Solaris is the best game on the Atari 2600

There is no doubt. If you disagree, you are a moron.

Post only if you love Solaris on the Atari 2600.

What was the limit for the 2600? Would a game like Super Mario Bros even be possible on it (obviously with some graphical concessions)? Or even something along the lines of Dragon Quest?

>>2279347

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zeV-yi-iY4

if you want to port a game like super mario to the 2600, you will have to reduce the sprites on screen, and then the number of enemies on screen. You could, but it will be pretty boring. An Atari XE computer would be able to handle it i guess.

>> No.2279365

>>2279361
I don't see why you'd have to reduce the number of sprites. Lots of games on the Atari had way more sprites on screen at once than in Mario. Unless you're talking background tiles, but those would probably just be replaced with solid colors.

Kaboom! is really fun, but you can't emulate it. Have to play it with a paddle controller, and that means on the 2600.

Very true. The syntax is dog easy, but getting everything in the right order in the allowable space and time is like solving a Rubik's cube.

It's also refreshing to throw out the problem-space models of most modern programming and deal with bare metal as your key abstraction.

There are great disassemblies of Combat and Pitfall floating around out there for anyone who wants to get started.
