I would also take Beyond Oasis over either Secret of Mana or Zelda any day.

How many jrpgs had you played before it? That seems to be a pretty big factor in people's reactions to it. It's a decent game, but rather generic. It seems that people who played it early on in their RPG playing careers have a real affection for it. While others who had been into the genre for a while before that found it rote and uninspired.

Both are perfectly valid I think and it seems to be the case with a lot of RPGs of the era. PS1 was a very RPG heavy system and there are many people who got their first real taste of the genre on it. There are people around here who truly think Legend of Legia was outstanding, because they got to it at just the right time in their lives.

Agreed, it's a really good game in an arcade style. The Genesis version isn't very good, but the Saturn version shows how much of a difference atmosphere really makes.

It remind me of Donkey Kong Country.

8 Eyes has become one of my new favorites and while it might not get a ton of hate its still glossed over.

I don't know, it just has a sense of exploration and all the levels have this exotic feel to them, it just sticks with me. Plus its about fighting dudes after the nuclear apocalypse.

Just a unique game that probably could've used a little extra polish.

I never get why people give bog-standard JRPGs so much shit.

Like Breath of Fire 1 for example. Or Earthbound (for being a 'Dragon Quest clone. Like that's a bad thing)

Simon's Quest is so vastly superior to the format of 1 and 3 and it gets knocked so hard. Some 'best of' video list I was watching a few months ago said something along the lines of Castlevania 2 not even qualifying for the list since it was so bad...How the Fuck?! It's as comfortable to play as 1 and 3 as far as side-scrolling, jump/whip mechanics and so on, instantly better than 1 and 3 due to the fact that you can go back to previous screens (not a claustrophobic side-scroller)...once you add in the special whips and whip upgrades, special weapons/items with more than just damaging abilities (garlic to summon, diamond to call tornado...) and the body parts which serve purposes (the rib for example) it becomes harder to argue that 1 and 3 had anything on 2. Also, 3 is tough on my eyes; they wanted to make it look better and more full but it was just way over-textured.

FFVIII is my favorite, maybe not the best. The junctioning system is spectacular and the low-level technique is fantastic..that wouldn't have been an option in 7 or 9. The soundtrack was great for its time being live (I think that was the first of the FF games to have a live instrumentation/organic soundtrack, could be wrong). It has my favorite story and all of the theories that go along with the story only make the game a bit more cryptic and a lot more fun to play, a first in my opinion, 7 and 9 fan fiction/theories were really loose and disconnected.
