Can we please talk about this fucking game?

Replaying it for the first time in literally 17 years and enjoying it a lot.

What was good about it? What was bad? Where do the subsequent off-shot Mario RPG games rank, for better or for worse?

>> No.2275467

Before one plays this game, always to go gamefaqs and print up a hidden chest guide, because there's a couple that you have one shot to get and that's it. Did you get the one in Mushroom Kingdom Castle, OP? If you missed and you care about it, you might as well restart your game.

>> No.2275470

>>2275467

Wait, what happens if I get all the hidden chests?

I knew full well about the one-time hidden chest right at the start of Mushroom Kingdom and ignored the opportunity.

I just checked, Apparently nothing except the compliments from the chest guy in mostro town. Weird, I always assumed you'd get... something.

Such a unique game. There truly is no other game with the feeling this game has.

>> No.2275550

similar to chains in Vagrant Story, it's impossible to do 100 super jumps by pure timing or sound alone. The timing of Mario's landing varies so that using the sound or rhythm as a guide is useless.

I've never done it without abusing save states.

The Super Jacket is insanely good too.

>> No.2275557

>>2275550
It's possible though. SMRPG runners use high-count Super Jumps as an easy way to do high damage without having to level up.

Anyone love that scene when Mario almost took a swing at that kid in Rose Town for gassing Geno over Mario and Mallow having to stop him?

I didn't catch that when I was a kid. But playing recently I was like "Oh shit, Mario, what the fuck?"

>What was good about it?

Probably the best turn-based JRPG battle system ever. GREAT characters. Actually funny (only JRPG to ever make me literally lol). Side quests that are actually enjoyable to do. Perfect length. Cool setting.

>What was bad?

No Luigi. Isometric controls are BULLSHIT.

>Where do the subsequent off-shot Mario RPG games rank, for better or for worse?

None of the others ever felt right. Mario RPG is one of those things that ever really only been done right ONCE, but that one time was near perfect.

Overall one of the best JRPGs of all time.

Its hard because the timing changes like three times I think. Its on beat with sound and animation for the first like 10-20 or so but past that you need to do it before he lands which is awkward as hell.

>> No.2275718

This is the game that is pretty much default for my mind in terms of music and gameplay.

I mean, I guess I used to play it when I was a wee lad, I don't remember that part. But I do remember discovering it as a teen and loving the fuck out of it.

What standard are you judging the battle system by? It doesn't seem like anything special to me and it also seems like they weren't really focusing on it

It's just harder with emulation. SNES hardware has much easier timing.

>> No.2276721

Good- easy to pick up, unique enough classes with simple level/equipment system, fun and lighthearted while still engaging, side quests were not too fetchy

Bad- suffers the standard JRPG easy if you grind a little bit, jump timing on emulators

One thing in particular I thought was neat that I haven't seen another RPG do (though I'm admittedly working with limited genre experience) was getting semirandom buffs mid-battle from defeating enemies. Make the math behind it more transparent and work modifiers in and that's the sort of thing you could base an entire system around.

>What was good about it?

The entire premise of a Square developed Mario game, it's a brilliant crossover
The goofy characters and character design
The writing
The music
The simple but addictive battle system
Bowser fighting on Mario's side, alongside Peach no less
Bowser getting characterization for the first time, and the fact that they nailed it
Art style
Everything

>Where do the subsequent off-shot Mario RPG games rank, for better or for worse?
The Paper Mario games are the only ones I've played. I love those games too but they don't give me the feeling that SMRPG does.

I wish there was a proper sequel to it. Playing the isometric levels in Super Mario 3D Land really makes me want a sequel on 3DS, or even a 3D Classics port. Those levels in 3D would be amazing.

But I know that a modern sequel would probably not be able to capture the same magic.

That fucking soundtrack. Every song is perfect.

Wrong sir.

Wrong.

I have done it, and I have done it legit.

It is done by sound and extremely good reflexes. It's not wise to shut your eyes, but it's not good to use them either.

By the time I'd reached the end, they were mostly crossed, and both sides of my vision were this dark blur.

I did it on Boomer. It one-shotted him and I had to beat Exor before I could confirm my achievement.

There is no stress like 100 super jump stress.

I assume the idea behind it was to emulate the same feeling as in the original games. You never really got any rewards outside of what what's in the hidden blocks playing SMB after all.

>> No.2279278

I always thought this game was odd in that it's full of hidden things and bonus equipment, but the game is so easy there is little reason to actually collect that stuff.

>> No.2279334

Easily one of my favorite games.

>What was good about it?

Mostly childhood. Music, Bowser, Geno, Fighting with Peach, Change of pace from other Mario games.

>What was bad?

Looking back on it, it is really a rather bland game. But I still rank it my favorite SNES game, because I've played it into the ground. You can grind way too easy as well.

It would be great to see a full-fledged sequel, I guess Paper Mario was supposed to be (one of my favorite N64 games).

>> No.2279346

>>2275462

Paper Mario is the best Mario RPG if you don't mind the lack of challenge. Best presentation, writing, pacing, everything. It was lean but not barebones, so it never hit a lull.

Going into non-retro territory, Superstar Saga is good and funny as well, the other Mario & Luigi titles are garbage.

Thousand-Year Door is good but too bloated with unnecessary fluff and side-stuff like a typical JRPG.

>> No.2279445

>>2279346
I agree with this. Paper Mario 1 was a really well designed game. Thousand Year door placed too much emphasis on storytelling over gameplay. Most of the areas in the game are literal hallways that you have to go across 3 or 4 times to listen to funny dialogue. Glitz Pit was fun but the whole game shouldn't be like that.

Superstar Saga is also amazing, I don't know why none of the other 3 sequels were able to capture that.

>everything after Gusty Gulch being absolute trash
bad opinion

>> No.2280759

I think the best part is just that the pacing is lightning fast. There is virtually no back tracking (aside from what, 1 bit in the main story). It hits all the right notes in JRPG, and it adds some fun platforming most of which is easy or very optional. The combat is easy and fun, and there isn't huge blocks of exposition like later Square RPG's.

Over all I think its a 9. Definitely a cut above the rest.

I enjoyed the fact that Mario never talks but uses his motions to convey his message to everyone.

>>2275604
It was the game that got me into RPG's and the Super Nintendo in general. I got it when I was either 6 or 7 and was able to beat it by the time I was 9 and then did a bunch of replays but never found that first hidden chest. I spent hours with my friend jumping around in that one room in the castle to find the last one. Fuck that.

Paper Mario 1 is a great successor but I really wish they mentioned stuff from the first game or just made it it's own series completely instead of teasing us.
