I saw the PS1 port on sale a few months ago, but I don't have a guncon so I didn't buy it. I guess it wouldn't be that great using the d-pad. There's still a place with the cabinet near to me though so I don't mind.

My favorites are usually fairly gimmicky stuff. Police 911 for the full-body gameplay, Silent Scope for the fancy lightgun with a scope and everything, Arctic Thunder for the fun Hydro Thunder gameplay, but with a fan blowing wind in your face (which was fucking sweet in the summer), the Harley Davidson game which had some crazy lean going on, that kind of stuff. The kind of shit you can only get in the arcades.

Our last arcade closed in '96 though (when I was 5) so I've missed a lot. MAME (and building a cabinet) helped me catch up some.

Game controls with a joystick with several triggers on it as well as with a trackball that has a "special" button near it. The premise is a futuristic game show. You pick your contestant, each one with different stats and special abilities. For example, one character can turn invisible. Another can steal your weapon. Another does a turbo run that stuns anyone that he comes in contact with when he's doing it. Rounds are timed, and most kills win. The game keeps track of kills, rounds won, and the amount of "prizes" your contestant has accumulated. Playtime is also calculated. All these (aside from high score bragging rights) were used to factor in when hidden characters were available to you. Your data was saved via a 5 digit code you'd put in through a numpad. After you put in your info, at the character select screen, putting in the right numerical code gave you access to hidden characters, such as the 3 Grid Cheerleaders, the host, Cameraman, and Sub Zero & Scorpion. Fantastic game. I had hour of fun playing it at my old arcade where me, my best bud, and a guy we knew through the arcade were always battling for the top spots on the leaderboard.

It's a bitch to get an actual cabinet, though, as you have to buy 3 in 1 units, and they can run quite pricey. There are single units available, but where's the fun in that? The fun with The Grid was competing against others, not the computer. There was supposed to be a DC port with online functionality, but it never came out as the Dreamcast was put out to pasture before it was complete.

If you ever see this machine sitting in an arcade, do yourselves the favor and give it a go. You won't regret it.
