HUGE fan of SNK. Probably my all-time fave dev. KoF, SamSho, Metal Slug, and Fatal Fury are all among my favorite series, along with MotM and Big Bang Pro Wrestling. They made some other great underrated games as well like Crystalis, Baseball Stars, Last Blade, and League Bowling.

I just got the SNK Classics Collection for ps2. It's awesome but i wish they would have made 2 titles unlockable(just remove one from the line up and make it locked). Also the challenges aren't that hard and its too easy to unlock World Heroes.

About 100 for the board, 70 for the multi cart, 10 for a jamma harness and what ended up being about 70-100 dollars for case/wires/fittings (but you could do that for much cheaper. Also a controller will run you 50-100 depending on type/condition or you could get a cable and wire up something you already have (I bought a psx converter for 25) probably much cheaper in the states. Biggest decision is which main board I went with a mfz1 which had it's own problems such as because I wanted to only use 5v I had to totally reroute the sound. Some boards don't have socketed BIOS so putting a uni bios in is a big hassle. I would like to eventually put in a unibios and composite/a video but that'll cost me another 110 for both chips.

Bit of an unpopular opinion, but I like '95 the most out of all the KoF games. The mega-damage allows for great comebacks, and it's the best realization of the original concept of KoF: a cool AoF/FF crossover with its own universe. It also just has the best "90's arcade game vibe," I think.

No match for '98's all-around perfection. I don't know of another game with a better mix of footsies, fundamentals and damaging combos. Seriously, it hits a perfect sweet spot between ST's all-out mind games and the all-out combos of later KoF and newer fighting games in general.

I loved 90s SNK for not being a bunch of racists like their rival Capcom was. That character right there is a first Ainu video game character in history! A lot of Japanese people in that era didn't care much for the Ainu. SNK didn't mind allowing their flagship characters to spotlight countries that were other than USA and Japan. In KoF 95 I'm pretty sure that AoF team was the team Mexico, FF team was Italy. I don't know about you all, but if I were a Brazilian, I'd much more prefer to have Ikari Warriors as my guys over some green ape that discharges electricity.

Rage of the Dragons could have been a million seller in my eyes if they spent just a little more effort for it to iron out the infinitely looping combos and added more animations to it.

>>2255935
Neo Geo had some fantastic sports and puzzle games.
Windjammers, Super Dodge Ball,
Bust-A-Move, Magical Drop, Neo Bomber Man,
The Ultimate 11, and Baseball Stars.
Baseball Stars I prefer to play the NES port, actually, because of the create-a-player mode. The first Baseball Start Professional has better camera, and Baseball Stars 2 has better control and graphics.

There are also a fair bit of side scrollers if you're into those, like Spin Masters, Magician Lord, Super Top Hunter, Twinkle Star Sprites, Zupapa, Eight Man, Shock Troopers, and of course the Metal Slug games.

I know guys who are really into fighting game tournament scene, and apparently they approve highly of the Metrimelee. It's a little goofy in my opinion.

>> No.2256596

>>2256526
Matrimelee is extremely weird, but a lot of fun. Make sure you play the JP version, the overseas setup removed a lot of the speech and the great music.

The gameplay is mostly cat and mouse, since everyone can dash, double jump. air throw, and do a safety roll (which is free and fully invincible). Counter hits do 50% extra damage, and if you nick someone during a dash attack you get a Double Counter which does double damage.

There was a meh PS2 port which introduced some old Power Instinct game elements (the wrestling girl, transformations), but removed the little helpers you could smack around, so it was less fun.

If you like it, go straight for the Taito Type X version. It has a different combo system, more new characters (two more grannies...), and some extra cutscenes. More of the same really, but with a lot of extra spice.

There was also a Nesica X Live port which actually updated the balance after 10 years, but I dunno if there is a way to play it on PC (the regular Type X can be played with a loader).

Nazca was bought out by SNK and continued developing games with the same team until old SNK bit the dust.(Metal Slug 2, X and 3) Neo Turf Masters is an SNK IP, although not a whole lot else was done with it apart from a NGPC installment.

It's definitely one of the most mysterious old companies that was out there. Only like 2 members of their staff are known by their real names, and are very secretive about the others which were all credited under pseudonyms.

They also allegedly developed a bunch of games under Irem like In the Hunt and Geostorm before Irem gave up on the arcade market, which is when they founded Nazca.

>The game's sequel, tentatively titled Garou: Mark of the Wolves 2, was reported to be in the works on the Neo Geo system several times by Korean news sources. Since 2002, the project has been put on hold and its current status remains unknown. According to Falcoon at the 2005 KOF Party, the game's sequel was around 70% percent complete by the old SNK team. That, World Heroes Pocket, a QUALITY Metal Slug 4, King of Fighters R-3, and a QUALITY King of Fighters 2001 were all casualties of SNK's bankruptcy. There are also rumors that Last Blade 3 was planned at some point.

Garou 2 was the biggest loss. The original had so much potential, but as it stands it's little more than the poor man's 3rd Strike. I honestly think that with some fine tuning and a larger roster it could have been better than Street Fighter.

>>2258060

The Just Defend is as simple as blocking right before somebody attacks you. Naturally it's much easier said than done, but if you do it successfully you get a tiny bit of life back and frame advantage. It's like a no-risk parry. The window is smaller but if you screw it up, you just block instead.

Otherwise it plays pretty straightforward but if you want to get into advanced moves look up how to break/cancel out of specials. Each character has different special moves that can be shortened this way and cancelled into supers.

4 is about a mad professor using some tech virus and building an army of robots and cyborgs, including ones of the rebel army leaders (Morden and "you are mince meat" Allen).

5 has some smugglers in the rain forests stealing the blueprints of the Metal Slug tank, and building their own version - you can fight it as a hidden enemy on level 1. Then you have some cultists summoning a demon and taking command of the smuggler group. Unfortunately, the game was only half finished when they released it, it had a lot of cool shit not put in the game.

6 was about another, more horrible group of aliens attacking, so you team up with the rebel army and the martians against them.

Those are all the ones I remember.

During the earlier years of it's life you could find them in stores, but the later games(~1996+) were pretty much mail order only. I don't think they manufactured any AES systems after that period, since the same thing happened with the MVS cabinets which were only manufactured until '96-'97.

Certain US AES releases like The King of Fighters 2000 had a ton of controversy surrounding them, since a seller(NeoGeoFreak) bought the entire US print run, replaced the official inserts and manuals with their own and then sold them at a markup. SNK Playmore eventually got them raided and sued, although I'm not sure what result it had.

If so, definitely check out Sengoku 3, one of the best beat-em-ups on the Neo Geo. You might also want to check out some of the different genres with Neo Turf Masters for golf, Pulstar and Blazing Star for shoot-em-ups, and Windjammers for advanced pong,

All Neo Geo MVS carts work on an MVS system apart from the Neo Geo Print cartridges. It will work fine on any Neo Geo model. JAMMA is a connection standard the board itself(not the cartridge) uses a variant of to connect to the cabinet.

"JAMMA" refers to the 56-pin harness that connects a game board to the cabinet.

"Neo-Geo" is a type of game board, by SNK, which accepts Neo-Geo MVS cartridges.

If you have an MVS motherboard in the cabinet, then a Neo-Geo cartridge is what you want. If there's no board in there, then you need the cartridge and a Neo-Geo MVS motherboard. Cheap ones are around $100.

The Italy and Mexico thing was in KoF94 - after that game they dropped the nationality theme for teams.
There's also the fact that the characters in those teams weren't necessarily residents of those countries, since they're based on South Town USA.
Still, that freed up the USA slot for Heavy D! (pretty cool design for a fairly standard character type, the black boxer) and his team, and it allowed them to introduce a new protagonist through the Japan team - again, because their modern day FG protagonists back then were americans.

Then the police commissioner Howard takes him down.

Years later, the boys push Howard off the roof, and one of them, still single, takes his son with him around the world, for all we know with no fixed address, and Terry himself can't seem to get or hold a proper job.

I just don't fancy the HD combo system since I'm not much of a combo guy, but you can use the same bar to cancel specials, so at least there's that.

this sort of drop 2002UM from my list, to the rest is a tie between Garou and 98UM.

I recall it got emulated pretty fast, and so did 2001 - I saw an animated GIF based on a 2k1 animation on a Mugen site a while before I got a proper look at the game itself, which was sort of depressing.

Fucked up part about all of that? Gesse would probably set Terry up like that.

The more I was getting into is that Terry is a regular guy after the "fight". Yeah there's the Gesse/revenge thing but Terry isn't screwed up like the Mishimas, no inner struggle like Ryu, no mystical bull like Kyo. Just guy who is damn good at what he does and will chill with you with a bottle.

AoF was incredibly innovative for the genre in terms of mechanics and balancing the depiction of plot considering it had to be both an arcade and console game.

The flow of gameplay, however, wasn't quite as sharp as SNK's later attempts - but it was an important step to get there.

Never as mame developers think, not using the gpu and only use cpu raw power to have accurate emulation.
I read from haze that in order to have a cpu
strong enough to have the raw power for accurate hyper 64 you need a 20ghz core.

>> No.2266442

I was in our local arcade when guys came in with pipes and started swinging at each other. They were pretty bad at it. No style whatsoever, just trying to take poor potshots rather than a standup fight. I just kept playing my game, so long as they stayed away from me.

Another time, it almost came to blows between my friend and some other guy due to him trying to reserve several games in a row despite a bunch of us waiting to play it too. He eventually backed down, but talking with the staff/owner, he said they guy was usually alright, but he was with his GF, soooo... lol can't back down!!

Those were the days....

There was a time throwing was considered "cheap". Unfortunately, there were some players/characters so good at turtling that throwing their ass out of the corner was the only way. This was also back in the early days before overhead attacks and other things to discourage crouching block.

Infinite combos are also considered cheap. I did it once in MK with Raiden because I had never done it before (just read about it). I laughed at how ridiculous it was, but I felt bad and gave the guy the next round.

Yeah. If you hit an artery/vein or an organ, yeah. You can EASILY die from a single stab and without medical attention definitely will.

>> No.2266660

>>2266649
If you hit an artery it's very easy to exsaguinate all over the place. Stab wounds can be very nasty. When I worked at a pub, a bar back was helping to throw two fighting guys out and they stabbed him in the neck with a fork. He lost a couple pints of blood, but said it didn't hurt much. Looked like a horror show, though, one guy got sick all on himself so there was vomit and blood in the entryway.

SNK was REALLY innovative in general, but Capcom's Street Fighter just couldn't be topped when it came to polish, so they were always stuck being "the other fighting game dev".

Most probably the same dev team, working the same idea in 2 games. Interesting how this would become a staple of the fighting genre.

What else did the FF AoF series introduced to the genre? If I recall, damage over time was present in the AoF series, and Geese in FF1 was the first boss with SNK Syndrome.

It's one of the most insane infighting, scamming, backstabbing groups of people ever, who barely play games but would rather nitpick about the smallest anal retentive bullshit for years and years. That would all be bad enough but then there's the fact that NeoGeo is hands down the most expensive system to collect so they feel that their insanity is justified somehow.

well, MVS collecting isn't nearly that bad, especially if you just want to play games on real HW (most MVS games aren't terribly expensive)

but anything related to the AES is a hilarious nightmare and there's pretty much no reason to get into it
buddy of mine sold a bunch of his AES stuff because he was going to college and wasn't really playing it
he wants to get some of it back, but can't be arsed to deal with the scene
and he has a CMVS anyway, so it's easier to just get MVS games and bypass the majority of fuckery
