Man Orz were nightmare fuel but at the same time very cool they were a great design

Here we have a galaxy with all sorts of weird aliens that look and act foreign and then here's these aliens who are appropriately WAY more alien since they're not even from our dimension

The weird broken translations and simple ideas were brilliant

>>2243354
Maybe because out of sheer ignorance or indifference at best and willful genocide at worst, what they refer to as parties and happy campers and special sauce are really battles and gore because for whatever reason, they need some race here as happy campers or as some sort of anchor for them to project themselves through into our dimension

This is open to interpretation but I always figured it meant that they used the Androsynth themselves as portals for Orz to enter our dimension physically, which is heavy space, exploding inside out from Androsynth bodies

Which is why the Androsynth went all crazy and at war with each other, to try to stop them from invading and why Orz gets antsy when asked since they think others will react the same way

Also Orz convinced me that the Aroolalay are allies, since they admit that the Aroolalay or however you spell it gets in their way sometimes

We never did find out what was the bigger picture they wanted for Humans

I didn't read any logs saying they had done anything bad... and I still found them spooky (and hilarious, and charming). They clearly have strange powers and a very alien nature, and there are some hints of something dark going on behind at least a few of the things they say, and the things others say about them. They don't seem like they care about or even comprehend the priorities of ordinary physical creatures from our dimension. Yet they act very cheerful and friendly. It's clear that they're dangerous, if only because of their ignorance. But it's very, very hard to tell exactly how, because of the crazy way they talk. They're real aliens. That's what makes them scary.

The Orz is an extradimensional lovecraftian horror that feeds on the very essence of sentience itself. Its prey lose their minds and die screaming in a horrific manner.

And yes, "it" as in singular. What we see as a race of green round fish-like beings are merely projections of this horror's extremities into our reality. Like many *fingers* reaching through to *heavy space* in order to interact with matter in our dimension.

Fortunately for life in the galaxy it's not enough the Orz to find you with its *fingers*. It has to be able to *smell* a sentient species in order to get a hold of them en-masse and pull them *outside* with it to make the *special sauce*. Mind you the *fingers* can still *dance* with *silly cows* in great *parties*, so they're far from harmless.

The Androsynth and later the Supox allowed themselves to be *smelled*. Never ask the Orz about this. It doesn't like *telling stories* about them.

What makes them truly scary is that they are bad translations of an extra-dimensional being. The Arilou are individuals. They each have motivations and understandings and presence. Orz is/are a single thing, squishing through the seams of reality like living jell-o being pressed through cloth. It is unclear what would/could happen if Orz managed to press itself further into our reality. Keep in mind that the normal races must used space-bending field effect devices to travel to hyper-space, and later quasi-space. Orz does it by itself. In hundreds, thousands of instances, and twiddles its green-yellow soccer-ball-shaped fingers so that it can manipulate metal ship things around. Orz vessels and combat suits are merely waldos by which Orz interacts with life and materials in our reality. If it can push its fingers through the fabric of our existance, what happens when it finally manages to tear a rift open? How much of it will flood into our universe? Ship-sized Orz? Planet-sized? Solar-sized? The threat is horrific...

The fact that the Orz is almost child-like in its naivete makes it extra creepy. It doesn't really understand the gravity of the horrible things it does to realspace beings and just wants to have fun. It wants into our dimension because it finds it a nicer place to live (*smooth* and *bright*).

It also doesn't even understand the concept of deception. Everything it tells you is sincere amd truthful, even if you can't understand wtf it means. Deception and subterfuge confuse and anger it (it doesn't like the Syreen much), and since it's incapable of lying it will become hostile instead if you try to pressure it into talking about something it doesn't want to.

No, that whole spiel is the Orz telling you to stop asking about the Androsynth (and being like the Androsynth) or it will have to kill you. It doesn't know how to avoid the subject or lie so it'll murder you instead if you keep pressing the subject.

Apparently whenever it did whatever it does with the Androsynth (and Supox), things didn't go exactly as planned and it doesn't like to think about it. Throughout SC2 the Orz implies that humans are more "compatible" than other species, so take that as you will. It continues this behavior in SC3. SC3's cocking up the lore aside, out of all the races the Orz remains the most true to the previous game.

What.
The Orz is unimaginably ancient by our standards. It's one of "them". The Arilou are the ones running out of time, their own experiments on themselves rendering their species unviable. Wikipedia says:

Released to critical acclaim, Star Control II is widely viewed today as one of the greatest PC games ever made, and has appeared on numerous publications lists of the greatest video games of all time.

Okay, now I REALLY want to play this game...

Is it available on GOG or somewhere else?

Or am I pretty much shit out of luck?

It's maneuverability is too terrible. It can kill the first ship it fights easily, everything else becomes a major challenge.

All ships are extraordinarily balanced, they are worth exactly as many points as they say.

My top three are shofixti, pkunk, and mmrnmhrn. Mmrn can fucking destroy anything except pkunk and slylandro.

Takes two to take out a chmmr because the shields are too good.

You'd think this would attract all of the skepticism and contrarian within you but I have to say, except maybe before you upgrade the ship's speed and movement, the game is pretty damn complete

They just had a weird vibe. I mean at first they just seem le cute, silly and lolrandom but then you realize the actual translation of what they are telling you is a dire threat.

What I mean to say is that they look and sound funny and cute but they are quite malignant in their intent upon closer observation.

Fill your ship with double capacity field tanks. Give your self 50 or 60 fuel, or just go outside and hail a melnorme.

Grin and laugh as the Melnorme cussed you out.

More or less, especially if you intend to use the ship in combat. Which isn't an entirely bad idea if you manage to find time and enough Interstar credits you can get a Hellbore Cannon of the Melnorme. Otherwise, I would just get what seems to be enough to get the job done and not much more.
