Can't pick just one, but my top 3 probably are Sin and Punishment, Alien Soldier and Mischief Makers.

Most of their games, especially their /vr/ games, are all pure gems, even the McD game, and the Yuu Yuu Hakusho game is incredible, the multiplayer is insane.

Also, the original N64 version of Bangai-O is also worth playing even if you played the DC one. I find the controls better on the N64 and it's more challenging due to the combo-based system.

I usually play using the d-pad to move and the c-buttons to shoot in all directions, but I'm also trying to get good using the left-side control scheme (move with d-pad, and shoot/aim with the 3D stick, and use Z to blast off the missiles).
Shooting with the 3D stick gives it a very arcadey feel and although the c-buttons work well as a sort of d-pad, it's a lot quicker to aim and shoot with the stick, however it's also harder, mainly because I'm not used to holding the control on the left side, even though I'm left handed.
Anyone experimented playing it this way?
I'm also trying to master S&P using the left-side scheme.

We're too fucking old for console wars, the only ones pushing console wars in here are kids from /v/ who occasionally drop by to shitpost.

It's okay if you personally didn't like S&P or Mischief Makers. To each their own, I guess.

Calling S&P the "most overrated shit on the planet" is just ridiculous though, come on.

I'll give you it might get a little bit of extra attention because it was a Japan-only title for a while and people tend to hype up good games that were forbidden to us filthy gaijin pigs (Rondo of Blood, etc), but S&P is a really good game if you like cabal shooters.

>>2213570
While yes, Vic Ireland brought over a lot of games, he also fucked with them. The very idea that he thought he could improve the gameplay in a Treasure title should tell you a lot about his crazy hubris, but let's look at Silhouette Mirage.

The world is filled with light and dark type beings, silhouettes and mirages. Your character is half one and half the other and you flip back and forth as you wish. If you attack an enemy of the same type as you currently are, you drain it's power which you can use for special attacks. Attack them with the opposite and you do damage. Also you can pick them up and hit them to knock coins out that you use to buy new weapons and shit.

The Japanese version of the game is a lot of fun and a fast paced run and gun type game. You run though the levels, draining, bashing and killing enemies, pretty much at your whim. Drain this guy, zap the next and keep going.

Vic Ireland though thought that all seemed too easy (even though the Jap version gets pretty nasty at times, especially the bosses). So what he did was make enemies take more damage to kill, use your special power up more quickly and vastly increase the cost of new weapons and upgrades. Which doesn't sound terrible on paper, but the result was that you pretty much have to attack every enemy three times. You have to drain their energy so you have enough to be able to do decent attacks, then you pretty much have to cash bash each one if you want to have enough money later on. And finally you get to kill them and can choose to weak attack over and over till it finally dies or use some special energy to kill it quickly which you'll just have to re-charge on the next one.

It completely ruined the pace of the game and turned it from this Gunstar Heroes style fast paced action game to a dull slog.

Me and my buddy played through Guardian Heroes dozens and dozens of times, and wasted many afternoons in the arena. It's easily one of my favorite games of all time. And yet, it's not even my favorite Treasure game.

Light-gun shooters are the ones where you can't dodge and must shoot all targets until the timer runs out, like House of the Dead. There may be gimmicks like in Time Crisis, where you have a "hide" pedal, but that's just temporary invincibility switch and not actual controlled movement.

S&P is a rail shooter. The major difference is that they require you to actively move on the screen to dodge. They are never played with actual light guns for obvious reasons. Other examples are Star Fox and Panzer Dragoon games. Most rail shooters allow the played to move on a 2D plane which scrolls in 3d, but there is a very interesting PS1 game called Omega Boost that allows you to move in a 3D sphere which itself autoscrolls in 3D. Panzer Dragoon is special in that it allows 360 look (even though you're limited to an autoscrolling 2d plane), and Star Fox allows you to control the speed of the auto scroll, which is also a rare mechanic.

A game that is often called a rail-shooter but is actually a light-gun shooter is REZ. There is an on-screen avatar, but it is not controlled by the player in order to dodge bullets or obstacles; gameplay consists only of shooting enemies preventively.

I'm pretty sure I read that Treasure said it sold better than they expected. It's also getting re-released as a downloadable title for Wii U in Japan.

It's a new game, follows the Spirits format of just having a bunch of levels with certain challenges to choose from. Pretty fun.

>does anyone have any inside info on characters like Golden Silver or picrelated appearing on multiple games?

What do you mean by inside info? Golden Silver appears in both Gunstar Heroes games and Guardian Heroes, the Stone-like is in Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga. For other instances, Melon Bread or some variation of the design appears in multiple games: Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier, Sin and Punishment, maybe more.

It's the never ending Treasure Multi-verse. Most of the games take place in a series of inter connected universes.

If you read into the messy manuals, and vague in game content, it becomes more and more clear.

Gunstar Heroes started the trend, with taking place on G9, Gunstar Super Heroes very clearly draws out the whole multi-verse theory, and slowly all the games come together.

Mischief Makers, Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga are all tied together through the Stonelike.

Sin and Punishment 2 takes place across both Earth 4 and Earth 5, which are separate planets in different multi-verses. It also explains why Earth 5 in the game is full of Keepers, rather than Ruffians. As the first game takes place on a totally different Earth.

There are hints in Gunstar Super Heroes European version that their Earth may in fact be a Mimicry, possibly trying it to Sin and Punishments eventuality.

I honestly however think this is more of a common thematic of their games, than an actual thought out universe. The developers clearly have a set hand full of themes they like remixing and addressing.

>> No.2217567

>>2217553
Oh yea, Alien Soldier deal with the multi-verse as well, I can't find my Manual scans, so I am not actually sure if I remember this correctly, But Epsilon is not from the universe that the game takes place in. And I think the manual also talks about the inner and outer space conflicts that both S&P2, and GSH also bring up.

Everyone in the game however is human to begin with, and they all were given transformations through experiments. The transformation theme is similar in that sense to both Sin and Punishment games.

I honestly don't remember how BangaiO tied into it all. I don't actually think it did.

I can say Treasure's shmups are really good, their graphics, music and difficulty are good and Radiant is the most story driven shmup I can remember, that's worth of mentioning right?

The most important thing is not to be an elitist while knowing how to recognize the quality, definitely popular =/= bad.

Treasure is a freelance sort of company, most of its members work for other companies in the meantime. I'm sure Treasure's president said that in one interview.
I don't see it impossible for them to work on a spiritual sequel to RS/Ikaruga. I personally would want a whole new IP to expand on their crazy and nonsensical multiverse, or Mischief Makers 2

It's unfortunate the game for 3DS didn't do good. It was actually a new IP created by Capcom, I think the anime and the game got released simultaneously, or at least they were announced at the same time as the same multimedia project.
I've seen videos of the gameplay and it looks like a cool action game. The feel of the game sort of remind me of Megaman Legends...
Probably Capcom fucked up advertising this, or this really isn't catering to the new generation of japs demographics because I think that shit would have sold in the 90s.
