Hey guys, which rpg should I play next for ps1? I have xenogears, chrono cross, ff viii and ff ix, and parasite eve 1 and 2. These are all rpg's I've never played before. Want a bit of a challenge and also a great story / atmosphere. Which one would you guys recommend of these? I usually only play a couple jrpg's a year since they take so long to beat.

This isn't 100% true. Some think that the worst part of Cross was the Trigger tie-ins. Be aware that they're completely different games in a lot of ways; if you view Cross like that, you won't be unprepared for what happens.

No emulator, have a physical collection of games. Will be playing on a ps2 with ps1 controller on my retro tv set up. It's hooked up via component cable so decent quality. Is an emulator worth it if I have physical games? I've emulated some gamecube games via dolphin and also snes but I always enjoy physical games more.

Because Trigger is dated, boring and simplistic to the point of boring a normal person to death long before even finishing the cliche monsters-in-church event. Logically expecting game 2 to be the same trite with a new paintjob as is the custom in gaming, they'd end up missing out one of the best RPGs in history.

Playing Trigger second will have players force themselves through it for the sake of getting more backstory for Cross and/or watching it play out with the knowledge of the true repercussions of the character's actions.

that honestly made me lol, because I know CT fans can be a bit fundamentalist.

that said, it is an extremely wrong post. obviously it's dated because it's old, but it still holds up fairly well. it has a decent story and the menu based battle system was a step forward in creativity. it's streamlined, not simplistic. there's also a notable lack of grinding. if you give up before even beating yakra, you must have an extremely short attention span, meaning that FPS is probably a better genre for you than RPG.

chrono cross is far from one the best RPGs. it's got alot of good ideas going on, but its execution is flawed and the plot is muddled.

I'm not saying chrono trigger is jesus in the form of a video game, but it's an overall excellent piece of work, and a great way of getting into RPGs.
