no joke. JA1 was amazing in its day, 2 was even better. both are still highly playable. shit, even deadly games was pretty good and that came out in between, although it was considerably different from the other entries in the series. quality went downhill after JA2, but the future entries were still decent.

i still find it strange they came out with a browser based online jagged alliance though. that one sucked for sure.

Don't even remind me, i was in the beta (which was no hard feat, they threw out so many keys that regging with a throwaway email six month after it started got you instant access), was kinda-sorta fun for old players but turned to insta-shit after a few "balance" patches, not to mention the cash shop with outrageous prices at release.

I absolutely disagree. Back in Action was bad, and it wasn't down to the fact that it wasn't TBS anymore, it was absolutely soulless. That recent (i think Kickstarted) JA2 reboot, while at least a TBS, was awful as well.

I know what you mean. And I've owned the game since around the time it came out.

In my opinion, Secret of Mana has one of the best soundtracks out of any SNES games. And the art design and atmosphere was fantastic. It creates a mood like no other.

But the combat was ass. It doesn't flow. Charging weapons during combat was a chore. Every once in a while I find myself wanting to play the game, but as soon as combat begins I turn it off shortly afterwards. I want to really like the game. But I can't.

Totally fucking agree. This game is so bland and convuluted and unoriginal. I would actually suggest secret of evermore if your looking to scratch th itch that SoM never delivered. Its a really well executed game and while the alchemy system is pretty broken the game holds a lot of appeal. Where SoM tries to be edgy and bruding while it's atmosphere is uncharacteristically bright and cheerful, SoE tries to be bright and cheerful while its atmosphere is dark and brooding. Which, imo is a much more interesting dynamic.

When it all comes down to it they're majorly the same, as Squeenix tried to be as ridgly-opposed to fixing much as possible. The more striking textual errors are fixed, but they aren't a ton and it wasn't a full retranslation or anything. There's also an easy mode that you won't ever want.

In this sort of case I'd really just say emulate because it's pretty much the same game, if only so you don't need to deal with Steam/whatever Square did to it. There's a bugfix patch for the spirit bug available.
