damn, the games will work like they did on the original). Hell even the ages old Nesticle will work with the games in a "playable" state.
That said I use NesterJ, because I like supporting of the ones that not that many people use. Works perfectly.

If you're going to play Mother, I recommend doing the GBA re-translation of 1+2 done by Tomato. He did a really good job translating it over while using the expanded cart space of the GBA port to fit a more verbose translation that's more natural and accurate to the original. It also has an 'Easy Ring' which helps to alleviate the original version's total lack of game balance.

There's also the Mother 25th Anniversary version, which I believe takes the same translation and fits it into the NES game, but it also does a complete graphical overhaul that is hit or miss. It may not be worth your while.

Here's 10 games I really like on NES that aren't Mario or Ninja Turtles:

Zelda 1
Zelda 2
Castlevania 3
Metroid
Legacy of the Wizard
Batman
Joy Mech Fight
River City Ransom
StarTropics
Sweet Home

Honorary Mention for Balloon Fight and ExciteBike, which I love but aren't for everyone.

Nesticle doesn't emulate the PCM audio channel. Also, it's mapper support isn't that great. Not bad for 1997 however.

On a modern PC, I'll use puNES. It's the most accurate NES emu overall, and the built-in NTSC filter is one of the most authentic ones I've ever seen. Surprisingly, it needs a more powerful machine than one may expect.

It's pretty good but has its quirks. May have become obsolete with the release of the Everdrive N8. I have not used the N8 myself but the Everdrive carts for Mega Drive and SNES are quality products.

>how stable it is.
Stability isn't an issue with flashcarts. If the cart hardware supports the rom then once the game is flashed it's identical to running the real cartridge. Just pay attention to how saved game backups work on your cart of choice, because games that support saves will overwrite each other.
