After hearing some tracks from various soundtracks and hearing good things about the series, I decided that I should try them.

Any advice to begin those games?
Best game? Best episode to begin with? Any things to avoid?

Well you can get Chronicles on Steam which is a really good port of 1 and 2 and a fantastic starting point. They also have Felghana and Origins which aren't retro but great games all the same

TG-16 CD version of Ys 1 and 2 is highly recommended. Probably the best port of both games that exists on retro consoles before the remakes. For Ys 3 I suggest the Genesis version over the TG-16 CD version because the former doesn't suffer from the scrolling issues of the latter. Avoid the SNES version, it's shit.

Of the two Ys IV games, Dawn of Ys on TG-16 CD is best. There's an english fanslation patch available and even a fan dub if you want to understand the voiced scenes (no subs). Don't bother with Mask of the Sun, it's bare-bones and rushed.

Felghana is a remake of III just as Chronicles is a remake of I&II.

Felghana is more like a complete re imagining. Ys 3 original was a loooooooooot different. Outside the basic story there's nothing in common

Definitely check out Ys III's TGCD soundtrack though, the Genesis version has some extremely well done tracks but I personally love the redbook stuff as well.

Ys III for SNES is the hardest game I have ever played. I have beaten games like Battletoads and Ghosts 'n Goblins but Ys 3 is really on a whole different level.

Well I'll try the first two games to begin with, and will follow if I like them.
Will probably try chronicles on psp since I'm more on the go than on my computer.
If I like the series, will definitely try the TG 16 versions.

Thank you all btw

This image is outdated.

Ys V is translated and it's... okay I guess.

As an Ys game it blows, it's slow, it's clunky and it's easy. But as a generic SNES RPG it's enjoyable, reminds me of Quintet's Soul Blazer trilogy.

Also, the music might not be up to Ys standards but it's pretty damn good.

On the other hand, there's a lot of things that were carried over to Napishtim and its sequels, albeit done better.
>>2260206
Funny thing is, he's not that difficult in the PC-Engine version. The remakes jacked up the difficulty on bosses that were clearly not designed for variable difficulty levels, to appease Nightmarefags. The situation was a better in Ys 2 since the fireball makes things more interesting and because they redesigned most bosses from the ground up.

4:3, vsync on, windowed mode at a reasonable resolution(the assets were made in 1024x768). If you're above 60Hz switch to fullscreen for the final boss otherwise the game will run too fast(except for the player) and movement in other than a single direction will be slowed down(wtf xseed??).
Don't use any gamepads. Play on hard.

Worse than Napishtim? Hard to believe.

>> No.2262682

>>2262103

Ark of Napishtim had a very predictable timing mechanic to button presses. It made attacks and jumps easy and fluid.

Felghana ultimately boiled down to mashing as fast as I could, especially with the whole EX meter thing. It was greatly improved in Origin though.

>in my opinion:

If you for one second think that Wanderers from Ys had a better story, characters or dialogue than Oath in Felghana, then you never liked the premise of Wanderers to begin with and the original story being less developed helped you ignore it.

Felghana develops it and while it may still be a fairly generic JRPG story, characters now have actual motivation and the story isn't just "go and beat the bad monster" anymore. Wanderers had a really weak plot, the remake respected what Wanderers had and at least attempted to make it a bit compelling.

>3. the worst gameplay out of all of the 3D Ys games
Not when Napishtim exists. And Napishtim is my favorite of the 3D Ys, but I'm not blinded enough to claim it isn't the weakest gameplay wise.

Even so, the "worst gameplay out of all the 3D Ys games" is still miles ahead from Wanderers of Ys. While I can't speak for the original PC versions, the Genesis gameplay was mediocre at best, the other ports had awful controls. Pre-Kefin, it was the black sheep of the Ys series for a reason. And even then I'd say Kefin is better, if more generic.

>> No.2262896

>>2262865
The PC-88 version of Wanderers from Ys was popular on the grounds of showing the system could perform something resembling parallax layer movement, not because it played as well as its predecessors. At least the music was good.

>> No.2263357

>>2262682
I don't think that dash jumping and all the related platforming that came with it was easy and fluid by the slightest. On the other hand, the platforming and exploring was really toned down to nothing in the successive games made in the same fashion.
