How are the pilotwing games?
I'm thinking about picking up the snes one via club nintendo and now I'm interested the whole series.

They're all great, the /vr/ ones especially. SNES Pilotwings has less sandbox appeal than 64, but it's more challenging on the whole.

Pretty good. Yes, the SNES is more solid with challenges. N64 is more sandbox style.

WiiSports Resort airplane game is a spiritual sequel to PilotWings, and it was later turned into PilotWings Resort for 3DS. Not as good as the first two, or as charming, but its very calming game.

Exploring the various islands in 64 was magical as a kid, and it's still a fun game. It has some secrets, great music, and improving your score offers replay value. I never played much of the SNES title, but the sandbox aspects of the 64 game make it one of the system's masterpieces in my opinion.

>> No.2272318

I hope Michael Keaton's played the Birdman mode. Being able to land in nearly any place on a map is rewarding in and of itself because coming to a stop with Birdman gear takes patience. A new PW featuring more options for free flight alongside the main game would be ideal. For that matter, I might still have that note-sheet of ideas for a new game I wrote years ago.

To me, it wouldn't have had the same impact had it been that way. The N64 was a magical system that made me see gaming in an entirely new way, and this was my favorite game to show it off. Suddenly I was free to go explore entire islands while before I was limited to crude mode 7. The leap from the previous generation felt so massive, suddenly it felt like I was actually there flying around. I think I spent days on end just flying around as birdman imagining what every little area would be like in person and trying to land in tricky spots to take cool photos. Pilotwings 64 will always be a very special game for me because of these experiences. I treasure this game.

Well, this is true. Back in 1996 when the N64 was released, there were few games that actually felt like SM64 and Pilotwings (both launch titles), I also had a PC back then, and I had played "impressive" games like Flying Carpet, Alone in the Dark, various flight simulators and so on, but N64 set up a new standard as far as actual gameplay in 3D goes.
Many shit on the N64 controller and to an extent they're right, the stick wears off after years of use, but it really wouldn't have been the same with a dualshock analogue or with a gamecube/wii nunchuk stick. The precision and sensitiveness is not comparable to the N64's 3d stick.

As a kid I bought PW64 because it was the only game available at launch other than SM64, otherwise I don't think I would have been interested.
However, I remember enjoying it, the game's visuals and music were soothing and really felt "next gen" back then, nothing like those crude games on 3DO and PS1 (also had these). I enjoyed the game more as an adult though, as I got to actually get good at it and clear all missions including the extra ones (I would have loved to unlock those as a kid, damnit).
However, I remember just fucking around back then. Flying with the gyrocopter around the mini states or the resort island while firing missiles at everything (including the twin towers and the poor whale), that was just pure fun.

Another early N64 title I think was impressive, and still is a great game to pick up and play today is Wave Race 64. That water was unbelievable back then, and the gameplay, holy shit. Didn't like the Gamecube sequel so much (it wasn't done by EAD, but by an american or canadian dev)

This level utilizes the secret warp on the little states map to take you from the west coast to the east coast. Not intended to be used with jumble hopper, but can be handy if you know how to get in the building. Normally takes several mins to get to the goal.

An additional thing this does not mention is that Goose/Ibis have the smallest turning radius for gyrocopter. Lark/Kiwi make the best use of thermal currents in the hang glider by being able to gain and maintain elevation the best. Also, Hawk/Robin's hang glider speed is preserved while turning much better than the others.

I have no clue. I have searched memory addresses in emulator searching for how it happens but I didn't find anything.

As far as I know the only conditions you need to do it is to run out of fuel while in mid air, fall to your death or hit something to die, and then have your feet touch the ground while you are in the initial death cutscene. If you fly too high in the air after dying and your feet never touch the ground before the game automatically shifts to the second death cutscene (with you upside down in the ground or something), the glitch wont happen.

Also, this only ever happens on the two levels that you push balls into a goal.

PW64 is actually developed by a team of americans (they also did Beetle Adventure Racing and a few other games, they mostly worked on simulation games for PC I believe) in cooperation with Nintendo (I believe the music was done by a japanese guy from Nintendo, and shiggy is the producer).

PW on the SNES is 100% japanese though.

True, my bad.

Actually, the director of the game is japanese, the same guy from Super Punch-Out.
And Paradigm (the american devs) didn't really made any videogame before PW64, From wiki:

>Founded as a 3D computer graphics company in 1990, Paradigm primarily worked on realistic flight simulation technology for major space and aviation clients. The company got its start in game development when it was contacted by Nintendo in 1994 to aid in the creation of one of the Nintendo 64's launch titles, Pilotwings 64.
