Wondering what /vr/ thinks of these things

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RS55pmLIEjA

This youtube video i found recommends the fuck out of this particular one but doesn't talk about lag/stretching or anything. Anyone got some firsthand experience?

I'm thinking of getting one because there's no scart tvs in my country but i've got a small pvm with RGBS and I know how fantastic RGB looks.

They're garbage but cheap.

Lots of lag, poor quality image, no scanlines and you can;t add them either, poor support, etc

What's "lots of lag?"
What's "poor quality",
"can't add them?"

Google.

For 150, you can get something much better in a used dvdo unit. Break the scart out to BNC RGB and sync.
No scan lines, but you can get them through another adapter and an slg.
Not xrgb quality but significantly less money for good quality.

The MVS has a funcy sync like 57 Hz something. That could cause trouble with some scalers so be sure to check that out first.
Can also be incompatible with your display depending on if your scaler converts to 60Hz or not. I'd prefer the latter (not converting) and having a screen that supports odd sync rates because you get disgustingly jittery movement when you try to change it around.
Sometimes this is even noticeable on nominally "60Hz" consoles when you run them through a scaler that converts the sync rate, because they are slightly off causing jitter every few seconds.

The XRGB Mini can toggle between converting and outputting exactly the same rate as on the input btw, so you can get the best of both (non-jittery picture vs. compatibility with more displays).

pros:
works out of the box
has audio out, jack and coax spdif
can output to various resolutions : 800x600, 1024x768, 720p, 1080p ; useful to output to your display native res and avoid panel scaling
works with 50hz sources
input lag is between 1 and 2 frames, tested with 240p suite

cons:
240p content gets treated as 480i so some minor artefacts happens
no scanlines
content gets stretched when using 720p/1080p
no option

honestly, for the price it's great. the thing works also it's great for HDMI capturing.

And if you're really on getting scanline experience, just get a cheap CRT tv, you'll get better looking scanlines, 0 input lag (yes, even micomsoft devices have input lag).

Supposedly the SCART to Component adapters have less lag, just gotta mod them to have extra RCA connectors for audio.

It works wonders to be honest
For $40 all my Sega Saturn, Genesis, and Snes games come out crystal clear on my LCD
Ive noticed no lag or any that affects gameplay and supports true RGB video for any region
I reccomend it

I don't dispute the Framemeister, but isn't the XRGB-3 supposed to be able to do frame-doubling on a per-scanline basis a.k.a. no input lag? (240p input -> 480p VGA output)

Not retro, but I got a component to HDMI box for Wii/Gamecube games and it's decidedly "okay". I have no other way to use them currently, and this is the only way I could find to run them into my monitor. I can't see these working much better, the lower quality the input signal the worse it's going to look converted to HD.

Of course they do because they're just transcoders not upscalers. You still need a display that does 240p.

XRGB 3 has about 2ms lag.

> you'll get better looking scanlines, 0 input lag (yes, even micomsoft devices have input lag).
All false. With a modern TV you have less than a frame of lag with the whole chain of the xrgb, all the external trancoding, sync cleaning, slg, etc, and the TV. So there's absolutely no lag.
The scanlines look amazing as does the picture. You get the added bonus of being able to turn them off an on or the level of them which for some games is nice.

Ya that's probably from the scaler being very poor. It's not knowing what to do with the resolutions so it's either adding or subtracting overscan. You pictures there aren't showing the full screen.

>> No.2231487

I have this thing, its decent if you're trying to get RGB into an HDMI only capture card but for anything else, I'd never use this. The output is good because its still obviously RGB but it's deinterlaced since it interprets 480i instead of 240p and the smoothness of the video suffers as a result. With the lag and stutter combined I really don't recommend it for direct game play, might as well just get an LCD that will support component and get one of those RGB->YUV things.

This thing actually might be better for things that are legitimately video sources like a laserdisc player or a VCR but not a game system. Literally the best thing about this product was that it was on Amazon with prime shipping and that has nothing to do with the product itself.

I do have one TOP TIP for this thing: For a streaming setup where you have a PVM with RGB passthrough, it's very useful if you don't have a capture card with RGB inputs.
