It's pretty great. Sort of like a prototype splinter cell.

I've never played the series before, but once I got used to the tank controls, I started really having fun with the game. There are a few issues with draw distance and enemies being able to detect you, but overall I'm having an absolute blast.

Soundtrack is excellent, I was not expecting something this high quality at all. It's a shame that the voice acting is so hokey, because the production values of this game are fairly impressive for the 32-bit era.

One of my All-Time PSX favourites.

It actually started the modern stealth genre, together with Thief and Metal Gear Solid.

The Soundtrack is absolute god-tier :

Tenchu is a really enjoyable game, I was really surprised at how well-made it was for a 3D game. I also liked the voice acting a lot, the engrish added to the atmosphere, it's not the kind of game to take really seriously plot-iwse.
The soundtrack was made by Noriyuki Asakura, a really awesome composer. You should also check out another franchise made by Acquire : Way of the Samurai, with pretty much the same staff and the same composer.

There are several versions of Tenchu, assuming you have played US/EU version, you had two additionnal levels over the japanese version. There are also two other versions released only in japan, one with the two levels and a level editor and another that has 100 levels made by user and picked by Tenchu staff.

Also, the soundtrack released is good but doesn't have the incredible music of the new levels. Check : "Training", "Cross the Checkpoint" and "Execute the corrupt minister".

Ayane is pretty much a total bitch in this game. It makes me curious how she sounds and talks in moonspeak.

yep im with you OP, its absaloutely brilliant - full of surprises, interesting setting and gameplay, well paced..

i remember wrath of heaven on PS2 being amazing too, the 2Player vs and co-op was awesome. in a lot of ways tenchu is ahead of its time.. its a shame the IP kind of sucks now. they don't really try to add much new to the new tenchus and it hasn't really impressed since wrath of heaven

The last boss is extremely cheap, and goes down in a predictably cheesy cutscene. The whole last level is a disappointment, being much more linear and filled with frustrating guard positions.

And that's it.

Despite a rough start with the controls, the game ended up really grabbing me. The intricate, nonlinear nature of the levels, the well thought out stealth mechanics and the cool ninja style punched way above its weight. Methodically sneaking my way through the levels, taking out enemy guards and finding all the little touches that the developers put in was addictive, with the gadgets and mobility giving tons of options without making things too easy for the player.

The boss fights are mostly terrible, and the games visual flourishes can sometimes be hidden by the appalling draw distance, but despite the technical limitations I couldn't put this game down. It's astonishing that despite being one of the first 3D stealth games, it managed to do so many things right. I had a wonderful time with Tenchu, and I'm very pleased that I decided to give the series a chance.

excellent game and one of the few that got me into making my own... cannot recommend it highly enough

as OP went on to say though the bosses were a weak point and MGS actually did them a great deal better while tenchu is far better at stealth (we can all agree the voice acting is enjoyably cheesy)

That's a nice little summary of why Tenchu is still cool to play.

i dont think it was underrated during the ps1 era

then from sold the rights after wrath of heaven for ps2 and the quality felt underwhelming specially compared to other stealth games of the era (thief, hitman, splinter cell, mgs)

Tenchu 3 was made after the change of developer too. I think the K2 Tenchu, at least 3 and Fatal Shadows, are even better than the Acquire ones.
I never understood how someone can love Tenchu 1&2 while disliking the Ps2 ones. Tenchu 3 it's basically an improved remake of 1.

I like playing my games with the graphics as raw as possible. I'm not really thrilled about all the fancy filters and stuff.

Maybe it would look a bit different with some CRT effects, or crisper on some other emulator, but I'd rather play it like this.

Increasing the 3D resolution isn't what I'd call a fancy filter.
