It's almost as if they are trying to discourage you from using using the passwords. But at the same time, if that was the case, then they could have just not had the passwords in the first place.

Is that password custom made or a randomly generated one that you're assigned? Because if it's all just random characters, the creators of that game are batshit insane.

Fucking Faxanadu, man. It wouldn't be that bad except that fancy archaic font made it so hard to tell the difference between a c or an e, or q or a g, and so on. I fucked up so many 'mantras' to the point that I would just give up and continue with older ones.

Came here to post this but since the video doesn't feature the "best" parts of this password system:
There is a time limit.
Both the balls and you are very slippery.
It's possible to push the balls out of bounds.
You can get crushed by the balls, in other words YOU CAN FUCKING DIE IN THE PASSWORD SCREEN.

Also pic related is the other obligatory password system for threads like this, the famicom version of Maniac Mansion features passwords that needs you to enter more than 100 characters.

The Super Chinese games' passwords all piss me off. I'm pretty sure all of the games we got in English (Little Ninja Brothers, Ninja Boy, Ninja Boy 2, Super Ninja Boy) all have some ~50 character passwords due to them being action RPGs without batteries for saving.

Snake's Revenge didn't have any vocals on its passwords though and not all the consonants are included either. However, it does have some annoying double exclamation marks that are hard to tell apart from the regular ones if you wrote them down exactly.

>Holy shit, where was the public uproar over that?!
I seriously there was any real public uproar. Most likely Nintendo noticed that people could use profanities for password after the fact and order game companies to make their passwords more PG-friendly.
>Was Kojima or Konami behind this or some lousy staff member from the localization team?
Kojima was not involved in the NES version and the password works in the Famicom version.

I asked this in the previous password thread but here it is again:

Are there any games that have passwords similar to NES Metal Gear's FUCK ME? As in passwords that literally fucks you over and/or makes the game impossible to beat? The only example somewhat similar I can think of is from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves on NES, one of the passwords starts you after the point you get druid's dagger (a weapon you need to beat certain enemy late in the game) but without you having it in your inventory. You get this item in your inventory with all the passwords that start you off later in the game through.

Speaking of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves it's password system is hidden (you need to press A 8 times and B 8 times on title screen to get in the password screen in the first place) and the game doesn't directly give you any of the passwords but they aren't very hard to figure out.

This and pic related drove me up the wall when i was a kid.

Funny thing with Battle of Olympus was that passwords with typos sometimes worked regardless, with the added benefit of having random, sometimes late-game, items in your inventory, e.g. starting the game with the Staff of Fennel or the Salamander Shield or 99 olives.

>people don't understand how programming works
Including you, it looks like. Hell, you could implement a 4-character password system in ASSEMBLY. Given that the passwords generally took you to the beginning of a level, it's not like you'd have to add much to get there.

The long passwords existed to keep people from just guessing blindly and getting to later levels, not because of any programming difficulties.

>> No.2272920

>>2272452
As far as I know most of the long password systems were for games with inventory systems and/or stat growth mechanics. There's no way to represent all the states the game could be in with a four character password. Of course there were a few exceptions where the makers were just being shitters but that's beside the point.
