Apart from Doom, do you guys ever play the vidya together?

I'm not talking about playing with people around you, I mean as a board.

>> No.2277947

I've never tried that.

Would like to hear some stories though. The good, the bad and the ugly, anything.

>> No.2277961

>>2277947
The only story I have is that I played on ST on ggpo with some dude from /vr/ (I think) and he was really fucking good.
But then most people on ggpo are really good at fighting games.

back when /vr/ first came out, as a board we played King of dragon pass successfully, and I personally got 2 people to play Majesty with me of which I lost to the dude somehow getting wizards to level themselves to 13 without dying and then portaling on my castle.

Was pretty fun

we've tried netplay threads before, I don't know how well they turned out though.

actually scratch that, a few years ago (wow, /vr/ is getting up there!) I played Super Bomberman 5 with some blokes on here. No idea how it works but I'd do it again.

Anyone want to play Smash 64? I've been wanting to play for a while now and this would be a pretty perfect opportunity.

I did play at anything doom related with /vr/ at the time of creation of the board.
It was fun, especially playing at wudunit.

Why can't /vr/ put together a thread every week to play online, doing some stupid ass tournament and so on.
And bomberman sounds fantastic.

There's no reason we can't really.

I believe the biggest issue before was not being able to get everything set up for people. The threads to organize online games were more spent getting people's emulators set up than they were actually playing.

We'd need a period where people got things set up and working, over several days or weeks. Then we'd get interest by starting with tournaments for games that anybody could play, like Smash 64 or Bomberman. Then you could develop into regular tournaments.

Could also get interest by giving away GoG downloads or even physical cartridges/disks as prizes.

Would you want voice chat as well? It can help in some ways and hurt in others.

We used to, but there was fairly low attendance and Bomberman was regular.

>>2278125
Also this.

We use Mednafen (primarily) and a dedicated server to netplay.
IRC channel is:

#/vr/_netplay
I just regular the IRC channel, other's could provide much better info.

This shit sounds more and more interesting, but it's true, we need ONE emulator and a single setup to make everything smooth.

Mednafen does that for most every console, sans N64.

Use http://www.finalstarmen.net/ instead of the other link.
Also has a mednafen tutorial

>>2278152
Possibly, but we use Mednafen. That's probably never going to change.
If you, and other people, want to use it, great! Go ahead! But it's unlikely the regulars in the group will be switching over.

scheduling for stuff would help a lot. They do it for real-life meetups, might as well do it for online ones too.

>> No.2278245

Eh, there's nearly ALWAYS people in the IRC channel and it seems things are really spur of the moment.
There's often taking turns in 1 player games (such as Castlevania) and I think a few people are playing that one good Digimon game for PS1 recently.
I guess creating events will give more incentive to join and do stuff at a particular time, but ehhhhh.

>> No.2278257

I know there's a Steam group for HOMM3 now. Only a few ever got the HD version from what I understand, so multiplayer would be done by other means.

This reminds me, when Galaxy goes public will that be the place to do multiplayer for DOS/Retro Windows?

>> No.2278281

Depends on how many game will use Galaxy for multiplayer and not just as a download tool.

Not /vr/ but if they get Nox working then I will be all over that shit.

>> No.2278286

no reason you can't keep doing spur of the moment things. Scheduling events just makes it easier to ensure players will be around and ready to go.

>> No.2278306

>>2278282
yep, basically emulation of passing a controller on a couch. Or you can have a bunch of people on one controller at the same time and try to beat sanic like a bunch of autists

>> No.2278308

>>2278282
Mednafen allows users to take control of (and drop) certain controllers.
Any number of people can be watching someone play the game through this netplay and we just rotate who's using controller 1.
Games like Bomberman '94 support up to 5 players at a time.

>>2278286
Oh certainly, I'm just not sure if people are interested in scheduling specific events. The group is more active at ~9pm EST or so and I'll bring up the idea then. Honestly I just mostly lurk and chat and don't do a ton of netplay. Too big of a backlog.

I mean, I get most of them require more involvement and time than, say, a plataformer, and that a lot of people here has little free time, but games like diablo II where someone can create a realm and anyone can enter at any time would be fun.

No. You're thinking Shadow Madness, which was made by a western team (including Ted Woolsey, apparently).

B&B plays more like a multi-session tabletop campaign, and as such, pretty much requires multiple people.

Like the tripfag pointed out, it does get pretty hack-and-slash〜y, especially if you pick Fighter, but at least there's a bit more to the gameplay than "press A to win".

That's for you guys to decide.
It's just that I happened to get a lot of enjoyment out of B&B, and have gone back to it more than once.
My last time through, I played solo and rolled Elf/Elf, just in case that's of any use.
