When does this pick up? I'm currently back from my second time on that hill and I'm wondering when the fun begins.

but mother 3 is literally the worst of the serious

I'd say the game picks up after Peaceful Rest Valley. It's a bit of a chore to play until you have a proper healer.

Never OP.
The series are just like that, you either like it or you dont.

Don't force yourself to play games just to fit in. If you don't like it, just play something else. Are you a small kid that you need us to tell you what/how to play?

Why are you reading so deep into a simple inquiry? JRPGs tend to be slow to start and having a tipping point. All I asked was when this one's was.

>>2221006
Just like what? Again, don't read beyond what was asked.

>> No.2221018

The game picks up once the opening sequence is over and you're actually in Onett, and it gets progressively better from there.

maybe when you get more characters and some PSI (magic) to mess around

Mother games get much more interesting when you have more party members.

Also, I don't think the story picks up much compared to 1 or 3.

Mmh, I kinda feel ya, man. I forced myself to play this game to the end once: At first I thought it was just boring as hell, but after a little while, I just couldn't stop playing it until the end.

Always remember that there are many people out ther that likes things you don't like, so don't let others tell you when and how to enjoy things; try it for yourself and make your own opinion of it.
I can't tell you when the fun begins, for that is up to you and you alone to decide, for every one of us has our own opinion on when a game gets interesting.
Just play it until you have all four teammates. If you still do not find it entertaining by then, then this game is simply not for you, simple as that.

Having never played any of the Earthbound games, nor really knowing much about them aside from the almost universal love people have, how would you lot sum them up to make me interested

80's and 90's setting, fun lighthearted jokes and sometimes it can get very weird and uncomfortable. Music is weird but it grows on you and some are really nostalgic like.

It's actually a bit challenging as an rpg, it encourages you to use strategy if you are not a grindwhore. Status effects and buffs are useful unlike in Final Fantasy.
Mother 1 is hard because of bad map design but the story is great
Mother 2 is challengeing due to weird difficult peaks at times. The story is simple but effective and doesn't rely on too much talking. If you played Mother 1 first however, you can make a lot of cool connections
Mother 3 Fixes and makes the gameplay better in some aspects, excellent music, sad sad story. Characters have more personality connections and references to the first two games. Cool plot

I would say it starts to pick up once you get Jeff. Others might say Paula, but by the time you get Jeff I couldn't put the game down.

Here's the thing Earthbound doesn't really have anything to draw you in and make you want to follow the story at the begining. It needs to have a hook to catch your attention, some police investigating some asteroid is boring as shit.

Honestly, I just couldn't get into Mother 3 when I replayed it. I really liked it a few years back when I first played it, but I honestly prefer Mother 1 and 2 overall.

>> No.2221509

As soon as you get Paula the game picks up.

Stick with it.

Mother 3 is kinda shit until people stop moving in and out of your party.

>> No.2222341

>>2220995
I could never really get into Mother 3. Through my first play,I just wanted to play as Lucas and gave no shits about the other characters (which I couldn't until like the fifth damn chapter). Also since I was using an emulator, I speeded through quite a bit of the game. That probably wasn't a good idea, though.

>Status effects and buffs are useful unlike in Final Fantasy.

FF pissed me off by having bosses be immune to nearly every status effect in the games. It's not like I'm ever going to use poison on a normal enemy so what's the fucking point in even having it in the game?

>> No.2222412

>>2221490
At the time it was made the setting itself was interesting enough to want to see more of it and explore shit just for the sake of it. I'd say if you aren't immediately having fun being a kid and walking around town talking with people and getting into battles with the weird enemies and exploring just what kind of situation the game is in the first place, then, maybe it's kind of, not for you.

>> No.2222515

To be honest I only got hooked in this game when I reached Happy Happy Village. I liked the creepy cultist villains and the weirdness in the whole scenario so it made me interested to explore the rest of the game.

In the other hand though my interest died down when I reached that cave maze in the desert nearby to Fourside. Fortunately it re-upped when I finished that drag and started the mission in Four Dept. Store.

>> No.2222542

That's what makes it great though. The other games take forever to get interesting, and Mother 3 draws you in almost immediately.

>> No.2222550

>Post anything about wondering when a JRPG gets interesting

This seems to happen more than it should.

Personally I found it hard to get into as well OP. Mother 3 had a great start and Mother 1 does as well. I don't know why, but Mother 2 just didn't do much for a hook in my experience playing.

For people with the mentality of a teenage girl, maybe. Other people find its cheap melodrama grating. It really is a Tumblr game.

I can't get myself to play EarthBound for too long but I played through Mother 3 like it was nothing.

Bosses are immune or almost immune to statuses in most RPGs. However FF's defense spells are pretty useless and you can't Slow later bosses, so the only way to deal with tougher bosses is to grind. That's pretty lame.

>> No.2222997

>>2221026
Agreed with this.

Playing single-character JRPGs is not fun when you have to constantly swap between offense and healing, and it generally takes very little strategy while greatly lengthening the time each battle takes. Also, DW/DQ was a huge chore for me due to the same reason.

>> No.2223021

>>2222385
I noticed this is common in many RPGs. Over 90% of all spells are useless.
