You gotta kill him off before he gets his second hit (first round will always be defense buff but second is usually, though not always, ice 1; sometimes, it's power buff). A speed bottle and/or successful shield breaker/defense 2 will help.
Alternately, you can start the battle with your main character dead if your sub character has revive 1 (Olvan and Kamil are the only ones other than Valsu that do) and revive your main into play, so it's two against one. Magic Water won't work here, though, only the revive 1 spell. But that could be seen as cheating, I guess.

You know, I've played through 7th Saga dozens upon dozens of times and have only had the sub character betray me once and once only. It was Olvan for me, too. Before then, I had no idea they could do that.

Most challenging character combo to play with is Lux and Wilme. Actually, Wilme with /anyone/ as he is, by far, the worst character in the game. This is because he was overpowered in the original Elnard so they nerfed him something fierce for the 7th Saga translation. The reason Lux/Wilme combo is a pain is lack of any sort of healing and buffs as well as really, really shitty magic.
