See, that's the kind of answer I was expecting. Fuck that, that term should be a cornerstone of the show in all western media. It should be mentioned on the back of DVD boxes, on the mainpage of every GCCX site (especially the SA one) so they hammer it in your head. I have no trouble with Kacho being translated as Chief since it's its literal meaning but stuff like ChiefAri looks absolutely forced and ridiculous. Worse than reading "NES" when talking about SPECIFIC Famicom tidbits in Japan.

That's their prerogative when translating. The whole point is to use english words. What should tsundere be? Bitchy? Tsun-tsun? Using the original word is silly, you can hear it spoken, the translation is there for people who don't know the word.

I doubt anyone watching a japanese tv show wouldn't have ever heard the phrase tsundere before and if they are they are certainly in the minority. The biggest problem with SA is that they pander to the minority and over localise as well as only do hardsub releases which is a really poor choice considering every other group for anime or live-action use softsubs and MKV. I know people will start saying "but my ps3" and "I play it on my TV/toaster", SA really should release the subtitles as well so then the viewer can find their own higher quality RAWs (if they are available).

If you know what tsundere means you probably know what that means as well. On the other hand if you don't know what tsundere means, the word would be complete gibberish but with hot and cold you can at least interpret the meaning.

And SA actually panders to the majority, everything is hardsubbed so that even people who don't know how video players work at all can watch the episodes with as little hassle as possible. Either way bringing it up here won't make any difference.

besides, they have no reason to not release the .ass file, not everyone is a baby that needs to have their handheld while playing a simple video file. It's the same thing with the person who translated the first 16 or so episodes of toky encounter and the videos were hard subbed and with a resolution around 300p and when someone even asked on his tumblr to release the subtitle files, he wouldn't. This does nothing but limit users to inferior quality video.

This is how I and many other people got introduced to GnT when the threads were still on /v/ and I wouldn't want to have it any other way.
This is just as important as GCCX for many people on here and we shouldn't censor that.

I dunno if I agree on terms like tsundere. I know it because I spend a lot of time on an italian log-rolling forum, but I don't expect my mom to understand me if I tell her that someone is 'a real tsundere' nor do I really expect the average westerner to say it in normal conversation, either then or ever again. In a way, I think calling it 'hot-or-cold' doesn't quite get it, but to be fair I couldn't hope to describe it any better in a single bite-sized phrase.

I have no opinion on soft vs. hard. I agree that allowing viewer flexibility is nice, but I don't really know anything about how subs work on videos so I like that I can just download and watch, no fiddling required.

Tsundere just doesn't have a direct translation; it's not even a real word in Japanese but a portmanteau of two slang words. Consequently it's going to be difficult to get across. I've seen other sites use hot and cold, like Tvtropes. I think it's better to translate instead of keeping a word that hasn't entered widespread usage. Otherwise we start getting into situations like "Just as keikaku".

Hopefully next translation is space hunter! They stop like 5 minutes in and they talk and then basically restart the episode. After hearing so much nip speak (and connecting words said multiple times with subs) it sounds like not enough "location scouting" was done on the game and thus they have Arino go do something else for a while while they go through the game some more then he would come back.

My least favorite things are stuff like in the Gegege on Kitaro episode where they translate "Shisa" as "lion-dog", even though a Shisa is a specific type of monster. Translating "Geta" is a little less bad, but non-Japanese people still call "wooden Japanese-style sandals" "Geta."

It's just weird-ass blowback against years of "o-Baka-chan-tachi," but it's a very Something Awful thing to hand-wring over something being "inappropriately Japanese."

The go-to argument is always "it's about localization, not translation" though,

Using original language words in a translated work is a bizarre practice specific to anime fans in the West. No professional translation would ever do this. Can you imagine that happening in a live action movie, or any other medium? Totally strange that some fans insist on this stuff. If you want to enjoy a work in the original language, you are free to do so.

Are you actually aware what professional translation means? In television and movies, it means subtitles must be short and simple enough to be read fast enough by even the most retarded people because they have such a huge variance in audience (and since amerikkans aren't used to subtitles, they might get even worse treatment than countries that subtitle everything by default (eg. Nordic countries)). This means they cut 100% of even slightly irrelevant information and overlocalize the living fuck out of everything in order to avoid getting complaint letters from dumb viewers.
Fansubs are made by fans for the fans, which should mean they work for an audience that already has a pretty good knowledge of the subject in general. Trying act "professional" is one the worst things that has happened in fansubbing history (not that it's already half-dead thanks to CR/HS).
I thought the "troll groups" like coalguys, gg and Commie (of today) were shitting around on purpose, but sometimes things like related picture comes to light and it really makes me wonder what the fuck were they thinking (and no, unlike Steins;Gate with legit 2ch/Futaba/whatever references, Mawaru Penguin Drum had nothing to do with image board "culture", especially that specific scene/line).

I have helped translate several Spanish language films for the Cinemageddon tracker. Despite being fan translations, never has anyone said "oh, we should keep this word in Spanish". Like I said, it's a totally bizarre thing unique to English speaking anime fans who don't actually speak Japanese yet somehow have this notion that certain words are just too special to translate and the original language is sanctified for strange reasons.

Again, if you like Japanese so much, learn it yourself. It's a much more productive use of your time than complaining.

Japanese has a few terms that really don't translate well into English. Tsundere is one of them, you could probably approximate it to something in the early 90s, but these days animu culture has warped it so hard that it's basically just a girl who acts like she fucking hates you but really loves you. It's too unrealistic.

This part is wrong.

Professional subtitle translations seen on TV, for example, are often short and concise not because of "fear of complaints from dumb viewers" but because the translators are paid by the word or character. I've seen on more than one occasion professionals complaining how they often have to work twice to earn half as much.

I can't remember if it was on this thread or some other forum, but a while ago someone linked to a Mecha Mecha Iketeru episode where Arino was some kind of a judge for a prank on AKB48.

It was about their front person having a love affair and the group getting dissolved because of that.
Just tried watching it and the second file I got from there didn't download correctly and stops after about 10 minutes.

The new episode was really good. Some highlights:

- Since it`s "The Mysterious Murasame Castle", he had to solve riddles to get help. I kind of miss when they did stuff like this.

- During the toy store visit Arino and Takahashi once again draw for pictures of AKB48 members. Takahashi gets his beloved Yuko "Baby Squirrel" Oshima on his first try. Arino once again immediately puts it in his mouth, making Takahashi yell "That's the second time!"

- Arino yanks Inoue's pants off, which gets him a stern glare from Kan

The big announcement about Season 19 is asking Arino what he'd like to do for the next season, he reflects on challenging D, and says he'd like to challenge games on newer systems. As such, from Season 19, games on the PS1, Saturn and 3DO are 'unlocked', meaning we'll be seeing more challenges using them.

The episodes on the DVD are subbed by SA (zari-gani, to be exact). Furthermore, Diskotek (the company that sells the Retro Game Master DVD) has nothing to do with Gawker.

There's a difference between the "Kotaku episodes" and the DVD, even though they share the same name.

You probably won't find the old SA versions of the few episodes they had subbed beforehand, and it's not worth scouring the net for those particular releases (I think it was only two or three episodes anyway), you might as well go for the DVD and get the segments separately.

Well, I personally was annoyed because of the picture that accompanied the post in the SA thread, which I intentionally omitted so that others wouldn't think what I thought.

Coming into it expecting to see the Kirby Super Star Live special and getting a 20 minute segment compilation kind of annoyed me. You're right, it's more Arino, which never is bad, but it's still kind of a bait-and-switch.

It's kind of like "hey, they finally subbed that episode you want oh wait never mind it's not that".

I suppose a massive episode like that would explain the lack of episodes for months, and the supposed excitement to come... I guess the main factors are whether a good quality recording exists, and whether someone at SA wanted to tackle it.

It would be great if it was that, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I'm expecting a batch of three or four episodes to come out all in the same week, like a lot of 2014's releases were.

The last time VR subbing effort got off the ground simply because a couple of people decided to actually do something instead of bitch and moan about the multi-layered meanings of the term tsundere and why that's the reason SA subs suck. Just report the shitposts and move on.

My knowledge of japanese consists mainly of phrases I learned from GCCX. But I work in field where I proofread and edit a lot of texts daily so I'll be willing to help with that part if someone produces a script.

Furthermore, I can't sub nor translate. I did a lot of work proofreading back during VRGCCX, and I'm usually the one posting the updates from the SA thread when people ask for them or when a new episode gets released. I do what I can, believe me.

Not the guy you're responding to but a lot of the posts about the subject tend to be someone trying really hard to incite a subbing war of some kind between 4chan and SA as if it was a contest between internet communities. The whole "us vs. them" -mentality is the dumbest shit ever, and doubly so since nobody on SA gives a single fuck about any of this.

All of this is irrelevant anyway unless someone here can prove they're a legitimately good translator that can do work on par with the sub quality we have right now, which has largely been top notch regardless of what one or two shitposters say. Personally I have zero interest in supporting anything if it means getting crappier translations than what we're used to and between "faster" and "better" I'm always going to go for the latter.

A work doesn't have to be particularly complex for it to receive a poor translation, just look at any horribly translated crappy anime or manga.

Also a year or two from now it's going to be completely irrelevant how fast the episode I'm watching was translated, just like it's irrelevant for all the episodes we've gotten until now. However a lower-quality translation is forever going to be a lower-quality translation so there are no upsides in compromising quality for speed in the long run.

Putting aside the regular reminder that the people doing it have jobs/families/friends/other commitments, you’d be surprised what translating speech without a script can take. Sometimes I can be moving at a good pace, doing 10 minutes of the show in 20-30 minutes, then someone mumbles or uses a word/phrase I’m not familiar with, then its listen-research-repeat for an hour or so. Or a throwback to an old episode, so I have to ask for the script from that episode, assuming it’s been translated done. It comes down to having pride in your work. If I’m going to take the time to do something, I’m going to do it right.

Not exactly. The guy in that video is Patrick Harlan. He actually knows Japanese and works in Japan. He narrated the first dubbed versions of the couple episodes they were shopping around when they were first trying to sell it as Retro Game Master.

The dubs we got on Kotaku and the English track of the DVD were narrated poorly and cheaply by Adam Ray, but it wasn't completely his fault. You can still just set the DVD back to Kan's narration and never have to hear the English outside of the menu screen.

I found them. I think it was just the ones with [SJ] under translation on the pastebin list. It was The Mystery of Atlantis and Ghosts'n Goblins.

The Mystery of Atlantis was also one of the Kotaku and DVD episodes. Those are all in the products list.

Hey all, new to watching the series and have seen a lot of discrepancy about which subs are the best apparently. Anyone mind filling me in on which are the best and where I can stream or download them?

I've seen a few episodes and checked the translators, they're all tv-nihon. I've heard they aren't the best but I'd really like to know what you guys think. Is it ruining my experience?

TV-Nihon subs are terrible, everything else is good. GCCX is an entertaining enough show that it even those guy don't manage to outright ruin the episodes though.
