Get in here and discuss Sega at its peak

it was ok

And its peak was sub-par, how sad.

didnt the genny outsold the snes in the US in 93 or something?

Genesis had some great games, though. The Genesis was a good system and its library is a nice complement to the SNES's in my opinion.

Gen 4 was the best.
There was no clear winner.

Anyone that says there was clearly didn't own both consoles and utilize them to their full extent

It's funny, when I was a kid there was no bitching about which one was better. Everyone just liked video games, it didn't matter which console. If a friend had a Genesis, I was stoked because I had a SNES, so I got to play something different.

I feel like Genesis had the best 2P games. We played a ton of Gunstar Heroes, Streets of Rage, Road Rash 2, Toe Jam & Earl, and Sonic 2. We used to just play that casino stage in Sonic over and over again. Good times.

>> No.2265342

>>2265330
Yeah those were the best times.
I had a genesis and all my friends that didn't came over and played streets of Rage, mortal kombat, golden axe, sonic, etc.
I remember holding tournaments for the sonic 3 multiplayer.

Likewise those of us that didn't have Ames were always eager to play Mario world, DKC, and even group play one of the consoles great RPGs

>> No.2265353

So what's the GOAT genesis list?
Let's try to keep it to games that have stood the test of time and are still objectively good or better.
>Sonic trilogy
>Golden Axe Trilogy
>Streets of Rage trilogy
>shinobi trilogy
>phantasy Star 2-4
>Ristar
>Vectorman 1-2
>Altered Beast?
>Castlevania: Bloodlines
>Mega Man: The Wily Wars

>objectively good

That's a solid list, though you're missing Rocket Knight.

>> No.2265358

I'm still convinced the genesis was the better system. And I owned both of them.
Ristar is still fucking fantastic for instance.

The SNES of course has its gems but some of them are a bit overrated. SMW, CV4, and ALTTP were essentially casualized versions of their predecessors with fancy graphics.

Fuck yes.
Got this on a reproduction cartridge a few years ago. Best Mega Man and I'm surprised I don't hear about it more. It's essentially the Super Mario all stars of Megaman.

>SMW, CV4, and ALTTP were essentially casualized versions of their predecessors
Not really.

It's not as if SMB3 was difficult to begin with. ALTTP was different (and easier) than the first two games, but it was also more complex.

I sort of agree on Super Castlevania IV.

Sega guy my whole life who just played CV4 last month for the first time. I fucking loved it. Easily top 3 Castlevania game and way better than Bloodlines which I played directly after.

>> No.2265395

>>2265330
You didn't ever see people fighting about which was better? That surprises me considering how much Sega encouraged it with their advertising.

>> No.2265397

>>2265362
SMW was pretty fucking easy. Once you got yoshi it was pretty impossible to lose and the game handed out lives like candy.

ALTTP I don't consider "easy" but it's much more streamlined than its predecessors which were more actual adventure games. ALTTP is literally GO HERE, NOW HERE, NOW HERE, NOW HERE.

>I agree with you on CV4
That's good cause it's the worst offender of the bunch

I realize I sound like a Sega shill right now but I actually prefer the SNES, it's just I often find the games the Ames gets credit for are overrated games people hold up due to nostalgia when their predecessors were better.

>> No.2265401

>>2265367
Funny. I'm the other way around.
I played CV4 all my life and finally played bloodlines a month or so ago and thought it was far more true to classic castkevania and much better.

I respect your opinion tho.

I prefer ALTTP to its predecessors and consider it the best game of the series. It has nothing to do with nostalgia.

>why does nobody talk about the wily wars
4 reasons

1. It was never released via cartridge in NA. So a lot of people don't even know how good it is.

2. The PAL version, like many PAL mega drive games, is not properly optimized for 50hz. Therefore the game suffers from considerable slowdown.

3. The only way to fix this is to purchase a third party variant of the game for genesis optimized for 60hz. Strangely, these unofficial versions run perfectly on NA genesis' and have next to no slowdown. It almost seems like the game was originally developed for NA then ported at the last second.

4. Nintendo fans will never admit that Sega has a better version of mega man 2.

If played on a NA genesis, it's the definitive versions of MM1,2,and 3. That's a fact. But it's pretty obscure to get for NA and its not cheap either. Just checked eBay and most are going for $50-$200

Wait, this game plays MM 1-3 in 16 bit?
Is the music remastered as well?

>> No.2265414

>>2265401
Probably because I/you was so used to the other version maybe? Idk it was an all new Castlevania experience for me and I loved it. Going back to Bloodlines(which I still like a lot) just seemed bland.

>> No.2265415

>>2265412
Yes.
Like he said, it's the best way to play MM 1-3 but ONLY if you buy an unnoficial reproduction cartridge which can be pricy.

You can also buy a PAL mega drive cartridge and use a game genie, but there will be horrible slowdown
