What's the difference between the V-Saturn and Hi-Saturn from the regular Sega models?

>> No.2231423

Straight from the wikipedia article on the Saturn:
"Two models were released by third parties: Hitachi released a model known as the "Hi-Saturn" (a smaller Saturn model equipped with a car navigation function),[144] while JVC released the "V-Saturn""
Would you like me to show you how to google?

I was asking people who actually had on-hand experience with the thing.

Ok, also found this while googling, from someone with more info on it.

Seriously, I can teach you to google. If I can teach it to the elderly, I can teach it to you.

you sound like a cunt m8.
he's asking retro vidya related questions on a retro board.

>inb4 SOME THREAD DIED BECAUSE OF THIS!@!

If it was any good it wouldnt be 1 post away from being deleted now would it?

>> No.2231686

While I understand the just Google it mentality, some of this board is to just shoot the shit about old videogame stuff, get new perspectives, get and give people a chance to talk about stuff they have experienced and know about firsthand, even if their knowledge or even opinions might not differ much from what's already out there.

Nothing worth worrying yourself over if you just wanna play Saturn games. V-Saturn and Hi-Saturn have mpeg decompression built in which makes fmv scenes look better in some games. They have different startup screens but who cares about that? I think they also play VCDs but who has VCDs?

The Chinese.

I had an SVCD player as a kid (in England). There was a little shop downtown in Coventry that sold a handful of VCDs but rotated them somewhat often.

>>2231694
Most of them would have Chinko subtitles. Kek.

I didnt know they played vcds. Thanks for the info.
A friend of mine purchased form dragon ball discs back in the 90s that turned out to be vcds. Neither one if us, at the time, new how to play them other than PC. They were from Taiwan, I believe.

Don't you have that card that goes into the regular old Saturn to give you MPEG decompression as well?

There's some classic Hong Kong movies that never made it on to anything other than VCD. If Hong Kong movies interest you that is.

How many licensed variations of game consoles were made? I can think of the Sharp Twin Famicom and their TV sets with built-in Nintendo consoles, the JVC WonderMega/X'Eye, all the 3DO consoles (since the 3DO company simply licensed the technology to hardware manufacturers) and that Panasonic Q thing that played DVDs and GameCube discs.

Pioneer Laserdisc. I would love to find one of these at a car boot sale.

Alright.. So what about the Samsung Saturn? I saw an anon had one in here and I became furiously jealous. What makes it special and why do I want it so bad?

It was only released for the Korean market as far as I know. Samsung also produced the Korean versions of the Master System (Gam-boy) and Mega Drive (Super Aladdin Boy).

when i was 13 i ordered a bunch of anime vcds online.

eva and trigun are the ones i remember. i'll never forget opening trigun. i couldn't wait to get home and opened the package in the car on the way home from the post office.

when i got out of the car the box fell off my lap and broke one of the vcds.

then i slowly realized that vcds were just the same as the rips online i could download

slightly different bootup scene, and the hi-saturns had a mpeg card pre-installed.

That, and the plastic colour, are the only differences.

>>2231692
Neither Saturns had mpeg decompression built-in. Hi-saturns were just bundled with an mpeg card. V-Saturns weren't, but JVC sold mpeg cards on their own.

>>2231423
The only Hi-Saturn with car navigation was the Hi-Saturn NAVI, which goes for 2500€ on ebay for a LOOSE UNIT.

It gets weirder because the ad shows Virtua Racing but there's no way of plugging the 32X in without tipping the whole thing over.

Asia sans Japan/Korea (because they didn't have VCRs when the came around) and Nigeria (because they're poor and don't have Internet connections) adore VCDs.

Was there a platform with more official hardware variations than the PC Engine? I don't think even Sega platforms had as many versions.
