2245917 No.2245917 [Reply] [Original]

A tri-ace thread to mourn their passing. Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean, Star Ocean 2 and Star Ocean: Blue Sphere apply.

I feel like replaying Valkyrie Profile. What's my best option these days? I've got a physical copy of Lenneth but I'm not a fan of CG cutscenes and I'd prefer not to have the English dub. So, is there an undub of the PS version?

One day I hope Gotanda and the other Telenet/tri-Ace ex-pats can nab the rights for a Hioden remake/sequel.

I know there's an undub of the Star Ocean games to some degree.

>> No.2246054

Damn it, I loved the hell out of the Star Ocean games. Things were amazing.

>> No.2246084

I tried playing the first Star Ocean awhile back and there was a bug where the music would mess up and then after awhile the game would crash. Is there a way to fix this? I made it awhile despite the crashing, just had a backtrack to previous saves a few times, but it was more than a little frustrating.

>> No.2246105

>>2245917
Nope. Only the PSP version has undub.
I'm okay with CG cutscenes because VP2 and CotP also use them, so, if you care about consistency, it's the better option.

Didn't Tri-Ace merge with SE at some point? What happened, exactly?

Does that mean that in the eventual point that we get sequels/remakes/ports, they won't have a single person on hand to make sure it doesn't all go to shit?

Oh boy, I fear for the worst when it comes to the future of these titles.

Eh, when it comes to localization of any kind, I'm going by the principle of as little as possible, as much as needed. I guess you mostly consume weebshit yourself when you immediately think of anime, but I just apply the same principle to video games that I use for foreign-language movies and books. I'm not trying to make a statement in your weird culture war with my preference; all I want is limit the cognitive dissonance I'm bound to get with localization the more intrusive it gets.

Plus, I'm not even a native speaker of English. If I have to choose between two languages that I'm not a native speaker of, but one of them is the original language of the medium, I'll always take that one. And why not?

If you understand the original language just go with that. That's fine.

But I prefer my dubs to sound natural in the language they're dubbed into. If that requires taking some liberties with the translation so be it.

This. I can't understand rune particularly great in the first place so English is fine even if the quality of work is less than great.

Besides, bad dubs can be unintentionally hilarious. See: Star Ocean 2.

Tri-Ace needs to come back and revive the turned based RPG genre that Squeenix has been molesting the past few years.

Gonna snag all my Tri-Ace games and give them another playthrough. They deserve that much at least. Those beautiful, talented mother fuckers.

Star Ocean 2 is my favorite RPG of all time. That being said, I don't know what happened to Tri-Ace. Every game I played by them from ps2 onward was either disappointing or complete trash. Did some significant people leave the company, or was it some other situation?

i can start an iso of a regular rip on my psp just fine, but the undub iso is giving me a 80020148 although the psp recognizes the iso just fine and previews the splash pic and the music in the xmb background. running 6.60-2.3 me on a 2004.

I hope SE will let the IPs die quietly. I was in middle school when SO2 and VP were released, it made us fucking crazy (along with Grandia). I'm happy to have those physical copies, those contains so many good memories...

Strangely enough, I enjoyed the twist with the final boss.
The creepy doll-like models, the boring depression after destroying the Earth , the useless crafting, the dumb girl with wings and the overly short story were bullshit, though.

Like Anon said, it's the rare Japanese PC real-time tactics game with puzzle-like dungeon missions to plow through. Both games have the premise of you gaining the ability to revive allies/monsters and control them, making for mission variety. Cool music at least.

i got two ISOs, the mugi undub and another one from one of the emu/rom/iso download site listed in the wiki.

since then, i've been fiddling around with my psp and i noticed that my microSD-to-MS adapter is basically falling apart. i backed up my savestates, formated the thing and when i put the ISOs back that worked 100% before, the psp wouldn't play them. so i assume this may actually be an issue with the SD card adapter. i ordered a new one, which i'll test tomorrow. thanks for your help anyway!

Because you want to see your character evolve and his strongest movesets come early on? I'm not saying it's not an awesome early moveset, but most other characters have really good finishers and late game moves(Dias has a similar problem with a shitty last move as well, though his Illusion is pretty okay, but his strongest move is still his very first Air Slash).

Bowman's greatest strength is that he looks like a chill guy that I would love hanging out with.
