I owned Thunder Force IV as a kid but couldn't really get into it. I loved the graphic and designs but it was just too fucking hard and I couldn't even manage getting past level 4. I think I felt the same about shmups in general.

Now I appreciate them much more though. I didn't really get much better at games, but I saw people playing these games who became really really good at them, and it looks fucking awesome to be so good at them. The harder the challenge is, the more satisfying it is to play through the game without dying. There are not many games with such a challenging difficulty apart from multiplayer games perhaps, but multiplayer games are either full of broken stuff (fighting game characters for example) or you just depend too much on your team. And constantly trying to bet your highscore basically gives infinit replayability.

Mystical Ninja 64
I enjoyed it as a kid but never finished the final boss
Later in life I got another copy and as I played it I was able to enjoy the humor and internet helped with the big robot battles since I knew what the hell the controls and combos were this time around

I liked this one but I figured much more of it as I grew up.
It's amazing how it goes beyond just country stuff and every time it goes deeper and deeper into social reality, plus there are some jokes that you don't get as a kid
Also, it retroactively references a lot of 4chan memes, Guy Fawkes song? More like epic fail guy song

And in this part Pink becomes a neckbeard trying to get a GF who keeps parodying Metal Gear Solid before it came out

I remember renting it and just thinking it was the most garbage game ever.

Now its one of my favorite games.

I am a sixth gen kid. I want to get into video game related Youtubing but it's awkward when I have no experience with the games. I guess that leaves me with an untainted view on many games,

I never played most classics. I can only name Sonic CD, Sonic Adventure, Super Mario 64, Spyro 2, Spyro 3, Kirby 64, Kirby Dreamland 3, Crash 3, Kirby 1, Pokemon Red, and Pokemon Silver. I have Sonic 1 through Knuckles, Metroid, SMB1, SMB3, SMB2, and Rayman 2 but I haven't beaten them

It's incredibly obvious to me now why I didn't "get" this game when I was a kid. It's for all intents and purposes an incredibly accurate chore simulator. I even tried playing this game again as a teenager only to have the same reaction of boredom and frustration. It wasn't until recently that I started to appreciate how realistically rewarding this game made clean-up duty feel. It's like a hard-mode Animal Crossing.

Shenmue. I thought it was slow and boring at the time. Now I still think it's slow, but it's mesmerizing. I get lost in it the same way I do with a great movie.

Not specifically /vr/ but

A buddy brought over PS3 and a few games. X-Com Enemy Unknown was one of them. I played it because... well I don't fucking know. He hadn't played it, didn't know what it was about. I'd never even heard of it.

So now I like RTS's

But the older stuff somehow doesn't appeal to me quite as much as X-Com did. But I have a much renewed appreciate for them.

Been meaning to go back and play Bahamut Lagoon because of that.

That game would literally be three times as good if it didn't have that loading hiccup between each level. Takes me out of the zone/flow every time.

Is there a way to emulate it to not have that loading hiccup?

If you do ever come to own one, beware of the maintenance they require. The joysticks and save backup seem to need attention about every year.

Looks like your geometry is off a bit from the picture.

>The joysticks and save backup seem to need attention about every year.

The leafs only need frequent adjustment if the cab is played a lot. The grommets in the sticks on the other hand are real bastards for stiffening up and cracking over time. You could replace the original sticks with optical variants, although they won't feel the same.

The original board has a holder for three alkaline batteries which means you need to keep an eye on it for corrosion. I've seen boards modded to use alternate battery solutions, though. In some cases NiMH packs that recharge while the cab is is plugged in (actually a pretty awesome solution now that low self discharge NiMH batts exist), and in others the original battery holder is replaced with a lithium cell.

I can't recommend the latter though because 3V isn't really enough, being right about the threshold where the RAM fails under the original battery pack.

>>2278821
Yup, thats it.
The joysticks usually are not a problem, but it's easy to forget about the save batteries and let them rot.

Might look into a lithium ion solution.

Two big ones: Nethack and Mechwarrior 2.

When I first started playing MW2 I was just on the cusp of being able to play it; I could manage well enough if I disabled the heat management but I didn't really have the mechanical skill to fully enjoy the game. I liked it though; I just didn't really know what I was doing. Now it's one of my favorites.

Nethack, however, was way out of my league. I was (and still am) really big into Diablo so after I'd put a few thousand hours into that I decided to check out some roguelikes. I really didn't have a good grasp of what the game felt like to play, however, and it was a long time before I came back to it.

Goldeneye on N64

I thought it sucked as a kid compared to Quake because it was not nearly as fun to run around in Agent mode and just shoot shit. I found the higher difficulties way too hard.

When I got older I realized that the harder difficulties require a more methological style of play, was finally able to beat them and love 00 Agent mode. Now I really appreciate that the game tried something different as compared to other FPS at the time.

>> No.2279226

Not disliked, but Final Fantasy 1 I was simply too young to really understand. I was 3 when I played it, and while I loved it, I couldn't actually formulate a strategy to defeat the marsh cave.

In actuality, I RPGs didn't really "click" with me until after FFX, at which point I started analyzing battles and abilities to make tactics and strategies to defeat them.
